Chapter 139: Akeesh
Chapter 139: Akeesh
Bernard
I stared at my mate who lay unconscious in the hospital bed. She looked so peaceful, a part of me wanted her to stay in whatever dreamland she had escaped to. I held onto her hand, hoping that the mate bond was doing what it could to calm her because the moon goddess knew that I needed some calm right now.
When I woke up today, never in a million years would I have thought that Helen Elison would come knocking and tell me that she is pregnant with my child. My head was still spinning. None of this makes sense, I had never slept with her, at least as far as I could remember. The only time anything cloud has possibly happened was when I had been drugged by my mother and her. I woke up and found her naked in my bed.
I had no recollection of what happened that night but I had been sure that I hadn't even touched her. My heart belongs to Elena and her alone.
"Damn it!" I whispered, the door opened and Liam walked in, he had a somber look on his face.
"How is she doing? Any sign of waking up?"
He walked next to the bed, placed his stethoscope onto her chest, and listened to her heartbeat.
"Not even a twitch, I don't know if it is because her wolf retreated into her subconscious or if something might actually be wrong with her."
"Well, we ran the test and her blood was clean and so did her scans. I think the news of Helen and the pregnancy really shocked her. I think she fainted because she was about to go into panic mode and her brain was trying to protect her."
I brushed my free hand against her face, she had been out for almost three hours but I missed her eyes. I wanted to see those sapphire gems again.
"There is no way she can be pregnant, I don't even remember sleeping with the girl." I looked at Liam.
"Did you get her blood checked again?"
"We did," from his voice, I already knew that the results were not going to be in my favor.
"She is pregnant, she is about five months along. Bernard, you know you can tell me anything. Did you have sex with Helen?"
"No," my reply was instant.
"I….I don't think I did."
"What do you mean by that?" I signed.
"There was a time when I was still healing from the attack when I saved Elena. I was deep asleep and I remembered Elena coming in but when I woke up, it was Helen next to me. She was naked and I was in my boxers, she said we had done something but I didn't believe her at that time."
"So, you are saying that she drugged you?" I nodded.
"She had my mother's help."
I looked at my sleeping mate, this was so messed up. Our wedding is in a few days, the Pack had been so joyful and jubilant over the fact that their Alpha and Luna were finally going to tie the knot, and now this? Would we postpone the wedding? Would we get married anyway despite all of this?
I had no idea what Ronald wanted out of me but I knew what I wanted, I wanted my mate, my one true mate to be at my side. If at all, the pregnancy is mine, I would take care of the child. It would be my blood. But the child will not be allowed to claim the Alpha title, seeing as it was not born by my legitimate mate bond. I would make sure it was taken care of, I am not a monster. I would own up to my part in everything even if I wasn't a willing participant.
"I have put her through much already." My voice cracked at the end. The weight of the situation was cracking the resolve I had been trying to hold together for Elena's sake.
"I can't lose her, Liam. She is my whole being, without her, I am nothing."
"You won't lose her, Bernard."
"And how can you be so sure? Elena woke up and decided that she had had enough. Any woman would have grown tired of these constant barriers and obstacles, she would have left."
"But she is not any woman, she is your woman. This is Elena we are talking about here, the same woman who took on Richard on her own to save you. The woman who stood up to Nicholas even when she didn't have your Alpha protection. The same woman who was willing to break her own heart just to see you happy."
This is exactly why I didn't deserve her, it seemed like I just brought more and more problems to her life, and there was never peace. We were allowed two seconds of joy and happiness and then we would be plunged into misery and heartbreak once more.
"Where is Ronald?"
"I left him with Helen on the maternity floor, they are going to get an ultrasound to check on the child's health. They had requested your presence." I nodded.
"Can you stay with her while I go and speak with them?"
"Of course."
I bent down and placed a gentle kiss on her cold lips. Her chest rose and fell evenly, I pressed my forehead against hers and closed my eyes. I breathed in her sweet addictive scent.
"Wait for me, my love." I knew she probably couldn't hear me but I just felt like saying that.
"Let me know if she wakes up." Liam nodded and I left the room.
I headed towards the maternity floor with one thing in mind. I am going to let out every frustration on Ronald, I know I had promised Elena no violence but if he swung first, then my hand would have been forced. I balled my fists as I waited for the elevator to open. I reached the examination room, knocked, and waited.
"Come in." Helen's muffled voice said from the other side.
I entered the room, she was dressed in a hospital gown and her father stood beside her. He looked at me with so much hatred and I was sure my eyes mirrored his.
"Finally, you decide to actually take some responsibility and be there for your unborn child."
"And how sure are you that the baby she carries is mine?" He growled.
"You dare to taint my daughter's name further? She was a virgin when I brought her to you and you sent her back plucked. I am sure you were hard on her."
"Father!" She gasped at her father's crudeness.
"Unless you are talking about the time she drugged me. I don't remember sleeping with her."
"So, she just happened to become pregnant then?" I shrugged.
"Maybe she slept with another man because it certainly wasn't me."
"Come on, Bernard. I am as thrilled as you are at the fact that you are the father of my child. If I am being honest, I would have rather had a janitor as the father than you." I snorted.
"Don't make me laugh, Helen. We both know just like your father, you have a thirst for power, unlike a janitor who can give you nothing. You would benefit greatly from carrying my child."
She bit down on her tongue, she couldn't say anything because we both knew it was true. I snapped my gaze to her father.
"If you think that I shall take Helen as my Luna if at all the child is mine then you are sorely mistaken. I will take care of the child but Helen will have no title of any kind in my Pack."
"So, you would leave my daughter unmated and with your child?" He looked like was about to bite my head off. Good, I was itching for a fight.
"I would take care of the child, it would be my blood but the child would hold no claim to the Alpha title but they would be highly ranked and given the warrior status."
"You must be joking." She laughed without humor.
"I am carrying your child, you would have to mate me." I shook my head.
"I have already marked Elena and she has marked me too. Our bond is solidified."
"But if it is not cemented, a mark can be removed, Bernard. As long as you have not mated with her, then technically you are still unmated. Therefore, by the law, you have to marry Helen or I will call for an Akeesh."
This man was just begging to be hit. An Akeesh was a battle between two wolves, the winner got to choose what he wanted from his opponent. I am not scared of losing to him, what I didn't want was for my entire Pack knowing of these issues before it was all clarified.
"Call the Akeesh, you know that I will defeat you and I would take great pleasure meeting you until you are black and blue. But I promised my mate that there would be no more violence from me, so we wait." They both looked at each other and then at me confused.
"For what exactly, Bernard?" She crossed her arms over her chest.
"The paternity test, only then will we know whether or not the pregnancy belonged to me or another man."
Ronald looked completely at ease, unfazed and unbothered. Helen on the other hand faltered for a millisecond. To someone without careful eyes, she would have seen me at ease and calm but I had careful eyes. I would not call her out on it now, I will wait for the test results to come out. That would be the definitive answer that would give me the power to put both of them in their place.
'Elena is awake.' Liam's voice echoed in my mind.
'Coming.'
"Goodbye to the both of you, we will see each other when the results come out tomorrow. I will have my warriors escort you to your sleeping quarter after you are done with your scan and test."
I didn't wait for them to reply, I dashed out of the room.
