Chapter 53: Elite Of The Elite

Chapter fifty-three: Elite Of The Elite

Elena

My mind was racing as I approached Bernard's house. I had been trying so desperately to keep everything together, I hated feeling like this but somehow it always recurs when Bernard is involved. Ivory came to the bakery to warn me off Bernard like she was his property. I am feeling a different array of emotions that I am not sure exactly how to process. I was angry at the fact that she would try and stake a claim on the man that belonged to me, I was upset at the fact that she had gone and seen Bernard.

Bernard might have told her that I am very important to him but he hadn't told her that I am his mate. I understood that we still needed to play this charade a little longer while he sorted things out but it was becoming a torture for me. I am suffering and I couldn't do a damn about it. I wiped away my tears angrily and continued walking until I entered the Packhouse. I felt people staring at me as I walked towards the main area. I didn't mean to become such a spectacular here but it had just happened. On second thought, what had I expected to happen? I am a rogue who had suddenly won the favour of an Alpha. That was just something that never happened in my world, rogues were seen as an outcast and criminals. If one ever crossed into another Pack, they were immediately executed or taken as a prisoner.

"That is her." I heard a voice whisper as I made my way past the first building in the compound. I needed to see the face of that one person who would make all this alright.

I walked up to Bernard's house and as usual, the guards let me pass without any hassle. I saw the sleek black car that he came to the bakery with parked in the parking lobby. Then I knew that he was at home, it was time for me to sort everything out. I walked up to the front door and turned the doorknob but it was locked, that was strange. From what I had gathered, Bernard never keeps his door locked. I knocked on the door and waited for a response but no one came.

"Bernard, are you in there? We need to talk." I knocked again and yet no response.

I was about to turn to go and try the back door when I heard the keys twist in the keyhole. The door opened and a familiar pair of forest green eyes stared at me but they weren't the ones that made my heart pound like crazy.

"Mrs. Elizabeth." I greeted Bernard's mother.

Elizabeth Joseph was what you expect any rich Alpha class woman to look like. Expensive jewelry adorns his ears, neck, and wrist. Her hair was styled into a stylish up-do. She wore a close cut dress that fit her body perfectly. Even from where I was standing, I could smell her expensive perfume. She truly looks like the wife of an Alpha. This is what my future would look like, I will need to play this role and this look as well.

"Who are you?" She spat and I gulped.

"Hmmm, you have met me before Mrs. Elizabeth." I muttered but she just blinked.

"I am the girl who had been in Helen's room before you told me to move downstairs." She crossed her arms over her chest and glared at me.

This is not going well, so much for the second impression. I wasn't making a good impact on my would-be mother-in-law and I needed to fix that somehow before I became her enemy.

"And what do you want? I was told that you would no longer be staying here." I nodded.

"Yes, I moved out into the gamma's house not too far from here. I wanted to gain some independence and I didn't want to mooch off Bernard."

"Alpha." She corrected me immediately.

"Yes, forgive me, I mean to say Alpha Bernard. I am doing well and I found a job at the local bakery which was run by Veronica. I am sure you have met her before, everyone in the Pack seems to know her." She didn't seem amused at all.

This woman is one hard person to crack. I wanted her to like me because I knew she was important to Bernard and therefore, she is also important to me. If she disliked me, that would only add to the list of problems Bernard and I already had. We stood in award silence for a moment, she continued to glare at me like I was the lowest of the lowest scum. As far as I knew, I had never done anything to offend her but she was treating me like I had wronged her for some reason and I didn't like that.

"I need to talk to Bernard, please." She scoffed.

"How many times do I need to correct you, girl? You shall not address my son by his name. You are not his family, friend nor are you his mate." She coated the word mate in so much venom and I could taste the bitterness in my mouth.

"My apologies, Mrs. Elizabeth." I apologized.

"Don't let it happen again. As for my son, he is not around."

"Where did he go?" I asked and she cocked an eyebrow at me.

"Not that it is any of your business but he is with his mate right now." I felt my heart sink to the floor because of what she said. I am his mate, not her, I am his one and only true mate. Disappointment filled my heart at her words, I told him that we would talk after my shift was over and he had run to Helen instead of waiting for me.

"If you don't mind me asking, where did they go?" A smile crept on her face.

"They are doing wedding preparation. We have decided to skip all of the engagement festivities and move straight to the wedding. I think they went to do cake testing." I felt my heart begin to crack. Each word of hers was like a whip right against the soft muscles of my heart. They were planning their wedding now?

"But his car is in the parking lobby, Mrs. Elizabeth." She waved me off.

"I know it may be a strange reality for you to fathom but some people have more than one car. It is unfortunate that you grew up in poverty and were never used to such notions. After all, the life of a rogue is never easy." I felt like my heart wanted to explode. I was trying my best to gather myself, my emotions felt like they wanted to spill over. I had a full pot that had been placed on a hot plate since this morning.

"She will make such a beautiful Luna, won't she? She comes from such a good home and understands the way of life for an Alpha. She is dependable, strong and so well-mannered. Elegance is something that is a must for any Luna and I believe that Helen pulls it off seamlessly and effortlessly. A good mother could ask for no better match than the one in which I got for my son." Her words were like daggers stabbed straight through my heart. I longed for her to look at me through those rose colored eyes the same way she was looking at Helen.

I knew historically that the relationship between a mother-in-law and daughter-in-law was never smooth but even before getting the chance to show her who I am, she had already decided.

"My son isn't home, if you wish to speak with him, you will have to wait for him to return with Helen and I can't tell how long they would take. You know lovebirds, they could just sneak away for a little alone time." I felt like I was going to throw up.

"I see it in your eyes, girl." She stepped onto the porch where I was standing.

"You feel something for my son but I am here to tell you that whatever you feel is pointless. My son would never marry a woman like you nor would he even consider you. He had an Alpha's blood running through his veins and you are nothing but an obsolete, replaceable rogue."

"Mrs. Elizabeth, I……" My voice trailed off when I saw the look on her face.

"Do you think women like you haven't tried before? Trying to warm your way up the social status ladder, trying to claw your way out of the dirty pit you belonged to? My son is the elite of the elite so make no mistake, little girl. It would have to be over my dead body, will you end up with my son" By the time she had finished speaking, she was already in front of me seething with anger. Her face had taken on a red tint and her forest green eyes had darkened with rage.

"Now leave, your presence is stinking up the atmosphere." I turned away from her and took off running. I felt the tears flowing down my face and I didn't bother to brush them away. Her words had been filled with so much hatred I couldn't take.

It was a combination of a lot of things in one and everything boiled down to one specific thing or rather a person which is Bernard. I hated that I always had to be on this roller coaster with him all the time. I wanted us to be stable for once.

I let out a little broken sob as I made my way back to the safety of my room. I was done with today already and it was only just past one o'clock in the afternoon.
