Chapter 46: Bad Dream

Chapter forty-six: Bad Dream

Bernard

I opened the letter and stared at my mate's delicate handwriting. Her letter reads:-

My Dearest Bernard,

We are getting married today, it took a lot for us to get to this point but finally, we are here. You are worth every tear, every heartbreak, and every sorrow. If I was to ask, would you do it again? My answer would be yes, not because what I endured was easy but because you were worth it all.

The next time you see me, I will be home walking down the aisle to become your bride. I will be the one in white.

With all my love,

Your one true mate

Elena (x)

By the time I had finished reading the letter, I felt the tears prickling behind my eyes. I looked out to the mountains once more and smiled.

"See you at the altar, my love." I am finally getting married today.

The venue was situated in my backyard, the area had been transformed into a beautiful space with a large canopy of flowers dangling above us. The guests were situated on the hardwood benches that formed the aisle. White lilies and yellow roses decorated the aisle that I was currently standing at the end of.

I adjusted the bow tie of my suit as Liam stood next to me with a beaming smile. I had been waiting for what felt like a lifetime for this day, our love had been tried and tested and somehow we had managed to endure it all. Now, our time has finally come. It is our wedding day.

"I am so happy for you, man." Liam whispered to me.

I looked out into the crowd and saw my parents sitting in the front row. My mother was beaming at me with a proud smile on her face and my father sat proudly beside her with a similar expression on his face. My heart was beating rapidly from all the excitement I was feeling within my body. I saw the familiar faces of my Pack members and everyone's faces radiated everything that I was feeling, pure happiness and peace. I am going to marry my perfect one today and nothing could wipe the smile on my face.

Soft violins started strumming in the distance, walking down the stairs from my porch was Alisha, the gamma that Elena had taken a liking to. She was dressed in a yellow gown that brought out her beauty, she was also beaming from ear to ear as she walked down the aisle. When she got to the end of the aisle, she beamed at me.

"Congratulations." She whispered as she went to stand on the opposite side of the aisle. The music stopped and then changed to a different melody.

"All rise!" Elder Jeffrey, our most esteemed elder said.

Everyone rose as we waited for Elena's arrival, I could feel my heart beating frantically inside my chest. The moment I have been waiting for has finally arrived. The doors to the porch opened revealing a veiled Elena. Her dress was one of those body-hugging dresses that showed off every curve on her body. I could see a small bit of her fiery red hair falling down her back as she stepped onto the porch. I haven't even seen her face and I already knew that she was absolutely breathtaking. As she walked down the aisle, I couldn't help the emotions that welled up in my chest and when she got to the end of the aisle, all I could think was finally.

She handed her bouquet of yellow roses to Alisha and joined hands with mine. The peace that washed over me when our skin finally touched was a feeling like no other. Home, that is what she is to me. Elder Jeffrey began the ceremony, to be honest, I barely heard what he had said. I was too busy focusing on trying to make out my mate's jewel eyes through the veil. It was so thick that I couldn't even make out the outline of her face.

"You may now kiss the bride." Elder Jeffrey announced and I didn't even remember saying 'l do.' but I didn't care.

I am finally getting to kiss my woman, I heard the whistle coming from the crowd and the soft laughter from the women as they waited for me to lift Elena's veil.

"I love you." I said as I brought her hands to my lips and kissed them. I then dropped them to the side as I took the ends of her veil and slowly began to lift it up. When I had gotten the veil over her head, I looked down expecting to see a pair of sapphire-coloured eyes but instead, I saw hazel eyes. This isn't Elena, the red hair I had previously seen was suddenly blonde now and the beautiful face of my mate was replaced by Helen's.

"What are you waiting for, Bernard? Aren't you going to kiss me?" She asked.

"No, you are not, Elena." I choked out.

"This is a mistake, where is Elena? Someone please find my Elena." I turned to Liam but he was looking at me like I had lost my mind.

"Are you alright, buddy? Kiss her, this is your bride." I felt like my chest was caving in itself.

"No! This is not her, this is not Elena. Where is Elena?" I whirled around and pointed to Helen.

"What have you done with Elena? I know you did something to her." My wolf was close to the surface, I could feel him threatening to come out. I felt a hand on my shoulder and it was from Liam and he was holding me back.

"Calm down Bern. This is your mate. What are you doing?" He said.

"No, she is not!" I growled, trying to break free.

"Where is Elena? Take me to her! That is an order." An evil smile grew on Helen's face as she relished the reaction she was getting from me. I knew that she had done something to Elena. I wrestled against Liam trying to break his hold but he kept me pinned.

Helen then stepped forward and grabbed my chin between her thumb and her forefinger. She elongated her claws and her hazel eyes began to glow a devilish red.

"I am your mate, Bernard. There is only me and will only ever be." She said.

"No!!!!!!!!!!!" My body surged forward in my hospital bed as I gasped deeply. My eyes scanned the whole room, searching for the one person who would make all of this okay.

"Bernard, calm down." My father's voice called from my left.

"You are fine now, it was just a bad dream, that is all." He added.

Was it just a dream? I fell back onto my pillow, my hands coming over my face as I tried to regain control over my racing mind. Thank goodness, it was just a dream.

"What the hell were you even dreaming about?" My father asked.

I didn't remove my hand from my eyes, I kept trying to focus my breathing so I could calm my racing heart down.

"Hell, father. I was in hell." I responded and the room was silent. The only sound was my heavy breathing. The dream was so vivid and so real. I am not a man who was easily shaken but for some reason, that dream, rather a nightmare, had affected me.

"Should I get one of the nurses in here?" I shook my head.

"No, father. I am fine, I just need a moment. I am just a little shaken up, that is all." I replied.

"What exactly happened, son?" I watched him take a seat beside my bed in my peripheral vision. I removed my hands from my eyes and looked up at the ceiling.

"She wasn't there." I murmured.

"Who?" I looked at my father.

"Elena, she wasn't there. We were getting married and I was happy, so happy, and then when I wanted to kiss her, it wasn't her." He thought over my words for a while.

"Who was it instead?" He asked.

"It was Helen." I sighed.

"Helen was standing as my bride and I lost it, father. I freaking lost it in front of the entire Pack all because it wasn't Elena." I looked back to the ceiling. I knew it was all bad but damn it that dream had petrified me right down to my bones. It wasn't the thought of marrying Helen that had scared me, it was the thought of not being with Elena that had me terrified. No world existed where I couldn't be with her, I didn't know how to live a life that didn't include loving her.

"Damn it!" The realization of the words that I had just uttered to myself hit me. I love her, I am in love with Elena.

"What?" My father asked in confusion.

That thought should have scared me, it should have made me want to run and hide but all it did was make me want to hold her close to my chest. I am in love with Elena, I was probably in love with her from the very moment I laid my eyes on her.
