Chapter 117: Destiny Will Not Bend

Chapter 117: Destiny Will Not Bend

Richard

We had set up camp a few miles away from Bernard's territory. I was even shocked that I was able to accomplish this in such a short time.

"Alpha," Matthew entered my tent.

"We saw the scouts leaving the tree line, they should be reporting back to Bernard within an hour."

"Good, so they know we are coming now?"

I wanted Bernard to know that I was coming for him, I wanted him to know that I was infiltrating his land. I leaned over my table that had a layout of Bernard's land. I had been studying this map for the past days trying to find a weak spot within his defense but I hadn't found one yet. The bastard had created a fortress.

Luckily, that useless fool of a wolf, Nicholas had managed to send the schedule of the patrol officers beforehand but seeing as he was imprisoned now, I don't know if Bernard had decided to change his patrol routes or not. Any sensible Alpha would have changed the routes but I knew that he was not a man of sense. He is a strange man who often runs on emotions more than logic.

"Alpha, may I speak?" I gestured to him to go ahead without removing my face from the map.

"Why did you want Bernard to know of our arrival? Was it not better to surprise him? This way we would have the upper hand." I looked at Matthew.

"We don't know what his line of defense looks like. If he is to know of our arrival, it means he will concentrate his warriors to one point where we shall enter. The men Ronald sent will attack them from behind." He nodded.

"But how can you be sure that he will not have wolves in all the surrounding areas of the territory? Bernard had us outnumbered in terms of Pack size."

My jaws locked in place as the irritation in me began to grow. My wolf felt as though he was trying to challenge us.

"Are you questioning my leadership, Mathew?" I stood to my full height, easily towering over him and his eyes went wide for a moment.

"No, Alpha. You are a marvelous and fearless leader."

"Flattery will get nowhere, Matthew. Next time just keep your comments and questions to yourself."

"Yes, Alpha."

I turned my attention back to the map, searching for any kind of weak point in the damn fortress. I had to think quickly or I would lose my window of opportunity.

"How many of Ronald's men came with us?"

"Thirty-five, Alpha, many of which were gammas."

"Damn it," I cursed.

I needed more men and I was running out of time, I needed to work with what I had and what I have was not much. I am always level-headed, I never panicked and this situation was no different. I had worked very hard to get to the point I am currently at, no one and nothing would take away what I had built.

Elena would be mine and I will take Bernard's land after I slaughtered his entire Pack. This is my birthright, my ancestors had set the foundation for the empire I was about to build. I am meant to be the king and it all started today.

"Bring my head doctor." I ordered.

"Yes, Alpha."

I moved to the small tray that held my liquor and poured myself something stiff. I had done my research and I knew what I needed to do but something was gnawing at me and I couldn't quite figure out what it was.

Was it anxiety? No, I am not a man who was moved easily. I brought my glass to my lips and sipped from it. The poison traveled down my throat smoothly, I gulped the remainder and poured another glass.

"You called me, Alpha," my head doctor entered my tent.

He wore his traditional healer's cloak, many doctors in the modern era chose to forget the ancient attire but Jeff was not the typical doctor. He dabbled in areas many others feared to go. He was fearless, ambitious, and ruthless, just like the kind of man I needed within my circle. He knew what it took to come out on top.

"I need you to talk me through everything I need to do." I sipped on my liquor.

"I have no room for mistakes, the steps will be pivotal in coming out on top today."

He moved the hood of his cloak and looked at me, his haunting violet eyes stared at me.

"Before we set out, you must rub the elixir on your fangs." I nodded.

"And how can I trust that this elixir will do its job right? What if she fights it?"

"She is not a fully realized Alpha, the elixir should be enough to immobile her. Once you are able to do so, then you will be free to mark her."

As far as I knew, Elena knew nothing about her ancestry. I would use that to my advantage, as long as she had not yet become a fully realized Alpha. Then her power would be mine for the taking.

"But, I must warn you, Alpha." He stepped up to the table that had the map laid out on it.

"If you strike too deep, you run the risk of killing her. If you don't go deep enough, the protection of her mark could kill you. You must be very precise in how you choose to approach this." My eyes narrowed at him.

"Kill me? You never told me of this beforehand."

"I told you that what you were trying to do was very dangerous. I told you that lives could be lost."

"Not mine," I spat.

"You said that it could kill Bernard, not me. How could you fail to mention that it would also kill me, Jeff?"

He was unfazed by my growing anger, he was one of the two people who seemed bothered by my temper. This first was my father, Jeff was either foolish, brave, or both to not fear me.

"Alpha, you know the danger of what you are trying to do. Your ancestors took the gene by force, it doesn't belong to your bloodline. Everything comes at a cost and the greater the reward, the higher the cost. You are trying to remove the mark of a fated one…." With each word he uttered, my temper grew.

"A fated mate is one of the most sacred things the moon goddess offers to her children and you are choosing to tamper with it. You are tainting one of our most sacred practices, it will come at a very high cost. Lives will be lost when you try to execute your plan, whether it will be your life, I am not sure."

My grip on my glass tightened until it shattered in my hands. I felt the sting of glass piercing through my skin but I didn't even flinch.

"My bloodline is the only bloodline fit to rule. My ancestors saw that and decided to take fate into their own hands. Who is the moon goddess to choose who is fit to lead and who isn't? All she had ever done was choose weaklings to take the lead when they were brave and able men who would do the job much better. The Alpha gene should be earned and not gifted."

Jeff is the only one who knew of the true history of my family. I didn't want anyone else trying to challenge me for my position. I am the Alpha of this Pack and I would remain so. Through the law of the land, Elena is the one who heads this Pack because she carries the original ruling gene. Killing her would rid me of her and make the claim null and void but mating with her and taking the original gene from her would add to my powers.

My plans were much bigger than just my Pack, I wanted to rule over all. These wolves had been lost for far too long, they needed guidance, and they needed a true leader. I am to be king and for me to achieve that, I needed all the power and all the land I could garner.

Killing Bernard would ensure I have his land and mating with Elena would give me the power I needed for the next phase of my plan.

"What is the likelihood that I will survive this?"

"Thirty percent, Alpha. Everything may be precise, you must mark her and pierce her skin exactly where her old mark will be, that's why you must immobile her. We cannot use the wolfsbane because it would turn her blood into poison which will kill you. This is why the elixir is important but it can only be used on an omega or a gamma. It cannot be used on an Alpha." That's not a problem, she hasn't activated her Alpha gene.

"I am to be kind, Jeff." He looked down at the expanse of the map.

"It is my destiny and it all starts today." He didn't say a word.

"Tell Matthew to read the men. No more planning or processing things. We are going straight through Bernard's front door."

"Yes, Alpha." He turned to leave but stopped when he got to the exit of my tent.

"Alpha, if I may?"

"Speak!"

"Destiny will not bend to those who force it." With that he left.

I don't know exactly what he meant by that but I knew there was some hidden meaning behind his words. Jeff always spoke in riddles and half sentences.

It didn't matter though, I knew how I was and what I needed to do. Today is the beginning of what would be a new world order.
