Chapter 28: Are You Jealous?
Chapter 128: Are You Jealous?
Elena
Bernard and I walked to the ground floor of the hospital with our hands joined together, I was squeezing his hand for my dear life, trying to anchor myself to the moment because I felt like I was barely holding on.
We were surrounded by so many dead bodies, it saddens me. I tried to take on Elizabeth's words and they were offering me some kind of comfort but they didn't erase everything.
"Are you okay?"
"There were so many deaths and it saddens me. Why do I feel like we didn't win?" Bernard sighed and stopped us in the middle of the hallway.
"This is your first battle and it won't be your last. I remembered after my first battle, I felt sick to my stomach, we lost a lot of people that day but we also gained peace in our Land." He cupped my face.
"It took a while for me to get over that but I had to try to find the silver lining. I know you are struggling right now and I just want you to know that I am here for you, my love. No matter what."
I need to lean into my mate and not try to bear all of it on my own. We continued walking towards the casualty department. We past a nurse and she smiled when she saw us.
"You are Ivory's nurse, right?" Bernard asked.
"Yes, Alpha."
"Is she awake now?"
Yes but a bit loopy from the morphine but she seems much better than before. Would you like to see her?"
"Yes," Bernard turned to me.
"Can you handle the casualties alone, my love?"
I felt this unpleasant wave of annoyance spread through my chest. I knew that Ivory was one of his best friends but I was his mate. I went through the test alone but I wouldn't face the mourning families alone.
"Can we not see her later, Bern?" I felt horrible by asking that, he is my mate and he is showing more care and attention to his ex-girlfriend than he is to me.
"Elena, you know Ivory just had major surgery. She doesn't have her parents anymore, I am her only family now. I need to be there for her."
"And what about me? Can you not be there for me too?"
"I have always been there for you, Elena. I was with you the entire time." I shook my head.
"No, that was us doing our duties to the Pack. We were there for other people." He furrowed his eyebrows.
"Elena?"
I looked away, unable to look into his eyes. I knew I was being a bit dramatic but he had already seen her today, wasn't that enough? I didn't like having to share him.
"Never mind, go and see her. I will be downstairs with other casualties."
I was about to enter the elevator but he caught my arms. The nurse was looking at us nervously but she did say anything. We were her leaders and we were having a lovers quarrel in front of her.
"You can go, I don't want to delay you from your work" I told her and she left us. I turned my attention back to Bernard who was looking at me curiously.
"What has gotten into you?" I shrugged.
"Nothing, I am just tired and I probably need to lie down. After I am done, I will meet you at home. I am sure you and Ivory will have so much to catch up."
Then, like a light bulb went off in his head, a knowing smile crept onto his face.
"Elena, are you jealous of Ivory?" I blushed.
"No, why would I be? You are my mate."
"I don't know, you tell me."
"I am not jealous," I turned to him looking him dead in the eyes.
"Is there a reason for me to be?"
"No," he dropped his hand from my face and went to my hips.
"I am yours and yours alone, there is no other woman that I see other than you. Ivory is a friend and will always be a friend."
He may have viewed her as a friend but did she view him as a friend? It wasn't that I didn't trust him but I barely knew Ivory, she was his first love and vice versa.
"Stop overthinking it, my love." He kissed the top of my head.
"I can see the wheel turning in your head already."
Yes, he is mine and mine alone but I hated that I had to share him with everyone else. I had never been a possessive person before but ever since we marked each other, I felt very territorial.
"You know what," he stepped away from me and grabbed my hand.
"We are going to see her together so you see for yourself that nothing is going on between us anymore."
"Bernard, I don't want to intrude."
"Nonsense, she will love you because I love you."
It was useless arguing with him, once he made up his mind, there was nothing you could do to persuade him. I allowed him to drag me into the elevator and take me to Ivory's room. The last time I talked to her was the first time I met her. She was strong and abrasive and now, looking at it, she was just trying to look out for my and Bernard's relationship.
Bernard knocked on the door and waited for a response. Ivory was lying on the bed when we entered her room. Her hair was shiny and healthy the last time I met her but here, it looked like she was struggling to even breathe. Bruises all over her arms and she was dripping.
"Are you obsessed with me or something? Twice in a day?" She smiled at us as we approached her bed.
"Maybe I should get a restraining order." Bernard chuckled, pulling me along.
We came to a halt in front of her bed, her eyes moved from Bernard to my face. Her weak smile went even wider as she saw me.
"Elena or should I say Luna, you came to see me."
I felt kind of horrible now, I had wanted Bernard to skip out on time with her for my selfish reasons.
"Hey, Ivory, how are you feeling?"
"I am high as a kite," she beamed.
"They gave me the really good stuff, courtesy of this handsome fella right here."
She placed her hand on top of his and my eyes zeroed on it. My wolf was stirring but I tried to push her back. This is not the time nor the place to react impulsively. I had to remind myself that they were just friends and nothing more. I kept repeating that chant in my head trying to calm my wolf but she wasn't listening. Ever since I became a full Alpha, my wolf felt strong and with that came heightened emotions.
"We saw your nurse in the elevator, she told us that you were awake."
She is nice, isn't she?"
This woman had the audacity to wink at my mate, her hand still had not left my mate and my wolf was growing angrier by the second. She was touching what belonged to us. I let out a low growl as my wolf began surfacing more. Her eyes caught me and she followed my gaze to her hand that was on top of Bernard's. She looked between me and the hand and then let out a loud laugh. She winced and clutched her side from laughing so hard. Bernard looked like he too was trying to fight a smile from creeping onto his face.
"What?"
"Elena, I can assure you that you shouldn't be the one worrying about me stealing Bernard from you. It should actually be him worrying about me stealing you from him." I looked at them still confused.
"Elena, I am not into men. The nurse you guys met in the elevator is Nelly. She is my girlfriend."
"What?" Both Bernard and I said at the same time.
"You knew?" I looked to Bernard for answers.
"I knew she was a lesbian but I didn't know she had a girlfriend, this is the first time I have heard it." He turned his attention back to Ivory.
"So, congratulations are in order. I guess we have been both too busy to keep each other updated in our lives."
"I guess so," she replied.
"But, at least we are catching up now. So, Elena, don't worry. I am not trying to steal your man, you can have him but if you ever get bored of him and want to try the other side of things then let me know."
"Ivory?" Bernard reprimanded her.
"You have a girlfriend now and Elena is happy with me. We are engaged or have you forgotten?"
"Hey," she held her hands up in mock surrender.
"I am just letting the lady know she has options. Don't let him scare you away, I am just one call away."
I couldn't help but laugh at her antics, she is funny and her aura was so infectious, I liked it. I felt so silly for what I had thought before. She wasn't a threat to our relationship, she was a potential friend and confidant.
I believe that this could be the start of a beautiful relationship.
