Chapter 110

Chapter 110

Bernard

To say I was stunned would have been an understatement, so much had been said and so many feelings had surfaced. My main concern was Elena who looked like she was sick to her stomach. I knew that hearing some of those things would have confused her and gave her even more questions about her family.

I wanted to know what was going on in her head but she blocked me from entering her mind. Her walls were going back up, she was retracting from me and I hated it. She needed a moment to lie down, so I took her back to the room and lay beside her until she fell asleep. She clung to me so dear like l was her life. What didn't she know that she was mine too. I hated seeing her in so much pain but I knew it was something that she needed to know.

Her chest rose and fell slowly, I knew she was asleep. I pulled myself out of her hold and made my way out of the room. I loved the fact that everything that was mine in the past is now ours, she was the last thing I had expected to happen in my life, and now turned out to be the best gift ever. I never knew what loving someone was until I met Elena, the love we shared was like anything I had ever felt in my whole life.

As I descended the stairs, Liam walked through the front door. I had called him so we could begin work on the preparations for the war. If Kaba was telling the truth, then Richard would stop at nothing to get Elena and that's not going to happen.

"Hey man," he greeted.

"Hi," he hugged.

"Where is Kaba?"

"He is at the back, I will just grab some beer for us. You go ahead, I will follow." He nodded.

Liam headed to the patio at the back of my house. I walked to the fridge and got us some beer and made my way to the back. I found both of them talking about some game they had watched a week ago. I handed them the beer and made myself comfortable.

"To kick the crap out of Richard." Kaba raised his bottle in the air as a toast, and Liam joined him as well.

My mind was burdened with so many things, it was crazy. I not only had my Pack to think about, I also had Elena who is the most important thing in the world to me.

"How is Luna?" Liam looked at me.

"She is holding up but I can tell, it's eating her up inside. She wants to kill Richard."

Liam's eyes widened in shock but Kaba remained passive as they both listened to me.

"Like, she wants to go toe to toe with him?" Liam asked, I nodded.

"Her wolf wants revenge but there is no way she would be able to hold him off. Richard is a ruthless bastard with a taste for blood. I want to believe in my mate, I really do but this is a battle that she will lose."

"I have to disagree with you, Bern." Kaba muttered.

"I think she is more than capable of taking out Richard. She can't beat him with sheer strength but she can outsmart him. You and I know it is not the size that wins the fight."

"So, you are expecting me to just send my mate into the fire and hope for the best that she can beat Richard when I am here. I am fully capable of taking on him myself. There is no need to put her in danger."

"You may feel like that but she wants to get revenge for what he did to get parents and what his ancestors did to hers." Liam cleared his throat.

"Okay, I am a little lost. Can someone fill me in please?"

I explained everything that Kaba had told us to him, but it still sounded so strange. I couldn't believe that this was all happening.

"Let me get this straight, Elena is from an Alpha bloodline that got killed off by Richard's bloodline? And her bloodline was able to survive because of the bastard-born son and now Richard is coming after her to kill her so no one can challenge his position?"

"That's correct," Kaba tipped his bottle on the table.

"I always knew that the man was a little psychotic but I didn't actually believe he was like this."

"So now, what needs to happen?" He looked at me for some firm guidance but truthfully, I was still trying to figure all of that out too.

"I need to keep Elena alive, that is what needs to happen. If Richard crosses my borders without my permission, he knows the penalty for that."

"So, with Nicholas in prison now, what happened next? They don't have access, do you think Richard is getting help like reinforcement?" I nodded.

"I am not too sure but I think Ronald could be a part of it, that is just my assumption, I don't know for sure. I will send some scouts to monitor his land, for now, we work on the assumption that Richard is working alone."

"Richard's warriors are highly skilled and never fight fair. We need to prepare our warriors on how to defend that. We also need to get Elena ready to fight Richard. She is going to need all the training we can get." I slammed my hand on the table.

"Elena is not fighting Richard, I refuse to put my mate in the line of fire. I will not have her go against that psychopath."

"But, it is not up to you, Bern." Kaba muttered.

If he kept going like this, I would be forced to do something I may very well regret.

"Kaba, you are my guest so I will respect you but if you keep talking like that, you will anger my wolf." He leaned back in his chair.

"Bernard, you and I know as well as anyone that when our loved ones are threatened, our first instinct is to seek out revenge. That is Elena's natural instinct now. She is an Alpha, although her gene lies dormant but it doesn't make her any less of an Alpha."

"She will lose against Richard."

"And how do you know that?" My grip on the bottle tightened.

"She has been a wolf that had been on the run for ten years. She knows survival skills but she doesn't know battle skills, she is untrained and naive. You cannot make her stand out against someone like Richard. She will be roadkill within seconds."

Kaba Opened his mouth to speak but Liam quickly intervened.

"Look, I think right now we can just table that issue. We have a few weeks before we need to come to that decision."

"Two weeks." Kaba interjected.

"What?"

"We have two weeks at most until Richard decides to march on Bernard's land." Liam's eyes nearly bulged out of their sockets.

"Is that even enough time to prepare?"

I leaned my elbows on the table and looked at both men sitting with me.

"It will have to be, Kaba is offering us 3000 of his strongest warriors, we have 2000 strong and able-bodied warriors that will reach us to 5000. We have enough but what we need to account for is the toxins that they might use again."

"I may have something but it is still very early days. It's an antidote that could counteract the poison, I will just need to administer it to every warrior before battle and they should be immune to the attacks of the poison." I nodded.

"That's good, at least now we stand a fighting chance against their cheating ways."

Both of them hummed in agreement and we fell into a comfortable silence.

"By the way, was that an engagement ring I saw on Elena's finger?" Kaba smiled at me, I felt myself sit up a little higher and my chest puffed out a little more.

"Yes, Elena Williams will soon be Elena Joseph." Liam's face split into a brilliant smile as he looked at me.

"Who would have thought that at the beginning of the year, you would be where you are now. Engaged and mated to your fated one, isn't life just funny?"

"Sure, it is. Although my relationship with Elena didn't start on the greatest of notes, I know that she is the love of my life and I wouldn't trade her in for anything on this earth. If I had to do it all over again just so I could get her in the end, I would gladly."

"To Elena," Kaba raised his bottle in the air.

"May the moon goddess give her strength to put up with your annoying ass." I rolled my eyes but I raised my bottle in the air and toasted my mate.

A lot is coming to us but I knew that we would make it out alive. There is no other option but to come out victorious. We stayed and talked some more about strategies and the upcoming football matches. Once they started to set, Liam decided to head home and Kaba headed to the Packhouse where his room had been allocated to him.

I headed upstairs to see if Elena was finally awake. I entered the room and found her wrapped in a towel, freshly showered, and looking out at the view. She looked over her shoulder at me but didn't say anything. She was deep in thought. I hated that she felt so burdened and troubled. I wanted no more than to make all that hurt and pain go away. I walked behind her and enveloped her into my arms. She leaned into me and I nuzzled my nose into the crock of her neck.

"Are you okay, my love?" I kissed the grove between her neck and her shoulder.

"Yes," she breathed.

"I needed that nap, it stopped spinning a bit."

Silence fell on us as we watched the sunset behind the mountains. Having her in my arms like this made the outside noise seem quieter and all our problems ceased to exist. I wished that we could live in this little bubble of ours instead of having to face reality.

"We are going to win, right, Bernard?" I tightened my hold on her waist and kissed her skin once more.

"We have to win, Elena. There are no other options."

War is coming whether we are ready or not.
