Chapter 102: A Date
Chapter 102: A Date
Alisha
I walked into the bakery and saw Veronica behind the counter. She smiled at me and called me over.
"Good morning, Veronica." I beamed.
"Is Elena here? We agreed that we were going to work on the ramp today." She shook her head.
"She hasn't come in for two days now but you and I know the reason."
We both shared a knowing smile and then burst into a fit of laughter. Ever since their little kissing scene in the Gamma's house, they had locked themselves in Alpha Bernard's house. After the road they had to travel to get to where they are now, they deserve it. So much had happened to them and they deserved a little joy and happiness.
"I guess it will just be me and Jack for today." I laughed.
"Has he come in yet?"
"Yes, he said he would be back just after he ran another errand he had to do for the shop. Can I get you anything?"
"Ginger tea would be great, Veronica. Thank you."
She went inside and started preparing my tea. I watched her as she worked. I heard the door ding as a new customer came in. It was a young couple that was holding hands and laughing with each other. They grabbed two menus and made their way to one of the empty tables at the corner of the cafe area. I couldn't help but stare at them, they had something that I had craved ever since I was a little girl.
Usually, female wolves find their mates at the age of twenty-one. I am now twenty-three, although I am still within the range but my time is running out. I had a feeling that I was one of the unfortunate wolves who didn't have a fated mate. But that didn't mean love was not for me. I could still find it but I just wouldn't have the benefits of a mate bond, I would still get the mind link when I mated but the unconditional love would have to be built little by little and wouldn't be instantaneous like with a mate bond.
I was startled when someone sat next to me on the high chairs. I looked to my left to find Jack staring at me with a playful smile on his lips.
"You scare easily, Ali." He nudged me gently with his shoulder.
For some reason, the way he said my name had my heart feeling fluttery. I had noticed this same feeling when Elena had introduced us even though we had met before.
"I am just naturally a nervous person." I tried to play off my embarrassment with a laugh.
Goodness, why couldn't I be cool, calm, and collected around him? Veronica came over and handed me my tea, she turned to Jack and asked if he would like anything.
"I will have the same as hers, Veronica. Thank you."
She left to prepare his tea. I looked back at the couple and they were smiling at each other like they were the only two people on this earth, I wondered what that was like. I wondered what it felt to be loved so truly and wholly by another person.
"Why are you staring at them?" I snapped my neck to Jack and blushed. Great, now he probably thought I was some kind of creeper.
"Nothing." I averted my gaze and looked at my tea.
"It is dumb." I dared to steal a glance his way, he was staring at me.
"I like looking at happy couples, it gives me a sense of hope for myself."
"What do you mean?"
"I know I shouldn't say this but I think at this point I believe I don't have a fated mate. I am kind of sad about that fact but I also know that I still have a chance of finding true love. You know that kind of love that leaves you speechless, the kind of love that takes your breath away. The kind of love that Elena has….." my voice trailed off.
"Oh my goodness, I sound so cheesy. Forget everything I just said."
"No, please, it is not cheesy at all." He reassured me with a smile.
"We are all searching for that special something, aren't we? As wolves, we were created to be paired and not left to wander alone. We are special creatures and we need constant interaction with other wolves." I returned his smile.
"So what about you? Do you have a special someone you feel that way with?"
"Not yet but I have a feeling I may find her soon."
There was something in his tone that sounded suggestive but I didn't want to read too much into it and give myself false hope. Veronica came back with his tea.
"Bless all of you for wanting to do this for my husband. He will be so excited about being able to come into the bakery again. It has been so long since I have had him here."
"It is our pleasure but it was Elena who is to thank for all of this. By the way, where is Elena? Shouldn't she have been here by now?" Veronica and I exchanged knowing smiles.
"I think Luna will be otherwise preoccupied. After the little show they put on the garden, I don't think we will be seeing her for quite some time." He looked slightly taken aback.
"He finally did it?" I nodded.
"They got all the rumors squared up and cleared. Which is great cause those two deserve the absolute world, they will make great leaders for this Pack."
"Hmmm." Veronica hummed in agreement.
"They sure will, I will head back to the kitchen. Let me know if you two need anything."
She walked away from the counter and sauntered back to the kitchen. I looked over my shoulder again to steal a glance at the happy couple and smiled when I saw the guy grab the girl's hand and kiss it gently. It was the smallest gesture that made the biggest impact.
When I looked back at Jack, he was already staring at me. There was a twinkle in his brown eyes that had my heart fluttering. Although, I have spoken with him once now something felt different between us. I knew I liked him even before Elena introduced us.
"What do you like to do for fun, Ali?" Again, my name on his lips sounded like honey to my ears.
"I love doing anything outdoorsy. I love nature and everything that has to do with it."
"What are your favorite outdoor activities?" I shrugged.
"Swimming, hiking, running and I love fishing but I have been to the river a couple of times and caught nothing."
"Well, you are in luck." He smirked.
"I happen to be a great fisherman and I hand an opening in my class if you would like some pointers." I felt my heart harmer in my chest.
Was he asking me out on a date? No, don't be ridiculous Alisha. I scolded myself, he was just offering you fishing lessons. This was just purely a friendly invitation, there was nothing romantic about it.
"I would love to, just name the time and place. I will be there."
"How about next week?" I nearly faltered.
"Yes, sure, sounds great."
"It is a date then. Are you ready to get started?" He hopped off his chair and extended his hand to me.
I moved like I was in a trance, I took his hand and we walked to the back room where the supplies had been placed. Has Jack Morgan just asked me for a date? Or was I dreaming? I looked at the back of his head as we walked.
I hoped I wasn't reading too much into this because my heart would have a hard time healing if I was wrong about all the signals I was getting. I guess only time would tell.
