Chapter 55: Conspiracy
Chapter fifty-five: Conspiracy
Bernard
After Liam left, I went straight to my room, I was slightly tipsy and missing my mate more than ever. I hated the way I behaved at the bakery. I was wrong. I picked up my phone to call her but then I just realized that she didn't have a phone. I needed to get one for her, I needed to be in constant communication with her in order to ease my mind. I knew what I needed to do and I was only delaying the inevitable. I had already made my decision and I must follow it through. I chose Elena and I knew it was her but I was just too scared to admit it to myself. Now, I don't care about the consequences, I am going to get my woman.
I am still weak and recovering from the attack and it annoyed me more than anything else. I need to be out there and carry out my Alpha's duties. I am upset with myself sitting idly, especially when my mate is out there all alone. I had so many emotions inside me but the one that overruled all of them was my love for Elena. There are a lot of things for us to overcome but I knew that as long as we had each other, everything would work out the way it was supposed to be. I didn't want to lose and I also needed her to tell me everything, I didn't care how dark her past was or what she had done. She is mine and that is never going to change.
"I am going to marry you one day, Elena." I murmured to myself and a fluttering filled my chest. I can't wait for the day I am going to put a ring on her finger and confess my love for her loudly and proudly. I wanted to show her off to the world because the moon goddess knew how lucky I was to have her as my mate. Then I heard a knock on my door.
"Go away." I turned over on the bed, I didn't want to see any more visitors. I just needed to sleep and try healing so I could finally stop feeling like some weak pup but then the door opened.
"Is that the way to speak to your mother?" I turned around to see my mother peeking her head through the door. She was smiling at me and I could smell her chicken soup wafting in from behind the door. I perked up immediately.
"Hey mother." I sat up in my bed.
"Hi baby." She looked at me like I was a little child. She entered the room holding a Tupperware container, I was right, it was her chicken soup that I was smelling.
"I come bearing gifts." She said.
"Thanks mother." I smiled, she sat beside me and placed her hand on my forehead.
"Thanks goodness, you are not running temperature. Your father told me that it was wolfsbane that those wolves poisoned you with." I nodded.
"Yes, but the reason it is taking my wolf so long to heal is the type of wolfsbane they used. It was a rare species that happened to be the most potent one. If a normal wolf had been injected with it, they would have died within a second." My mother's face morphed from sympathy to anger. Her reaction confused me because she had no real reason to be upset. The rogues were gone and I was still breathing.
"Mother? What is wrong?" She corrected her features quickly, removing the anger from her face.
"It is just that you shouldn't have been out there. You were meant to be in your house away from the borderline." She said.
"I know but I needed to help out a friend. If I had left her out there alone, I would have never forgiven myself." I responded.
Elena is much more than a friend but my mother didn't need to know that. My father had said that he would speak to her but judging by the way she hadn't congratulated me yet on finding my true mate, he hasn't spoken to her.
"I understand that my boy but you can't save everyone. Sometimes, people just need to be left to their own devices. You are an Alpha, you need to think of your Pack and Helen before risking your life like that. Imagine what they would all feel if they lost you." She said to me.
Helen isn't my mate and what she thought or feared didn't matter to me. The only person I cared about was Elena, she was all that mattered to me. When it came to Elena, I would risk and resist everything just to have her safe in my arms.
"I know mother but to be honest, I don't care about what Helen thinks or fears. She is not my concern at all." My mother gasped.
"Bernard Joseph, that is not the way to speak about your mate. Of course, you should care about what she thinks and fears. She will be your Luna and the mother of your unborn babies." She said.
No, she wouldn't. The mother of my unborn babies and my future Luna had fiery red hair and hypnotic blue eyes. She is the only decision that I am so sure of in my life.
"Mother, I need to tell you something." She held her hand up.
"Wait, before you do, I have some news. I found you a wedding venue, it is really beautiful and is located by the lakeside. I already talked to Helen about it and she liked it." She muttered.
"That is actually what I wanted to talk to you about. I need to tell you something.
"You know Elena, right?" I asked and she shook her head.
"She is the one with beautiful red hair and sapphire blue eyes."
"Oh." She waved me off.
"The rogue?" She asked and I swallowed my snide comment that I was about to say, remembering that this is my mother, not a random she-wolf.
"Yes, that is Elena. Well, she and I are…."
"I saw her walking to the lake with that nice gamma boy, the one who works at the mechanic shop downtown. What is his name again?" She thought about the man's name.
"Jack Morgan, such a sweet boy he is. They were even walking hand in hand with one another."
"What?"
"Elena, the rogue, and Jack Morgan were headed to the lake together. They said something about a date or something of the sort. I wasn't exactly sure what the words were but Bernard they look good together. The girl was beaming from ear to ear and she couldn't stop smiling and blushing. I think they might be made." My mother's words hurt and I tried to stop the growl that threatened to leave my chest from coming out.
This can't be true, there is no way that my Elena would do something like this. She is my mate.
"Mother, what are you talking about? Elena isn't Jack Morgan's mate." She shook her head.
"They might not be mates but the way they looked at each other showed how deeply they were in love. I have seen the look on their faces, my son. Your father and I share the same looks." I lost my appetite all of a sudden. The news about Jack and Elena had me feeling nauseous.
I suspected something in the bakery but Elena had convinced me otherwise. My instincts were rarely ever wrong but because she was my mate, I believe her. Was she playing with me? Did she even want to be with me? She had tried so many times to run away, she didn't want to be here but I kept bringing her back. I was a fool to have thought that I was her reason for staying. She didn't want me, she never wanted me.
"Thanks for the soup, mother but I just need to rest now."
"Are you okay, my boy? Do you need me to call Liam?" I shook my head.
"No, I just need to sleep this off." She nodded her head and got up to leave. She placed a motherly kiss on my forehead and placed the chicken soup on the side of my bed.
As soon as she left, I slid down my bed and placed my head on my pillow. I closed my eyes and willed the darkness to come and swallow me whole. Only a few hours ago, I was thinking of marrying Elena and I am feeling broken and wounded. A part of me refused to believe what my mother said but why would my mother lie to me? She had no reason to do so.
I know she didn't like Elena and she had been planning with Helen to hurt her and she knew that this would devastate me but still, she was blind to see how I felt about Elena. I am sure she knew the truth. If not she would never purposefully hurt me for the sake of Elena, I am sure of it.
Elena, my wolf whimpered. He was devastated. This is not the news we had been expecting today at all.
