Chapter 196: Happy Ending
Chapter 196: Happy Ending
Doris
It was already midnight and we were stuck in the waiting room of the hospital. I wasn't expecting Elena to go into labor so soon but I guess the baby wanted to be out now and to be present for the birth of the new Alpha, the feeling was unexplainable.
Eight hours had passed and yet now news, we hadn't even gotten a whisper, even with the nurses running back and forth. Was Elena alright? Bernard is with her, I was still as tense as ever.
"Doris, it will be fine. She has Bernard." My husband kissed my head and I eased into his hold.
"I know."
I knew that Elena was going to be right, she is a strong woman and she is giving birth to a new generation. My only issue was with how long it was taking.
"Every pregnancy is different," Alisha said from the other side of the chair. She has a blanket over her as she breastfeeds her son.
"I think I took close to ten hours if I could remember correctly."
"It was just under ten hours." Jack corrected, smiling at her.
"You are right, I just rounded up." She laughed.
"Does it seriously take that long? How is that even possible?"
Jasper sat next to me but he was hiding his face in his hands. Was it something I said?
"Something, it can take a lot longer." Alisha replied.
"Seriously?" Jasper peeked at me and I could see the redness in his cheeks.
"What? We are not having kids anytime soon, not if I have to go through all that."
No way, it was another five hours before any news came at all. Jasper had already fallen asleep on my shoulder and Alisha was also asleep with her baby. One of the nurses had brought a crib for her to place her son into so that they both could rest. I didn't think that it would take this long for Elena to get through the pregnancy. I just hope that she is okay.
As soon as I thought it, though, Liam came out of the room and approached us.
"How is she, Liam?" Jack was the first to ask, Jasper stirred as I shifted position.
"She is good, she is resting now and Bernard is taking care of the baby with the nurses."
"So everything went smoothly?" He smiled.
"Yes, she actually got through it a lot quicker than most."
I tried to hide my shudder, the image being in that room longer than that.
"When can we see her?"
"She is awake but exhausted, so don't overwork her too much." He laughed.
We followed Liam back into the room where he moved a curtain aside. Elena lay on the bed with a blanket over the lower half of her body, her eyes were closed initially when we entered but when she heard our movement, she cracked open one of them.
"How are you feeling now, Elena?"
I sat on the chair next to her bed and wiped a stray bead of sweat from her forehead.
"I am okay, just tired and sore." She smiled at me before closing her eyes momentarily once again.
"You will get your strength back quickly." Alisha approached the other side of the bed.
"It might be tough at first, especially bringing the baby out but you will get used to it."
"Thank you, Ali."
"Where is the little man anyway?" I glanced around but Bernard was nowhere to be found.
"She is wrapped daddy around her little finger." Elena giggled.
"Her? I thought you said it was going to be a boy?" Elena tried to shrug but gave up as her shoulder barely moved.
"Liam said that it's never completely accurate, sometimes it is a surprise. But I think Bernard is actually happier with a daughter right now."
As if he heard his name, Bernard peeked his head through the door and grinned at all of us.
"Hey, guys."
He entered the room slowly, his large hands holding up the small bundle that was his daughter. She fussed every few seconds but immediately calmed down as soon as Bernard hummed a few notes. He moved around to the other side of the bed and Alisha stepped out of the way. He handled the baby to Elena, so carefully that you would have thought that it was a bomb. He then kissed the top of Elena's head as she sighed and snuggled her daughter.
"She is beautiful," the words had slipped out of my mouth before I could stop them but they were true.
Their daughter is perfect in every sense of the word, Perfect child for both of them. She is small yet I could sense the strength within her. She would be protected by the entire Pack as she grows up and would be raised to be a leader.
"She is strong." Elena nodded, smiling down at her daughter.
I couldn't imagine going through all of that but the end result surely would make up for it. Maybe one day, we would have children, the sheer awe that was on my husband's face proved that point. I grabbed his hands and squeezed, leaning against his side. One day but not just anytime soon, we will have children.
*******Elena******
"Bernard, are you sure you grabbed everything?"
I was having difficulty getting up the steps to the porch with the diaper bag and carrying my daughter and Bernard was hauling a small horde of items we had gotten for our daughter. It had completely left our mind that we should have been more prepared but what can I say? At least we had it all now.
"Yes, I got it all."
He grunted back at me but it was due to the effort of hauling the items rather than being irritated. I had offered to help make more than one trip but he refused, he is stubborn like that. He wanted to prove that he could do it all on his own which he could and I had no doubt about that.
"Welcome home, Chloe."
I pushed open the door to our house as the staff came rushing out to greet us. I waved them down to Bernard so they could help him, he nodded the most especially as he almost collapsed into the butler when he tripped up a step. I pressed my lips together to hide my grin and entered the house.
It was bustling, the staff moving in and out of the kitchen. One stopped to take a look at Chloe before hurrying on. There were more staff in the house today than I remembered.
"Did you hire new people?" I asked Bernard as he finally made it to my side.
"Oh, just for a couple of weeks. I wanted the extra hands in case something went wrong with Chloe or if we needed help with anything. Since it is our first child, I don't want to mess anything up."
Why is he so perfect? My heart soared as I pushed myself up and kissed his cheek. He is one of a kind.
"What was that for?" He touched his cheek and stared down at me with his eyes widened.
"A thank you," I giggled before moving further into the house and heading towards the room that would be Chloe's.
"For what? I didn't do anything?" He muttered as he followed.
"Can't I tell my mate that I am thankful for him? It is nothing in particular, just for being you." I shrugged it off as no big deal.
He doesn't need to be going to his head anymore than it already was but I wanted him to know how much I loved him for all that he had done for me and now for Chloe.
We both stopped in the doorway to the nursery, the staff did a wonderful job with the decorations. There were small animated stickers of wolves that lined the grey and teal walls. A perfect neutral color since they hadn't known for sure about the gender until we just arrived back home. Though I loved the idea of having a neutral color, it was crisp and clean and was still as adorable as ever.
Chloe cooed in my arms and my heart pumped quicker watching her stare out at the room.
"Thank you for giving me all of this," I whispered.
I wasn't sure who I was saying it to but Bernard didn't answer. He leaned his head against mine and wrapped his arms around my waist, peering down at his precious daughter.
"She is going to change everything." He whispered.
I watched my daughter for a moment, imagining what she would be like once she had grown. She would be a strong wolf, being raised in a Pack that has so much diversity and strength. Not hunted down and forced to live abandoned in the forest, she will be safe here, with us.
"That is it."
Chloe is the beginning of a new generation that will continue our legacy into the next and keep this Pack whole.
The birth of the new Alpha brought so much happiness, and prosperity to the Crescent Wolf Pack. The aura from her was one that had never been seen or heard in the history of the werewolf clan. She was blessed beyond imagination by the moon goddess and they lived happily ever after, in peace and harmony.
