Chapter 95: Confronting

Chapter ninety-five: Confronting

Doris

I took the stairs quickly as I left Elena's room. She was too sweet and angelic to see what was obviously in front of her. It was her mother-in-law who had started the rumors, it all made sense now. She had the motive and she had made it public knowledge to all who listened that Bernard and Helen were the perfect match for each other. I knew Elizabeth well, she was a woman who loved control and thought duty overruled morals and things like love. I had oftentimes admired her for her stance because I always felt like it made her a formidable woman. But now that she was interfering with the future of this Pack, it felt personal.

I walked straight to her house where I knew I would find her. Thankfully, I was right, I found her car parked in her parking lobby. I hadn't prepared what I was going to say at all, I was just going to go with whatever felt right. I walked to the front door and door, I took a step back and waited. She answered and smiled at me sweetly.

"Doris," she beamed.

"It has been so long, how are you?"

"May I come in, please?"

"Of course, dear." She moved aside to let me in. She was really like a wolf in sheep's clothing.

I walked into her home and looked around to see if Helen was around by chance because what I was going to say was only meant for Elizabeth's ears.

"Can I get you something? Maybe some tea, coffee, or maybe even lemonade. I squeezed some not long ago." She smiled like the perfect southern bell.

"No, thank you. I am good, I actually came to speak with you about something important." Her smile dropped from her face.

"What is it all about?"

"It is about Bernard, Elizabeth."

"What about him, is he okay?" Wow, she dared to actually ask.

"Come now, Elizabeth. You know as well as I do that Bernard is not doing well and one of the reasons is because someone released a picture of Elena and Jack."

"Really? I heard no idea about this. Well, she seems like a lovely girl and Jack is a wonderful young man."

"Cut the crap, Elizabeth. I know what you did." I crossed my arms over my chest.

"You started the rumors about Elena and Jack."

"I have no idea what you are talking about." She feigned innocence and started walking towards the kitchen.

I followed her closely behind, we aren't done with this conversation.

"Don't lie to me, Elizabeth. Elena saw you that day, you were heading to Veronica's bakery and she saw you when she came out of the hardware store. Judging from the position where the pictures were taken and where she said she saw your car, you are the only one who could have taken that picture."

She was silent for a moment and busied herself with removing the freshly baked cookies from the pan to a plate.

"What I don't understand is how you, the woman I had looked up to for so many years, turned out to be a class-A bitch." She slammed her spatula onto the granite and glared at me with the fury of a thousand suns.

"You do not disrespect me in my own house, Doris. I am your Luna and you will show me respect."

"Wrong!" I spat.

"You are no longer my Luna. From the moment you crossed over into these lands, Elena became my Luna."

She didn't even bat an eyelash so I know she knew. I had taken a risk by just blurting that information out but I had a good enough read on her face to know that she would have had all necessary information before making a move.

"You know." I pointed my finger at her.

"You knew that they were mates, but you still wanted to break them apart, why?" She didn't even have the audacity to look sheepish about it.

"Don't interfere in matters that are far above your pay grade, Doris. None of this concerns you."

"Doesn't concern me?" I gasped.

"You are messing with the future of this Pack. You and I know that true mates are more successful in their endeavors. We need both Elena and Bernard functioning at their best."

"And who says that what is best for this Pack is...Elena?" She said Elena's name like it was acid on her tongue.

"Fate!" I screamed.

Was she dumb or was she just ignorant? Elena was born to play this role in life. There was no one on this earth better suited for this role than her.

"Fate," she scoffed.

"Fate is purely something people use to run from things they don't want to do. Bernard is no ordinary wolf, Doris. He is an Alpha of one of the most powerful Pack on all of the western coast. Things like power are things that you will never understand because unlike him, you were given power through the ascension of your brother to the position of Beta. Bernard was born into it as well as Helen. She has the blood of an Alpha flowing through her veins, she is Bernard's perfect equal." I rolled my eyes.

"Perfect equal? Helen is a witch, Elizabeth and you know it. I know it, the whole Pack knows it as well but they chose to overlook it because they all believed her arrangements with Bernard were set in stone. But it is not because his true mate exists."

"She is a rogue." She spat.

"She is not fit to be a Luna. She is weak, without power or influence. It is time we stop looking at everything with rose colored glasses on. Life is not roses and sunshine, I know what is best for my son, and what is best for him is to be as far away as possible from that girl."

I raised my hands to heaven in pure disbelief. I couldn't believe that these were her actual words. I never once questioned Elizabeth's love for her son but now? She really seemed delusional. Did she actually believe that she was doing what was best for her son?

"You, of all people, should understand what it is like to have a true mate. You understand the positive impact it has on your life. Are you telling me that if you had been to not marry Alpha Joseph, you would have listened and not gone against it? Knowing how you feel for him, would you have walked away from him all in the name of duty and sacrifices?" Her silence was loud enough and I couldn't believe it.

"I love Joseph but I knew what my role was as the daughter of an Alpha. It was pack over self, it was engraved into my mind at a very young age. It was my ethos and my philosophy. I thank the moon goddess every day that the man I was arranged to marry turned out to be my true mate. But when it comes to Elena and Bernard, the pairing is very wrong." I let out a humorless laugh.

"You are contradicting yourself here, Elizabeth. Do you even understand what you are doing to your son? He has locked himself up in his house and refused to leave. He drowns his sorrows in take-out and cheap beer, soon he will move on to the harder stuff. Elena is a part of his soul and now half of his soul has been ripped out. He is moving around like a damn corpse." She shrugged.

"He will move past it after a few weeks. The pain is not everlasting."

My parents had always told me to respect my elders but I wanted nothing more than to beat Elizabeth with a stick. I stood up from my seat having had enough.

"No matter how hard you try or what you do, Elizabeth. You will never win this fight against their love. They will find their way back together, Bernard will always have love in his heart for Elena, and Elena the same for Bernard. And once Bernard hears of what you have done, he may very well never forgive you."

She remained passive but I knew she had heard my words. I started walking towards the front door.

"Bernard loves her unconditionally and wholly. You are no longer the one woman who takes up his entire heart, Elena is now. You will lose your son forever if you aren't careful, Elizabeth."

With that, I left her in her kitchen. Elizabeth had turned into a woman I didn't recognize almost overnight or maybe she had always been this way but I had never noticed. All I knew was that I needed to get my Alpha and Luna back together.

A war is coming and we need to prepare.
