Chapter 10: She Is Driving Me Crazy
Chapter ten: She Is Driving Me Crazy
Bernard
The sun was setting and another day was coming to an end without any answers in regard to Elena. This girl was driving me over the fucking edge. She managed to infiltrate every area of my mind. I couldn't think or even breathe without her face filling my thoughts.
Her scent still lingered in my nose and I was tempted to go to the hospital to see how she was fairing. She had been hysterical when I spoke to her the last time and judging from her reactions, I knew I was right. She was running from something or rather, someone and I intended to get to the bottom of everything.
First thing, I need to call Alpha Ronald, his boundaries which he had claimed were impenetrable had been breached yet again by wolves I was sure did not belong to his Pack. They had been lurking in the shadows as they waited for something or someone. Their eyes had been glued on my boundaries and I knew then that they wanted Elena. I had no idea what they wanted from her but what I did know was that I needed to protect her at all costs. She is my mate after all and even though I could not have her in the way my wolf wanted, I am still going to keep her safe.
I scrolled through my phone and came across the number I was looking for. I tapped the screen and moved to my window to catch the outside view. Alpha Ronald picked up the call just on the second ring.
"Bernard, to what do I owe the pleasure?" Ronald's deep voice filled my ear.
"Alpha Ronald, I hope you are fine," I said to him.
"I am well, my boy. How is my future son-in-law doing?" He laughed that deep kind of laugh that started right at the pit of your stomach. I hated when he called me his son-in-law, it was off-putting coming from his lips. I am not his boy, he often treated me as a child when I was as much an Alpha as he is. I didn't like the fact that he belittled me and invalidated my ranking.
"I am alright, I actually called because I was out on a run last night and came across four wolves within your boundaries. From my observation, I realized that they were not wolves from your Pack. I knew how effective your patrol was so I was just wondering as to how your wolves could have missed them." I said to him.
"You are speaking nonsense, Bernard. My patrollers are some of the most efficient wolves in this part of our world. They wouldn't make such a mistake. " I responded and I rolled my eyes. Although his Pack is impressive and pale in comparison with mine, he was just a pompous man who had won one battle back in the day and never stopped telling the story about it.
"Unfortunately, it seems they have. I have to relay what I said before the situation got out of hand. You know the problems rogues can bring into a territory especially if they travel in groups." I muttered to him and I heard some shuffling on the other end of the call and waited until he was done with what he was doing.
"Have you told anyone else about this information, Bernard?" He asked in a hushed voice.
"No, I haven't. I thought it was best to come to you first." I replied.
"You did the right thing, my boy. Let us just keep this between us and I will get back to you once I get to the bottom of this." He said.
There it was again, that stupid nickname. Not even my own father addresses me with that 'my boy.' This man always made it a point to remind me that he was an Alpha long before I had been born. If he weren't my future father-in-law, I would have had a few choice words for him.
"No problem, Ronald." I was about to hang up but he stopped me.
"Bernard, Helen will be arriving at your Pack in the next three days. I think you should use the opportunity to get acquainted with one another before the marriage ritual." He added, his words were like a bucket of ice-cold water right over my body.
"Yes of course," I replied, feigning happiness.
"Your daughter will be taken care of, Ronald. I can assure you." I added.
"My daughter had many suitors but your father convinced me that you would be the best pick for her. We have groomed and trained her to perfection and she will make a fitting bride and Luna." He said.
He spoke of his daughter like he had bred a winning racehorse. If he was like this, I could only imagine what Helen his daughter would be like. Would she take after her father or would she break away from the tree and be something totally different?
"Of course, I will treat her with the utmost respect, Ronald. Your daughter is safe in my hands." I said to him.
"She had to be. Goodbye, Bernard."
"Goodbye, Ronald." I ended the call and tossed my phone onto my desk.
I had five months to come to terms with my arranged marriage. I had to come to terms with marrying Helen Elison. I knew my obligations and I was ready to fulfill them but then Elena happened and she messed everything up.
Why did the moon goddess do this to me? I accepted that I was to be one of the mateless wolves that roamed this earth. Then, she decided to send her to me just as I was set to marry another woman. It was cruel and twisted. I heard a knock at the door but I was in no mood to deal with anyone today.
"Go away!" I yelled, already walking over to my bar cart. The door opened and I was about to rip the head off the person that dared to defy my orders until I was who it was.
"Is that the proper way to speak to your mother, Bernard?" My mother scolded me.
She was in her usual attire, a form-fitting work dress, and heels that barely left the floor. She dressed like she was a part of the British royal family and I often told her she could wear casual clothing but she always insisted on wearing that. As an acting Luna, she had to present herself well.
"Hi, mother." I walked over to where she stood and placed a kiss on her cheeks. She smiled at me and walked into my office. She sat on one of the leather sofas that I had in the center of the room. She looked at the empty glass in my hand and curled an eyebrow.
"Drinking on a Monday morning, Bernard? This is quite rare for you. What is the reason behind this behaviour if I may ask?" She said to me and I shrugged.
"Can't a man just have a drink, mother? It has been hectic for some days, I am just trying to ease some stress." I replied to her.
"So you aren't about to turn into a raging alcoholic like your uncle?" She asked, I rolled my eyes at her.
"No, mother. I won't turn out like Uncle Darren. I am fine, I just had a lot on my mind recently." I muttered to her.
I went over to the bar cart and dropped the glass. After last night, it was best to avoid dark liquor for a few days. I didn't want to get used to nursing my emotions with alcohol.
