Chapter 57: Till Death Do Us Apart

Chapter fifty-seven: Till Death Do Us Apart

Liam

I drove to the park lobby and saw my wife's car and then I knew she was at home. She will help me make sense of everything that is going on in my head. I have tried to make sense of all the information I gather from both of them but I couldn't. I got up and headed inside my house. Ever since I found Jane in high school, life just seemed easier to handle. She had been there for me when I was battling whether or not I should continue my Beta training or train to be a doctor, she supported me through every endeavor and had been my greatest cheerleader. If anyone could help me with this dilemma, it is only her.

"Darling?" I called.

"I am here." Her voice was coming from the living room.

I went into the room and saw her sitting on the couch with a coffee mug in one hand and a book in the other hand. She had her brunette hair in a messy bun and her face was free of any makeup. She was wearing my gray sweats and a large hoodie over her tiny frame. She always seemed very beautiful in this way, although I appreciated her when she had makeup and styled her hair but I preferred her this natural. Her natural beauty shined in this way. I always complimented her and she never failed to blush. I love that even after all these years, I still managed to give my mate butterflies.

"I walked up behind the couch and leaned down to place a chaste kiss on her lips in greeting, she tasted like vanilla and coffee beans. I went in for another kiss and allowed my lips to linger a little longer. I broke the kiss to whisper into her ears.

"You are breathtaking, my love." She beamed at me.

"You say that every day. Even if I wear a plastic bag with nasty stuff all over my body, you would still call me the hottest thing you have laid your eyes on." I chuckled, pulling away to stand to my full straight.

"Well, that is because you will never cease to be beautiful in my eyes, my love. I love you."

"I love you too." She responded.

I rounded the couch and came to sit beside her. I grabbed the mug out of her hand and placed it on the table. I took her free hand and threaded my fingers through hers. I moved the back of her hand to my lips and placed a gentle kiss on it. I hummed in contentment as the storm that had been raging inside me calmed a little. This is the effect this woman had on me, she made everything easier to beat.

"Are you okay, Liam?" I shook my head.

"My head is all messed up, Jane. I don't know what to do." She closed her book and turned, facing me.

"Talk to me, what is the problem?" I sighed.

"Bernard found his mate." Her face split into a huge smile.

"That is great but why is that a bad thing?"

"Because of Helen. You know how Joseph and Elizabeth arranged a marriage for Bernard and they got him to make the Alpha promise which means he is bound to this union not only contractually but also supernaturally. You know what an Alpha promise means and if it is broken, not only will his integrity be questioned but some of our allies will end their relationship with us." I explained.

"That is terrible." She squeezed my hand.

"But there is more to the story, isn't it?" I nodded.

"His mate is the rogue they brought in a few weeks ago. Her name is Elena, she hasn't told me but I feel that she has experienced more pain and trauma than one person could be able to bear. She keeps her cards so close to her chest and makes it impossible to get to know her but she somehow opened up to me about her true feelings for Bernard and how she felt about the mate bone."

"So, doesn't Bernard want her?" She asked and I shook my head.

"He wants her, in fact, I think he has fallen deeply in love with her. The problem isn't that they don't want each other, the problem is that they want to be with each other." She looked at me confused.

"Let me explain, my love." I rubbed my thumb along the back of her hand.

"Elizabeth, Bernard's mother, lied to both of them in order to make them angry with one another. She planned it so well that neither of them wants to speak to each other no matter how badly they actually wanted to." I explained.

"What lie did she tell them?" She asked and told her everything. I even told her about my theory of how I believe it all happened and her face morphed from neutral to horrified.

"How could Elizabeth do such a thing? She of all people knows what it was like to be with one fated mate. Why would she take away that opportunity for her son?" I shrugged.

"I don't know, that is what I have been battling with. Elizabeth loves her son, she would set herself on fire before she would think of hurting Bernard. So, I don't understand how she could possibly do something like this, it is not right." She squeezed my hand.

"So, what are you planning to do, my love?" I leaned my head back to look at the roof.

"That is what I am trying to figure out. I wanted to talk to Bernard but I think I should confront Elizabeth first. I need to know why she would do such a thing to Bernard." I told her.

"No, that wasn't the response I expected. You shouldn't talk to Elizabeth, she is his mother and you are simply Bernard's best friend. You have no real leg to stand in all of this, let Bernard handle his mother. He knows her best." I turned to look at my mate.

"But I feel like she is just manipulating him. Elizabeth is a wizard with words, she will twist his brain into thinking that she did it out of love rather than spite."

"And that is not your problem, you cannot involve yourself in family issues that aren't your family. Bernard and Elizabeth will sort out their own problem, your job is simply to inform Bernard of what has transpired then from there, you need to allow him to handle his mother." I sighed.

"You are right but I don't know if I should speak to him now or wait till tomorrow."

"You did say that you already talked to him earlier this morning, right?" I nodded.

"Then I think it is best to speak to him about it today. Just give him an hour or two to cool off and then go back and speak with him again. Make sure you tell him everything, don't leave anything out, and just be completely transparent with him. He will be angry but not with you, he will be angry with his mother with good reason, and then you have done your duty as his best friend, got it?" I nodded.

This woman always knew exactly what to say to get my head back on track. This is why we needed fated mates, they understood exactly what we needed even before we said it out loud. Jane is my perfect puzzle piece, we complimented each other well and moved like a well-oiled machine.

"What would I do without you?" I cupped her face with my free hand. She turned her face and kissed the corner of my palm. The gesture sent a warm tingle flooding throughout my body. She never ceased to excite me.

"Probably starve and maybe live in darkness because you forget to pay the bills." She joked.

"Very funny but I am good at some things like changing a light bulb and fixing the plumbing." I joked back.

"But can you feed yourself something other than eggs and coffee?" She teased me.

I went silent and she threw her head back and let out a boisterous laugh. Her laugh was like a sweet melody into my ears, I would never grow tired of hearing it or causing it. I love this woman more than life itself.

"Well, it is good that I will never have to live without you, right?" She scooted closer until her face was only a few inches away from mine. She leaned her forehead against mine and breathed a sigh of contentment, I would never grow tired of this feeling.

"Till death do us part." She breathed the words against my skin and I could feel the subtle brush of her lips against mine.

"Yes, till death do us part." I echoed the words and closed the distance between us.

Kissing her felt like home, I am safe in her embrace and touch. Whenever I am in this mood, the world doesn't seem so heavy anymore. I felt lighter and my chest felt free. I had come in with a heavy burden weighing me down and just in a second, my mate had made all my worries disappear.

I had no idea why Elizabeth would even think of robbing this away from her son. Bernard is an Alpha and he would need the support of his one true mate on a day-to-day basis. Yes, Helen had been trained for the role of Luna all her life but Elena was born for it. The moon goddess had chosen her for a reason.

Elizabeth needs to stop trying to fight destiny, she was only delaying the inevitable. Bernard and Elena would find their way to one another again, it is just a matter of time.
