Chapter 190: Last Battle

Chapter 190: Last Battle

Bernard

I wasn't about to let Matthew get anywhere near Elena. She had almost died by Nicholas's hands and now Matthew is here to finish the job. It wasn't going to end up like that, no, I wouldn't allow it to. I press my thumb into the wrinkle of Elena's brow and ease it out, I won't let her worry.

"I got this, stay here and be safe."

"But……" I shook my head to end her sentence.

No buts, I will take care of him."

I will kill him before he has a chance to get to her. As I stood, my body thrummed with the need for war.

"Liam, take care of her. Watch your back and get the nurses to safety."

"Of course, Alpha." He bowed his head and I sprinted out of the hospital. I got a hold of Jasper on my way.

"Yes, Alpha?" He said as he picked up the call.

"Matthew is close to the town, get any warrior you can. This ends today."

I hung up the call before he could get any chance to respond. I pivoted around the corner of one of the buildings and continued through the street. Matthew's scent is close by, I can feel the pressure in my very body. I needed to hurry before he had time to harm anyone again.

It took some time but when I found him, he was on the very edge of town, dispatching some more guards as a horde of his followers stood behind him. He had already shifted, his large form looming over the fallen bodies of my Pack members. The rage that coursed through my veins and ratted me to my very core was strong. I lunged through the air and my body shifted mid-air. As I landed on my paws, Jasper and the group of my warriors slid behind me. There was an echo of anger that bounded off the town's walls in an overwhelming growl. It vibrated through my body and enhanced my need to strike out at the enemy.

"There you are." Matthew said lazily and licked his chops and smirked with his wolfish teeth.

"I have been looking for you, they didn't want to tell me where you were." He tsked as he used one furred leg to kick out one of the dead bodies.

"I am right here."

I have to stay calm, I can't let him get inside my head. If I lost it now, it would give him an opening. I needed to be able to watch his every move and anticipate his attacks. His grin widened, and his canines dropped with blood.

"Good."

And like that, chaos ensued. It was a flurry of blood and fur had the stench of death. I barreled right into Matthew, my teeth caught on his shoulder and I dug in as deep as I could. He howled before he whipped around and slashed at my side. I barely had time to bounce away before he went on me again, raining attack after attack down on me. I growled and pushed away, distancing myself from him. He laughed as he ran after me and we bounced around, dodging each other's attacks.

We continue this charade for a while, both of us staying out of the cross-hair of the other's jaws or claws. It wasn't until Matthew misstepped and tripped, fumbling that I was able to whip around and latch onto the back of his neck. I sank my canines in, the burst of metallic, hot liquid burning my mouth.

Jasper and the others were slowly taking down the others in the Pack. Several lay unmoving on the ground nearby while others watched my attacks on Matthew begin to falter. He was not going to get Elena.

I had to do something, I knew that I wasn't healed enough and that Bernard wanted to do everything on his own but I wanted to help. I had to fight to protect the Pack as much as the others were doing. Matthew is here for me, not anyone else.

When Liam wasn't looking, I slipped my legs over the side of the bed, biting back the groan of agony from my ribs as I stepped off the bed. The pain blurred my vision and had my entire body trembling. My legs buckled and I fell back against the bed, a breath escaping my throat with a squeak.

"What are you doing, Elena?" Liam ran into the room and stopped in front of me, his hands up.

"Where do you think you are going?"

"I need to help them." I tried to act tough but my voice was weak as I fought off the pain. Liam shook his head and eased me back on the bed.

"No, what you need to do now is relax and heal. What good do you think you could do out there? You would end up getting in the way and Bernard would have to constantly watch out for you. Do you want that?"

Of course not, I wanted Bernard focused and safe but how could I sit back and not do anything when he is out there right now, possibly on the verge of dying?

"Liam, I need to at least make sure that he is okay."

"Elena, he only just left. Don't worry about him right now. You need to worry about yourself and make sure you are healing. Bernard will whoop my ass if he comes back and you are not on the bed."

"But……"

"Luna, please listen to me." He refused to budge and how could I argue against his reasoning when deep down I knew that I wouldn't be of any use. I would only get in the way and Bernard could potentially be injured because of me.

If that happened, I could never forgive myself. Matthew would win and I would end up killed by him right after. No, Liam was right, with this useless body, it is best to simply lay in bed and wait for Bernard to return, no matter how difficult that was.

****Bernard pov.*****

Matthew came down hard, his body slammed against the earth and his jaw clacked as he bounced up and down once. He didn't make a sound and didn't even protest as I dug my claws into his neck and ripped. I shredded his hide, his fur flying in all directions.

Jasper hooted as he took down another wolf right before one gave up, returning to human form before he put his hands up in the air. It wasn't long until those who had arrived with Matthew had been taken care of. They had followed Matthew even if he had used force, they didn't want to stand up against him and in turn, must face the consequences of their actions.

I tore at Matthew's body, my claws digging down into his very bones, my teeth cracking his neck. He soon stopped making any sort of nose and I continued to go. I could only think of Elena and what she had gone through at the hands of him and Richard. She had almost died but never again. I will always protect her.

After a minute, as I huffed with the exhaustion, I backed off the body and slowly began to shift back. My hands and mouth were coated in the thick sludge of blood and it ran down my chin and chest. It is all I could smell, taste and feel. It was all there was in the world at that moment.

I stood over Matthew's limp form, his eyes wide and dull, it was over. Finally, members of his Pack had either followed him to the grave or surrendered. I wasn't sure what to do with them but incarcerated them. For now, was the best option, I couldn't trust their loyalties even if Matthew ruled by fear. Who knew if one of them would turn on us next.

"Alpha," Jasper was by my side in a heartbeat.

"What do you want to do next?"

I knew what had to be done for my pack and Elena's. We had to decide once and for all who was going to take over the pack. I didn't want my mate to leave and I didn't want to force anyone out of their homes. I had to see for myself if what Liam had mentioned about Elena's family was true. I had to find out for myself.

"Put them on hold for now, we have to go to their Pack and figure something out." I nodded towards the wolves to shift back into human form, tied up on the ground with their face down.

"What do we have to do there?" Jasper asked after he gave the orders to the warriors and turned back to me.

"Who has to figure out who will take over as the Alpha there." I replied.
