Chapter 82: Make Him Pay

Chapter eighty-two: Make Him Pay

Bernard

I had been tied up with work the entire day. After Elena had left my house for work, I got ready as well but the problem was that I missed her. It was like I needed her with me every waking second. Whenever she wasn't with me, I felt this unexplained void deep in my chest and because of that, I threw myself into work to make the hours tick by quickly.

Her shift was meant to end three hours ago but she hadn't come yet. It was times like this that I wished I had bought a phone for her. I hated not being able to be in constant communication with her. I didn't want to be the overly clingy and in-your-face type of boyfriend but I couldn't help it when it came to her. She had some rogues after her and at any moment she could be captured.

Logically speaking, I knew that it wasn't possible, seeing as they would need to get past my patrol warriors but my mind couldn't help but get worried. I guess this was one feature of being mates that I had yet to come to terms with. I looked at the clock again and it was 3:30 pm, her shift was meant to end at noon and it always took her twenty to thirty minutes to get on the bus and make it into the Pack center but it had been over three hours and she wasn't here.

"She is fine, Bernard. She is doing her independence thing." I soothed myself back to calmness.

"Let her do her thing and don't be overbearing." I repeated that same sentence to myself so many times till I somehow believed it.

I was about to rush out of my office and go search for my mate when my phone started buzzing and then I looked at the screen.

"Crap!" I looked at the door, wanting nothing more than to rush out of my office and go looking for Elena but I also knew I needed to take this call.

"Hello?" I relented and answered the call.

"Bernard!" Alpha Kaba's voice came through the receiver.

"I heard that you refused to die."

"Haha, very funny." He chuckled.

"Come on, you know I am messing with you. How are you doing man?"

Kaba is an Alpha whose Pack wasn't too far from mine. We had become allies recently and had grown to be friends. We don't talk on a day-to-day basis but whenever we do meet up, it is like I am speaking to an old friend.

"I am doing good, man. I thought I would heal in just three days as I usually do when I get injured but I don't know, it was like my wolf was struggling."

"Damn it, I am sorry to hear that. Do you have any idea what might have been used on you?"

"It is wolfsbane, Liam told me that the species of wolfsbane is one of the worst kinds. It is incredibly potent and lethal. If I am not an Alpha, I would have been dead within hours if I got infected."

"Well, at least you are back on your feet again."

"So, tell me, why the sudden call? You don't normally call me unless you have some form of business to discuss." He chuckled.

"You know me well, friend. Well, I wanted to discuss the warriors that my scouts have been seeing circulating between my boundaries and yours." He said and immediately, Elena walked in with a giant smile on her face.

She was wearing a blue sundress that just highlighted her vibrant red hair. When she noticed that I was on call, she slowly started to back out of the room but I signaled her to stay. She closed the door quickly and made her way to my desk. She was about to sit on the opposite side of my desk but I held my hand out to her. I wanted her to be closer than that, she walked up to me cautiously and when she was close enough, I took her hand in mine and pulled her on my lap. She squealed in surprise but she made no move to get up.

"Bernard, are you still there?" Crap, I forget I was on a call.

"Yes, I am here. You were telling me about your scout's discovery?"

"Yes, well I am getting a bit worried because they have been circulating on the boundaries for weeks now and I think they may be after something."

I looked at Elena who was staring at me intently, probably listening to our conversation. I wasn't planning on hiding my conversation with Kaba but I didn't want her to worry about things that were my responsibility.

"Hmmm, how many scouts did you see?"

"Four, they are too organized and meticulous to be rogues. I believe they are trackers from another Pack but I am just not sure whose Pack. I will ask around and see what I find."

"Yes, that sounds good."

"Did you happen to know what they were looking for? Maybe we could aid them in their search instead of wondering the entire time."

I looked at Elena, she was now preoccupied with playing with my fingers but I knew she was still listening. The only reason I knew she was listening was because her body stiffened slightly. I didn't want to hide anything from Kaba, seeing as these wolves could be a possible threat to either of us but I knew I also needed to protect Elena more.

"No clue but I will do some research and see what I come up with."

"Okay, good. Extended my greetings to your parents and Helen." I wanted to correct him about that but I chose to remain silent. He will know in due time.

"Bye." I hung up the phone and threw it onto the desk.

My arms circled Elena's waist and I breathed in her scent greedily. Her body relaxed against mine and we stayed like that for a little while.

"You are late," I finally spoke after some silence.

"I know I am a little but, I helped Veronica. The chef didn't come to work today and she was short-staffed. I helped her during the lunch rush and on my way back home, I had a little run-in with some boys who were bullying this girl for being a gamma."

Well, that doesn't sound good. What did you do?"

"I intervened and one of the boys got mad. He said l was a good-for-nothing gamma, little did he know I am his Luna. This is exactly what I was saying, Bern. The gammas in your Pack are treated so horribly and it starts at such a young age. Something needs to change and that change needs to start with us. If that little boy had known who I was, he would have behaved differently but that is not how it is supposed to be. Everyone should be treated with respect regardless of their rank."

"I agree with you, my love. I believe that everyone should be treated fairly and we will work on changing that in the Pack." I kissed her temple and pulled her closer.

"I love it when you get all fired up about your Luna duties. It is kind of a turn-on, sweetheart.

"Bern." She slapped my shoulder playfully.

"You can't say things like that."

"Why not? We are the only two people here and it is not a secret how gorgeous you are. I am a man at the end of the day, Elena." She rolled her eyes but I could already see the blush appearing on her cheek.

"So, what else happened today?" She looked away.

"Nothing exciting."

She was hiding something. I had known her so well that whenever she was hiding something or telling a lie, she would always look away and not make eye contact with me.

"Elena, what are you hiding?"

"Hiding? Me? I am not hiding anything." She fiddled with some of the papers on my desk. I squeezed her waist causing her to jump slightly.

"Yes, you are. Now tell me what happened?" She sighed and turned to me.

"I will tell you but you have to promise me that you won't get mad."

"I can't promise that but I will try my best not to get mad." She looked unsure for a moment but then decided to speak anyway.

"I had a little run-in with Nicholas, I wanted to see if we could bury the hatchet but he wanted none of that. He made it known to me that he disliked me."

"What did he say?" My voice came out calmer than I felt at that moment and she shrugged.

"Nothing too bad. When did you put the Alpha's protection on me?"

"You refused to stay here with me, I needed to make sure that no one touches you. Now you are digressing, I know Nicholas said something, otherwise you wouldn't have that look on your face."

"What look?" I pointed at her face.

"You look like someone kicked your dog or something. What did he say or do? I promise I won't overreact."

"He told me that if it weren't for the Alpha protection, he would have killed me a while ago." I was silent for a moment.

The slow, simmering anger that had been there before was now rising to dangerous heights and I could feel my wolf peeking through.

"I am going to make him pay." I growled.

He looked so calm, cool, and collected but he had threatened my mate. It was a line only few would cross and if someone did, it would be the last thing they would do."
