Chapter 43: Man Of Probabilities
Chapter forty-three: Man Of Probabilities
Nicholas
"Nicholas!" I heard someone call my name. I turned and saw Jasper, an omega approaching me. He had a look of worry on his face.
Very few people address me by my name and I couldn't count them on one hand. Bernard and Liam, even then I loathed it. Bernard, I could understand because as for now, he outranked me but Liam is simply a doctor. Yet he still took it upon himself to make us equals.
"You will address me as Beta, Omega." I cautioned him.
Jasper, unlike the rest of the Pack, did not fear me. He is one of the odd few that loved Bernard and that is why he felt so empowered to show blatant disrespect my way.
"What are you doing to them?" He gestured to the warriors I had been training.
One of the warriors was currently doubled over behind a tree throwing up whatever little contents of breakfast they consumed.
"What does it look like I am doing? I am planting roses in a rose garden." I deadpanned.
"I am training my warriors." I added.
"But, Bernard isn't here and you know he likes to train them himself. You can't overstep his rules, Nicholas." I narrowed my eyes on him.
"Don't test me, Omega. Learn your place. Bernard is out of commission for the time being so I have taken over as the leader of this Pack." I responded.
"On whose order?" He encountered.
"Mine." I growled.
"Do you have a problem with that, Omega?" He tried to put on a brave face but I saw the way he flinched. Smart man, he knew when to be afraid, he didn't need to be playing in water he did not understand.
"Until Bernard is back on his feet, I will be the integral Alpha of this Pack. As Beta by law, I am within my right to assume this role."
"But, Bernard is awake now." He muttered.
"Is he here?" I sneered.
"No, he is not. He is incapable of fulfilling his Alpha's duties and so I will take over for the time being. If you keep challenging me, Jasper, I will have you thrown into the hold for your insolence." I tried to threaten him.
"You don't have the authority." He was trying to be brave but I could hear the hesitation in his voice. He knew he could not come up against me.
"But I do." An evil smile crept onto my lips.
"Now, hurry along, Jasper, before you piss yourself." He turned around and started walking in the direction of the hospital. He is going to tattle me but I don't care. My time as the Alpha would come soon enough, I only needed to be patient.
I still have many loose ends to tie up and one of them is Elena. That girl is hiding something and Bernard knows. I only needed to figure out what our dear old Alpha was hiding and why he was protecting the rogue. I turned to the young warriors.
"That will be all for today, you are dismissed." I turned and made my way to the Packhouse. With Bernard still on the hospital bed, now is the perfect time to search through his office without the risk of him catching me.
I walked into the Packhouse and made a b-line for his office. I walked into the impressive looking office and locked the door behind me. He had a different array of documents spread out on his desk but that is not what I am interested in. I sat on his desk and turned his computer on. His password was easy enough to bypass, I clicked through his files looking for something that would give me any sort of information about the girl.
I am a man of probabilities and Elena was an outlier that I wanted to be removed. She is an unknown piece to my chessboard that I could not control and I didn't like that. I needed more information and I would do anything to retrieve it.
My parents were out of the Pack for the wedding anniversary and I needed access to a private computer that wasn't on the Pack database. My computer was within the database so Bernard would be able to log on to see what I was doing. I needed to use my dad's computer. I walked to my parent's house and opened the door and slammed it shut. I wasn't sure if Doris was at home or not. She usually stayed in her room like the little hermit she was. She barely interacted with people within the pack and when she did, she would only interact with those she was comfortable with.
To say that my sister and I were polar opposites would be an understatement. When I was ambitious and driven, she was more laid back and went with the flow. Where I trained day in and day out to hone my skills, my sister picked up on things quickly. She never needed to put in the extra work unlike some of us. She had a gift that was sitting on and not doing anything about it. It infuriates me a lot.
If my sister had the same mindset as me, I would have included her in my plans. I didn't trust a lot of people and my family was among them. They had been with me through it all but even with my family, I still kept one eye open just in case. We lived in a world where money, power, and greed ruled. No one was immune to it. The humans in us made us ache for more which is why so many were easily won over or swayed.
I walked to my dad's office and went straight for his desk. I needed a detailed list of all the Alphas on the Western coast. I needed to find out where this girl fit into the grander scheme of things. She was the outlier I didn't account for. I am a creature of method and habit, I never made a move without assessing all the probabilities. So when Elena came into the picture and shifted everything, I won't lie and say I wasn't a little thrown. This is why dealing with people irked me. They were too unpredictable for my liking.
I logged into my dad's computer and searched for the details I was looking for. At least here, I would have the freedom to talk, I didn't need to whisper or run the risk of being caught in my own parent's home, especially when they weren't home. I had told no one of my plans, not even my dad. It was a secret I had guarded close to my heart and now that it is slowly coming to fruition and the time of action is soon approaching, I would need to inform him.
Finally, I found the folder that had all the details I was looking for and grabbed my dad's landline, and dialed the very first number at the top. It rang three times before he finally answered.
"Hello." His gruff voice sounded through the receiver end.
"Alpha David, it is Nicholas Mark. The Beta of Crescent Wolf Pack, how are you?"
Yes, I remembered you. I am doing well, my boy. How are you doing? I heard that your Alpha was attacked by some rogues. We hadn't received the full report on his health so we weren't sure if things were okay or had taken a turn for the worse." I intensely cringed at the fact that he called me 'my boy.' Who is he to call me that? The statement was meant to be a term of endearment but it sounded like an insult to my ears. Nevertheless, I sucked it up and rolled with it.
"I am keeping well and yes, Bernard is also doing alright. I was calling because we seem to have stumbled upon a rogue, she goes by the name Elena. She is about five feet tall and has red hair and blue eyes that can only be described as sapphires. Would you happen to be missing a wolf within your Pack by chance?"
"As far as I know, all my members are accounted for. I will just check with my Beta but I don't believe we are missing anyone. Can this girl not remember which Pack she belongs to?" He asked.
"Unfortunately, the girl lost her memory and can't remember anything except her name."
"That is a real shame. I am sorry but I can't help you with this one, Nicholas. Best of luck finding her Pack, it will be like trying to find a needle in a haystack seeing as she can't remember where she is from." He was silent for a moment.
"Yes, it will be a challenge but I am willing to put in the work to help this girl back home. She truly is a sweet little girl, thank you for your help anyway. Please give my regards to your Luna and children."
"I will, bye for now." He hung up.
Damn it, this is really going to be hard but I won't give up.
