Chapter 65: Revenge
Chapter sixty-five: Revenge
Jasper
I left Doris after she told me what her brother was up to. My wolf was still reeling from the discovery. I had sensed that Nicholas was up to no good and I had been right. Bernard refused to see it but I guess it was because he trusted his Beta. He was wrong too.
We all grew up together, for a time Nicholas was okay and we got along. We were all friends but then somewhere along the line, he changed. Bernard and Liam started their training for Alpha and Beta respectively while I began my training as a warrior and tracker. Nicholas had this air of bitterness that followed him during those days. He was with me when we were training to be a warrior but he was even training with the rest of us. He would pass snide comments about how he was meant and made for me.
At that time, I had thought nothing of it, I had thought he was just bitter at the fact that he didn't have the Alpha or Beta gene but now, looking back, that was probably when he first started formulating his plan. Had I known his true intentions at that time. I would have never vouched for him when Bernard came to ask whether he shook to make him Beta or not.
"Damn it, Jasper." I was one of Bernard's guards. It is my job to sniff out threats and little had I known there was one under my nose this entire time.
I had no real proof that he was actually planning this, it was all word of mouth at this point. Lawfully speaking, Bernard could do nothing without solid proof, I couldn't go to him with this news just yet otherwise Nicholas would know that it was Doris who had told me. That would have created a whole other mess in itself. The best I could do for now was keep a close eye on Nicholas. I needed to know his every move and his whereabouts at all times.
"Captain!" One of my subordinates called to me and I turned around to face them.
"We are still awaiting your orders for today's patrol."
What?"
"You know today is our team's patrol duty. You haven't given the patrol orders, Sir."
"Oh, yes yes." My mind had been so clouded that I had forgotten I was on duty for patrol.
"Okay," I gave him the instructions on how to carry out the patrol orders and he nodded.
"Yes sir." I will tell the rest of the patrol guards and if there are any issues, we will notify you first." He replied.
"Good, you can leave now." He took off running in the direction of where I presumed the rest of my patrol team was.
I sighed and started walking towards the forest. As I was far enough into the forest, I stripped down until I was naked. Our clothes never shifted with us when we turned into wolves, where they ripped apart to shreds due to the sheer size of our inner beasts. I was tired of having to buy new clothes every time I shifted without undressing. I loved being in wolf form but if I wasn't disciplined about removing my clothes, I would have no clothes left after a month. I started in a light jog and then picked up to a sprint. Once I had enough momentum going, I leaned into the air and shifted into my wolf and when my paws hit the ground, I took off. I love the power that my wolf gave me, the speed in my legs and the power in my bounds made me feel invincible. I felt more of myself in wolf form than I did in human form. Then a black wolf appeared next to me, running in the same direction.
"Captain." He greeted me through the mind link and I grunted in return. We continued our journey to the Western border of the Pack land.
Usually, patrol days were quiet and our most recent issue was when Elena had crossed into our territory but other than that, patrol was usually very easy. We would spot the odd rogue here and there but they were never dumb enough to cross over into our Pack lands because if they did, they knew the consequences and many were never willing to change it. We came to a grinding halt on the edge of the territory. The forest opened up to a clearing that separated our land from Alpha Ronald's land.
"You take the east side while I will take the north side." I gave my orders to him through the mind link. He nodded and took off in the direction I had sent him. I took my position and started my duty for the day. My shift usually runs from now until after midnight when a new team would come to relieve us of our duties.
I was well into my duty and when I heard a sound coming from just beyond the borders, instantly my senses were on high alert. I zeroed in on the areas beyond the borders and I saw a slight movement in the distance but I was a little too far away. I didn't want to cross over the borderlines as that would put me in a vulnerable position.
"Sam, I see a movement on the western side of the line. Do you have any movement on your side?" I asked him through the mind link.
"No, all is clear on my side. Do you need me there, sir?" He was sent back.
Don't worry, stay there and I will wait and see what other trespassers do. If they come closer, I will act but for now, they are teetering too far away from the line for me to do anything." I closed the link and focused on the wolf that seemed to be drawing closer now. As he came closer, I could see that he wasn't alone. There were four other wolves with him.
When I got a closer look at the lighter wolf, I realized that it looked familiar. I didn't know where I had seen him before but I was too sure that I had seen him before. I racked my brain, trying to figure it out as I watched the wolves. They looked like they were waiting for something or maybe it was someone. The gray wolf that stood to the light brown had a slight limp to its step, it was injured.
What had injured it? Were they trying to find help? If they need help then why wouldn't they just approach the borderline. All I knew was that whoever these wolves were, they were not friendly ones.
"Stand by, I have four wolves on the western side of the border and one seems to be injured." I said through the mind link.
The brown wolf turned its head to look at me and when its glowing amber eyes connected with mine, I was taken to a place. I would have much rather forgotten. Chaos had struck one of the eastern Packs and Alpha Jones had been called in to help to neutralize the situation. A Pack of wolves from another neighboring Pack had wreaked havoc on the Dark Wood Pack. They had turned everything upside down. They had been looking for something but they never said what.
I was part of a warriors group that accompanied Alpha Jones to help capture and find these wolves. We were away from home for almost nine days when we found the wolves. What we had hoped would be a peaceful takedown turned out to be a bloodbath. We had gone with twelve wolves in our tracking group and we returned with only four. The six wolves that had attacked the Dark Wood Pack had been all killed and neutralized, all except for one.
He had been the one who had escaped me. He had also been the one who was responsible for the death of three of my close friends. The face of his wolf was an image that he had lost over time but his eyes. Those eyes were permanently etched into my memory, never to be removed. They were an amber color that reminded me of a blazing inferno. They were the last thing I had seen before my body shut down and fell into unconsciousness. It was him, he was alive and he was right in front of me.
Just like his name entailed, he was a skillful warrior who specialized in the offense. He was precise and he was faster than most warriors I had ever seen. He was strong and he had the mind of a fox. He moved with stealth and confidence, he was the ultimate predator. I told myself that one day, I would avenge the death of my friends. I would stop at nothing until this man was six feet underground and dead but before then, I would make him pay, he would suffer for a little while, and finally put him out of his misery. Then it occurred to me that if he is here, it means that he needed something. He was a man of order, he didn't just roam the lands aimlessly.
What could he possibly want? And where did he want it from? Right now, he lingered between Bernard's land and Ronald's land. So it was unsure which side had what he was looking for. As if sensing my gaze, he lifted his head and looked in my direction. He paused for a moment and we were caught in a stare down. He was looking at me with curiosity and then realization crossed his eyes. He remembered me too.
Good, it would make taking revenge that much sweeter. He turned away from me and looked at his other friends, the four wolves looked at me and then turned away. All of them took off running in the opposite direction of where I stood. Not one of them glanced back to where I was. He is back and I didn't know how to feel about it.
