Chapter 141: The Truth Is Out

Chapter 142: Truth Is Out

Liam

"Are you sure that this is why we would find him?" Jasper nodded under the darkness of the night.

"Yes, this is where he should be patrolling tonight, I am the one who created the schedule."

We walked a little farther into the woods, tonight wasn't a full moon so the light was very limited even with our heightened vision. Jasper stopped and whistled into the night sky, he waited and listened.

"What are you….."

"Shh," he cut me off.

After a few seconds, Jones and another warrior that I didn't recognize came through the thick shrubbery in human form, they wore cargo pants and were barefoot.

"Beta, Liam." They bowed their heads in greeting.

"Jones, I only need you." He ordered the other warrior to return back to his position. It was so strange seeing him be in full Beta mode, it suited him, almost like he was born for the role. The warrior nodded and leaped back into the shrubbery shifting mid-air. We listened to his paw hit the ground and then he took off.

We turned back our attention to Jones who looked slightly uneasy. As a part of my training to become a Beta, I had been taught to read people very well, I watched for their tells and any signs of nervousness. Jones was a walking billboard of tell, his forehead was beaded with sweat even though we were in the middle of fall. He could never keep his eyes on us for longer than two seconds and he kept scratching his neck very often.

"What can I do for you, Beta?" His voice came out so even, it was a shame the rest of his body had already given him away.

"I think you know why we are here, Jones." I stepped forward.

"Do you love your Alpha, Jones?"

"With my whole heart," he stood up a little straighter.

"Do you love your Alpha?" I stared at him dead in the eyes, he held my gaze and didn't even bat an eyelash.

"Yes, I live to serve my Alpha in any way he wants and needs."

He was telling the truth, he was patriotic when it came to his leader and his people. I abandoned all thought of thinking that maybe he being the father of the child Helen is currently carrying some kind of power play. Then I was left with two other possibilities, one, he actually loved Helen and had genuinely wanted to be with her or it was just a random hookup gone wrong. But even then Jones must have known that Helen was technically Bernard's betrothed.

"I am going to ask you a question and I need you to answer me truthfully. You won't get into trouble, we just need to know all the facts so that no harm or distress comes to the Alpha of this Pack, understand?" He nodded his head slowly, almost like he was unsure of his own answer.

"Is there a possibility that the child Helen Elison is carrying belongs to you?"

My words hung in the air, dangling above us. He looked at me then to Jasper and turned back to me again.

"Tell me, Jones. Are you the father of the pup that Helen is carrying? You will not get into trouble and your position in the Pack will not be affected. We just need to know the truth because your answer could shift the course of everything." He looked at his feet and then back to us.

"It was only one night when I saw her at the bar in Shacklewood. We were out with some friends, I didn't know who she was at first but when I recognized her, I was about to leave her but then she started crying and I felt sorry for her. We started drinking together and then one thing led to another and we…."

"Had sex?" Jasper finished off his word.

"Yes," he looked embarrassed and ashamed.

If we were being honest here, he had no reason to feel any sort of shame. This was all on Helen, she was the one who had turned up here pregnant and lied about the father of her child. I didn't even need to wait for the DNA test now, Jones was all the proof I needed. He had no reason to lie to us.

"I needed to do something." I stepped in front of him.

"I am going to search your mind and it is probably going to hurt when I do it so bare, I just need to go to the time you saw Helen."

He looked nervous but nodded his head despite the anxiety he probably felt. I placed my palm on his forehead, closed my eyes, and focused on penetrating through his mind. I had only done this twice before and both times had been tiresome and hard on the other person. I felt his barrier and then I pushed forward, as I pushed forward, he let out a groan, he must have felt my push.

"Don't fight me, Jones. Let me in and it will be easier."

I felt his wall come down and then I had the access I needed. I sifted through his memories, it was easy enough to navigate through his newer memories as they were at the forefront of his mind. I started to push further into his mind. I pushed deeper, his grunts and groans intensified. I did my best to speed up the process but I wanted to make sure that I didn't miss anything, so I pushed a little further until I found it. I watched the memory play out, I released him when I was done. He fell back a couple of steps but he quickly caught himself. Entering into someone's mind was never an easy task, it was much harder on the other person than it was on me simply because I was the one invading.

" Did you see it?" Jasper asked, I nodded and turned my attention to Jones.

"You will need to give a detailed account to your Alpha."

He looked like he was about ready to soil his pants, he thought that we were talking about punishing him.

"Jones, you are not going to be punished, you have my words and Jasper's. If anything, Bernard will be relieved at your confession, you have nothing to worry about."

His shoulder sagged in relief, he is a good man who decided to lay in bed with a she-devil. Helen is an attractive woman but she has the heart of a witch and the ambition of a dictator, she is not to be trusted.

"So what do we do now?" Jasper turned to me.

"We still have to wait for the paternity test to be done but now, we should go and tell Bernard. It was meant to be their engagement party today and they had to cancel it because of all of this."

"It is after midnight, they will probably be sleeping by now."

"We wake them up, this is not the news we can keep to ourselves. Those two had been through enough already, they deserve to rest knowing that their bond is not under threat." Jasper hummed in agreement.

"Come on Jones, it is time to save your Pack."

We started walking towards Bernard's house. I knew he had gone home with Elena because the nurse had informed me before they left the hospital. What a crazy 24 hours this had been, we had gone from happiness and joy to sadness and panic and now to relief and joy again.

We made it to his front door within twenty minutes, Jasper knocked on the door like he was a dainty little fairy. I pushed him aside and banged on the door like I was being murdered.

'Wake up, Bernard!' I shouted into our mind link, I knew he would be pissed at me but this was something that could not wait.

After a few seconds, the light came on followed by some heavy footsteps. Great, he is coming downstairs. He opened the door, looking like he wanted to murder me.

"This better be good or I am going to throw you in the river with a brick cylinder tied to your feet."

"That's morbid, Bernard, even for you." I stepped through the threshold forcing him back.

"We came bearing news."

"Couldn't it wait till tomorrow?"

"No," I looked over my shoulder at Jones.

"Bernard, meet Jones, one of your patrol wolves."

"I know who he is."

"Great, well Jones is here to save the day and make all the nonsense with Helen disappear like it never happened."

He curled an eyebrow at me and then looked at Jones, who still looked like he was ready to piss his pants.

"Liam, stop beating around the bush and just get to the point. I am tired and my mate is upstairs sleeping."

"Jones is the father of Helen's child."

He blinked once, looked at Jones, and then to Jasper and me. He blinked twice, ran a hand through his hair, he blinked thrice, his eyebrows furrowed in confusion.

"It is true, I have searched his mind. He had sex with Helen a few months back and then she fell pregnant with his child. She knew that you would never leave Elena so she is using this pregnancy as a way to drive a wedge between the two of you."

"I am going to make her sorry." He growled.

Jones's face contorted as he frowned at Bernard's words, it was understandable seeing as she was carrying his pup. He wouldn't want anyone to harm his child, so we needed to proceed with caution when dealing with this issue. It wasn't only Helen and Ronald involved.

"Why don't we go inside and talk, we have a lot to discuss. Like how we are going to proceed with everything." He nodded and opened the door wider for us to enter.

Now that the truth was unearthed, we needed a plan that not only pleased Bernard but also protected the unborn child. It is innocent in all of these ways and is technically a part of the Crescent Wolf Pack.
