Chapter 60: I Will Always Choose Her

Chapter sixty: I Will Always Choose Her

Bernard

"The good news is that you haven't lost her, brother. When I went to see her this morning, she looked broken and hurt, that means the love she has for you is still intact. I am sure that once you explain everything to her, all will be okay. You need to give it a little bit of time." He assured me.

"I will speak to Elena but first I need to handle my mother. She nearly cost me one of the greatest gifts this world gave me just because of a woman who paled in comparison to the one that fate had destined for me. How could she have done this to me? I trusted her and this is how she repaid me, she stabbed a knife right through my heart." I stood up, my wolf needed to be let out. I needed a run, I took a step towards the back door but Liam blocked my path.

"Easy there, buddy." He placed his hand on my shoulder.

"Your eyes are glowing and you are on the verge of shifting. Do I need to remind you that if you transform, you will over exert your wolf? He is not strong enough yet." He tried to calm me down.

"Let me go, Liam." I growled.

"Not until you calm down, you can't speak to your mother like this, you will hurt her. Your anger is fueling everything and that is the wrong way to deal with all of this."

"Then, what is the right way! Tell me, Liam! I almost lost Elena!" I yelled.

"But you didn't." He shook my shoulder as if to shake sense into me.

"She is with you so calm down. She is yours and nothing can change that but you can't speak to your mother like this. You will regret whatever the outcome would be."

He is right, if I wanted the answers that I needed, I couldn't get them from my mother with red hot anger. I needed to be calm and level headed.

A silence descended upon the room as the wheels clanked loudly in my head. I breathed in and out slowly, trying to calm the rage within me. I needed to speak to my mother and get to the root of all this. I turned my head to face Liam.

"Get my mother here?" He looked at me wearily.

"Bern, I don't think it is a good idea to speak to her when you are like this." I shook my head.

"I am fine, Liam. I am more calm now than I was before. I need to speak to her now before going to see Elena." He didn't look convinced but didn't fight me on it. He nodded his head and left. I stayed in the kitchen for a few more minutes.

All of this had been nothing but a little ploy in hopes of separating me from Elena. It has only been two days but it felt like hell. My heart felt like it was on life support and was about to give up. I was never a man who was affected by situations or people, I could never afford to be. I am an Alpha after all but this one blue-eyed, fire-haired goddess had reduced me to my knees.

I walked to my office and waited for my mother to arrive. I thought over everything I was going to say, she betrayed me. She had fooled me into thinking that Elena was someone who she was not. She is willing to sacrifice my happiness for what? I heard the front door open and the click of her heels on the hardwood floors.

'In my office, mother.' I said through the mind-link.

I heard the sound of her heels making their way towards my office. I sat up straight on the couch and watched the door. She didn't know, she just waltzed in like she owned the place.

"It is good to see you up and moving, my baby." She smiled at me but when she noticed that I was quiet, her smile slipped from her face.

"What is going on?" She eyed me wearily.

"Has something happened?" She asked.

"Please have a seat, mother." I gestured to the couch opposite mine.

She sat down and stared at me, we were separated by an oak coffee table which was a good thing because I didn't need to be close to her. I could already feel my wolf stirring within me, I had been calm but seeing her in front of me stirred up more anger.

"Bernard?" She stared at me with big innocent wide eyes, I couldn't believe that I had fallen for her tricks.

"Why did you lie to me, mother?" My words came out low and angry.

She looked taken aback but quickly corrected her features. She was never one to break her role as the calm and collected Luna.

"What do you mean, Bernard?" She asked.

I placed my elbow on my knees and leaned forward. I stared down at her with an intensity I only reserved for those who opposed me.

"Who told you about Jack and Elena?" She blinked.

"I heard it from one of the women who saw them going towards the Pack center" She replied.

"Last I remember, you told me that you were the one who saw them heading towards the lake. Now they were going to the Pack center? Which one is it, mother?" She let out a soft laugh.

"I must have gotten so confused, you know this brain of mine. It doesn't work quite well as it used to." I remained silent.

She is lying to me again, she didn't even bat an eyelash. The lies just spilled from her mouth so easily. I stood up and made my way to my desk. I started talking as I walked slowly to my desk.

"When I first got the position of the Alpha, I remembered you told me what kind of leader I needed to be. You told me that I needed to lead with humility, firmness, and honesty. You also said that you would be with me every single step of the way, guiding me, helping me, and counseling me."

"I remembered, I said that you would need to place duty over everything." She uttered.

I got to my chair and stood behind it, I looked at my mother. She was sitting elegantly on the couch, not a single hair out of place. Her posture was straight and her head was held high. A true Luna in the eyes of all those who saw her.

"Yes, duty." I laughed humorlessly.

"I hated that word, you know. My duty is to be the best Alpha for my Pack and to continue to lead them from strength to strength."

"That is correct." She muttered.

"I can only be a good Alpha if I am at peace and happy."

"Correct." She said.

"So why then would you want to take away the one thing that brings me peace and happiness, mother?" She was silent.

A heavy weight descended upon the room as I waited for her to respond and then she cleared her throat.

"I don't know what you are talking about, Bernard. I am your mother, I would never do anything of the sort. I always want you to be happy." She said.

"So, why did you lie to me about Elena?" She was shocked.

"I did no such thing, the girl is happy with this Jack boy. Why should it concern you, Bernard? You cannot pine after a woman when you already have a mate that you are set to marry." She responded.

"She is not my mate! Helen is not my mate, or mother, and stop referring as one." She stood up from her seat, her face took on a red tint. Why was she even angry? I was the one who had the right to be upset with her.

"Yes, she is. You took an oath, you gave your word, Bernard. An Alpha never goes back on his word or have you forgotten your father's teachings?"

"I also made a promise to my mate, my one true mate that I will choose her through every season and every day." I expected her to look a little shocked at the revelation of finding out that I had a mate but she didn't even bat an eyelash.

"You knew, didn't you? Father told you about Elena, didn't he?" She was silent and the question answered itself.

"And you still tried to tear us apart, why?" She was silent again. Her eyes were locked on me and all traces of emotions were wiped off her face.

"Answer me!" I roared.

She flinched, her head hung low as the weight of my Alpha command weighed down on her. Only a very few people could resist the effects of an Alpha command and those who managed to resist were either the mate of the Alpha or an Alpha. That was why she was able to lift her head after she overpowered the effects of the command.

"Don't speak to me like I am one of your peers, Bernard.

I rounded my desk and moved to the close distance between us. I kept a few meters between us to help keep my cool. My wolf was clawing at the surface and I was struggling to hold him back.

"Elena came here two days ago and you chased her away. You told her I was with Helen when you knew I wasn't. You of all people should know what it means to have a fated mate, so why would you ever put me in a position to lose her?"

"She is not right for you, Bernard. She had no title, and came with no land or power. Helen is the strategic pick and you already swore that you would marry her. You can't back out now simply because of that girl." I growled.

"That girl is to be your future Luna, you will show her the respect she deserves."

"Over my dead body will that woman be by your side. Helen is suitable to be your bride, not some rogue."

"Mother! I won't tell you again, you will respect Elena." She took a few steps forward.

"Love can be found anywhere, Bernard. You will learn to love Helen but power is one thing that is not easily obtained. You made a promise to Helen."

"To hell with that promise! My promise to my mate is far more important." She scoffed.

"And what about Ronald? What will you do about the treaty you signed?"

"I will handle it." She crossed her arms over her chest.

"You can not be with that woman, I forbid it."

"Good thing, you are not the Alpha, I am. You can not command me to do anything, mother. Now leave!" She stood gasping at me.

"Did I stutter, mother? I said leave!" She looked like she wanted to say something but quickly shut her mouth. She turned and made her way to the door.

"And, mother?" She looked over her shoulder at me.

"Don't ever put me in a position where I have to choose between you and Elena." She stared at me, waiting for me to finish my sentence.

"Because it won't be you that I will choose." I saw the slight hurt pass across her eyes but she quickly hid it. She opened the door and walked out of my office.

I leaned against my desk and breathed a heavy sigh. The hardest part was done now I knew what I needed to do next.

'Liam," I called him through the mind link.

'Please find Elena and bring her to me.' I added.
