Chapter 129: After Effects
Chapter 129: After Effects
Elena
After we left Ivory's room, we made our way downstairs to the casualties. The most noticeable thing was the tense atmosphere in the air. The casualties floor was split into two, one side containing Richard's wolves whom we had taken to our side and the other containing Alpha Kaba's wolves.
When we arrived, we saw Alpha Kaba and Marcus by the reception area talking to each other. It looked like they were in some kind of intense argument. They turned around facing us when they saw us approaching.
"Bernard, Elena, it is good to see that you are both well. Liam told me that you two were on the ICU floor." Bernard nodded.
"We thought we would attend to our most critical ones. What has been happening here?"
I didn't need to be told what was happening here because I could see it myself. The doctors who were attending to Richard's wolves looked like they wanted to murder them.
"There is a lot of tension, I have done my best to calm the issues but our people are angry. I don't think it was wise to bring these wolves here to seek treatment, they are Richard's wolves."
"And so am I, does that mean that I don't belong here, either?" Kaba snapped his eyes to me.
"But you are different, Elena. You are mated to Bernard, you are the Luna of the Crescent Wolf Pack."
"And I also happen to be the true Alpha of the Silver Crest Pack. So, my point still stands, Alpha Kaba. Since I am from the Richard's Pack, should I also be removed and placed into the cells?"
"You did not kill wolves, my warriors nor Bernard's. You didn't make the children orphan."
"They were under the orders of a tyrant. They had no choice but to do as they were told or risk death, they were simply following orders and my bringing them here was to offer them freedom."
"Well, my Pack do not want freedom, they want justice for their dead."
I stepped up to Alpha Kaba, he was a good head taller than I was but I didn't back down. I was trying to fight for the people I had chosen to keep within enemy lines. Much like with Richard, I had given them no choice about whether or not they were to stay here. But after they were healed, I would give them the option.
"Justice was served, I killed the man who started this all."
"But the one who killed my warriors still lives." He huffed.
"As long as they live, then justice has not been truly served in my eyes."
"That's enough," Bernard muttered.
"I think we all just need to take a little breather, Kaba you and Marcus should go to the head doctor's ground office. Elena and I will meet you there once we have met with the doctors on duty."
Alpha Kaba huffed and walked away followed by Marcus. I was not oblivious to the stares that I got from Marcus. He was looking at me like he was searching for something but I wasn't sure exactly what it was. I made a mental note to ask him later.
"Come on," I said to Bernard, I walked over to the first bed and spoke to the first casualty.
"Luna," she tried to sit up but the splint on her legs prevented her movement. I placed my hand on her shoulder and gently pushed her back.
"Please rest," I smiled gently at her.
"How are you feeling today?"
"I am doing well, Luna, better than my brother." She choked out the last part.
"Where is your brother?" With teary eyes, she stared at me.
"He is dead, that wolf over there killed him."
She pointed her hand to one of Richard's wolves who was getting treated for a head injury on the other side of the room. I could see the pain and hatred in her eyes. Hatred was like a slow-growing cancer, if left untreated, it would spread until you were completely engulfed in it and your soul sucked from you. It was far more poisonous than wolfsbane.
"I am so sorry for your loss."
"If you were really sorry, you would allow me to kill him."
She tried to jump from her bed but I held her back. She was hysterical at this point and I was struggling to calm her down.
"I am going to kill you, monster!" She thrashed around with tears streaming down her face.
"I am going to make Richard look like an angel when I am done with you. I will make sure you beg for death because that would be a mercy."
Bernard walked up to my side, grabbed her hand, and looked at her as she thrashed. His green eyes began to glow, she stilled and her eyes snapped to Bernard. Her brown eyes turned a luminescent amber as they both stared at each other.
"Rest," Bernard whispered.
She closed her eyes and fell back onto the pillow. Bernard released his hand from the side of her face and his eyes stopped glowing. He turned to look at me with a look of concern on his face.
"Are you okay?" I nodded, still a little bit shocked.
"What did you do to her?"
"I just put her to sleep for a while, I calmed her mind."
"How did you do that?"
"It is a skill my mother taught me."
He turned around and everyone's eyes were focused on us.
"Let us go." He leaned down and whispered into my ear, the nurses will take care of them. We walked to meet Alpha Kaba and Marcus.
"You see?" Kaba fumed.
"That is only just a fraction of the frustration that the rest of the warriors from our Pack are showing. They demand justice for the blood that was spilled."
"Kaba, I am going to need you to calm down, we will sort all of this out."
"The only way we can sort things out is if those people are executed for their crimes. They do not deserve to walk in this after they killed my top captain!"
"But that is war, Kaba. I understand that you were close to Fred but we all knew what we were signing up for when we said we would stand to fight Richard. Those wolves from Richard's Pack are not the enemy, they are Elena's people and as such, they are my protection."
Kaba looked like he wanted to say something but he kept his mouth shut. He knew that Bernard was right, I didn't like the fact that people had been killed on both sides. Not only had our wolves lost loved ones but the wolves from Richard's well I should say my Pack had also lost people they cared for.
"Listen, Kaba, I understand your frustrations and your anger. But these are my people and if you are to harm them, then you harmed me. They never had a choice in regards to fighting for Richard, it was either fight for him or die, there was no in-between."
I walked up to Kaba and took his both hands into mine, I stared into his eyes and I could see the pain swimming behind them.
"I am so sorry for your loss, I never knew your captain but I am sure Fred was a good man. But there will be no more bloodshed, it is time we entered into a new era of peace. My people deserve a chance at normalcy, they deserve a chance to be a part of a free and fair Pack that feels like a home."
He stared at me for a moment before his shoulder sagged and he nodded his head. I knew it was not easy for him because the first instinct for any Alpha is to protect and avenge those who needed to but he knew that this was the best way to go for it.
"Thank you," I dropped his hand and looked at Marcus.
"We will hold a mass funeral tomorrow morning for all our dead. I am sure you would like to hold your own in your homeland, Bernard and I have already discussed and we will help you transport them back to your Pack whenever you are ready to leave."
"Thank you, Elena." He was still staring at me with this strange look in his eyes.
"Marcus, have I offended you in any way?"
"No, why do you ask?"
"You keep looking at me strangely."
"You activated your Alpha gene, correct?" I nodded and he smiled.
"I see the aura around you, your ancestors were powerful people. You will be a good Alpha and Luna, Elena. May the moon goddess bless you abundantly."
"Thank you, Marcus." I turned to face Bernard.
"We should probably get Jasper so we can start the arrangements for the funeral. I don't think now is the time to meet with casualties."
"I agree with you, my love. We will wait until things have calmed a little."
Bernard walked up to Kaba and enveloped him in a hug. I could tell he was struggling with his own grief and I could only hope that it would ease soon.
