Chapter 156: Meddling
Chapter 156: Meddling
Elena
"If I am being honest, something did happen after they came to pick us up that day at your bridal shower." I squealed, jumping up and down.
"I knew it! So tell me, I am dying with suspense."
She bit down on her lips, looking a little nervous. Yes, badass warrior she-wolf Doris looked nervous.
"We kissed, it was a drunken kiss but we did it."
I literally could not control the high pitched scream that escaped from my mouth. But my smile slipped from my face when I noticed that she didn't look happy about her confession.
"What's wrong? Was it not good? Did you not like him?" She shook her head.
"I don't know if I did or didn't. It was just weird, I have known Jasper all my life and I never once saw him like that and now it's just…. weird." My shoulder sagged a bit when I realized what this meant.
There would be no playing cupid for me, it didn't seem like she was into him at all. I had interpreted what I had seen wrong, maybe it was Jasper who likes Doris and she just didn't feel the same. Unrequited love sucked, I was there before.
"I guess I was wrong, I thought that maybe you like him."
"I don't like him, I just….I don't think….I…I don't know."
Out of these few months of knowing Doris, I had never seen her look so stumped and at a loss for words. She looked so conflicted, I also knew a thing or two about feeling like that. Having to decide whether you take the plunge or take the less friction filled road was not easy.
The plunge was risky but worth it, it also gave the greatest reward. The safe path was predictable but it was also filled with a lot of what if, I placed my hand on her shoulder.
"You don't need to have it all figured out, you can just take your emotions day by day."
"I want to like him and not have overthink. I think, plan, and analyze, I don't like uncertain things, I don't like the things I can't figure out and I can't seem to figure out Jasper. I don't know what he is thinking or if he even likes me."
A smile crept onto my face, it looked like cupid was back in business.
"I just need you to take it one step at a time. Don't rush anything and just go with the flow. Everything will fall into place where it is meant to, trust me."
I technically wasn't supposed to meddle but this wasn't meddling, this was me just giving them a gentle nudge in the right direction.
"Come on, let's head back. I am sure they are missing us."
She nodded and headed to the door, I followed closely behind her. My brain was twisting and turning with ideas on how to get these two together. The first stage of my plan was finding out whether Jasper liked her. My plan would be useless otherwise. I was already sure they had some form of a connection with one another. So I was almost one hundred percent sure that the answer to my question would be yes.
As we reached our table, Bernard was looking at me with this face that read 'You are meddling, aren't you?' I simply shrugged at my husband and settled into the seat next to him. I didn't miss the way Jasper's eyes followed Doris until she finally sat down.
The rest of the dinner continued smoothly, there were laughs and a few playful arguments here and there. One thing I did notice was how hyper aware Jasper and Doris were at each other. The bills paid, we all stood and headed out of the restaurant, everyone turned to one another ready to say goodbye but I wasn't ready to let this night end yet. I still had a mission that I wanted to complete.
"How about you guys come over for a little while? It has been a long time since I saw the two of you and the night is still young."
Doris looked like she wanted to protect but Jasper intervened before she could say anything.
"We would love to, Luna. Besides, your husband owes me a round of pool." Great.
"I will ride with you guys then, I didn't drive." Doris muttered.
"And leave Jasper on his own? Nonsense, why don't you follow us in Jasper's car?"
From the look on her face, I knew I was in trouble. She looked like she was ready to bury me six feet under. But she would thank me for this later, I am sure of it. I grabbed Bernard's hand and started walking towards our car.
"Elena," my husband called in the tone that I knew all too well, he was going to scold me.
"I knew you said that I shouldn't do anything but I just wanted to help our friends find what we have. Wouldn't we want them to feel the kind of love we shared?" He placed his hand on my hips.
"What we have is one in a million, Elena. Not everyone will get the chance to feel it, we were one of the lucky few who were blessed to have it. I know you are trying to help but let things happen naturally between them. If it happens then it happens but if it doesn't, that is okay too."
"But I just want to know if Jasper likes Doris, that's all."
"He does."
It took me a moment to register what he just said but once it had clicked, I let out the loudest shrill. I jumped into my husband's arms like he had just told me that poverty had been eradicated. He rolled his eyes at my antics when I pulled away.
"He told you that?" He nodded.
"You got me curious and I had to ask."
"What happened to no meddling?" I teased.
"I wasn't meddling, I was only inquiring." I scoffed.
"Admit it, Bernard, you want them together just as much as l do, right? Look at Jack and Alisha, they are so in love and happy. Don't you want one of your best friends to be happy?"
"I do but only if it is what he wants, we can't interfere, Elena."
"Fine, I won't meddle but if I see a little nudge is needed, I will gladly help someone."
"You are such a little kid sometimes."
"And I think that is why you love me so much." I pulled out from his hold and grabbed his arms.
"Come on, let's go home." He allowed him to pull him down the pavement towards the car.
As we got back home, we all played a round of pool. I sucked but everyone else did well, ultimately Bern won much to Jasper's dismay but they all had fun. I even caught Jasper and Doris flirting from time to time. I had never seen her blush before until Jasper winked at her. It was one of the cutest things I had ever seen. When everyone was tired and ready for bed, Jasper took Doris back home.
I closed the door after they left and turned to face my husband who was leaning against the wall staring at me. He had this look in his eyes that had my chest rising and falling.
"What?"
"You are just so beautiful, I have to stop and remind myself that you are mine and I get to love you in this life and the next.
I walked up to him and circled my arms around his neck, we stood there staring at each other, completely absorbed with one another. These were the moments I loved the most, there was no title or Pack looking at us. It was just the both of us, just like the cabin.
"Tonight was perfect," I murmured.
"Thank you." He lowered his head and captured my lips in his. The electricity that ran through my veins awakened every nerve in my body. He pulled away and leaned his forehead against mine.
"You are most welcome, my love. Now that we are alone….."
He pulled away from me and in one fluid motion, he lifted me into his arms, I squeaked holding onto him tighter. He started heading towards the stairs and he was staring at me with a look that told me exactly where his mind was, my heart fluttering at the thought of us having sex.
I rested my head in the crock of his neck and all I could think was how perfect everything was. The Pack is finally at peace, Bernard and I were seeing eye to eye and our bond just kept getting better as time moved on. I am happy and for once in my life, I felt like this feeling would be long-term.
