Chapter 56: Misunderstanding
Chapter fifty-six: Misunderstanding
Bernard
The next morning, I was in the kitchen brewing myself a cup of coffee when Liam walked in. I really need to lock my front door. People walked in and out of my house like they owned it.
"Good morning." He bowed, causing me to groan.
"Aren't you just a ray of sunshine this morning? What has gotten you moody? Is it Elena, does she have your panties in a twist?" He joked and when he noticed that I wasn't joining in his laughter, he stopped. He came to where I stood and tapped my shoulder.
"What is going on Bern?" I shook my head.
"It doesn't matter, you can't fix it anyway." I grabbed my coffee cup and moved to the fridge to get some milk. I was never a fan of coffee but today, I felt like I needed the extra kick. The night had been anything but restful and my mind and heart were still burdened.
"Bern, come on, we are brothers. We tell each other everything, we made a covenant when we were eight years old that no matter what, we would be there for each other through thick and thin. Forever and always, remember?" I nodded.
"Yes, I do." I responded.
"So, then?" I sighed.
"It is over between me and Elena."
"What?" He asked in surprise.
"What happened? Yesterday you were head over heels in love with the girl. You were ready to marry her, so what had happened." He asked.
Yes, I was and to be honest, I am still very much in love with her but she wasn't mine to have.

Liam Pov.
I stared at Bernard in complete shock, this didn't make sense at all. I spoke to Elena a few days ago, she told me everything. She told me that she was going to fight for her love. What happened between then and now?
"Are you sure, because that doesn't sound like Elena, Bernard."
"I heard it from a reliable source." He replied.
Well, that source was full of crap because there is no way Elena would date Jack Morgan of all people. Although I didn't know him too well, I am sure he was not a bad guy but he is just not the guy for Elena. She has a mate which is Bernard.
"Who is your reliable source? You can't just trust people's word, especially in touchy matters such as this. What if this person has it out for Elena?" He spun around and faced me.
"It was my mother, Liam. I know she doesn't like Elena but this is different. She knows how important Elena is to me and she knows that hearing something like this would hurt me. So why would my mother purposefully hurt me?"
"I don't know, maybe she wanted to push you closer to Helen. Elena had been the hindrance so it only makes sense why she would come up with a lie." He let out a low growl.
"My mother wouldn't lie to me, Liam. I know her, no matter how badly she would want me to marry Helen, she would never hurt me like that." He had a point but something just wasn't adding up here.
"I know your mother would never want to hurt you, Elizabeth would sacrifice herself just to keep a smile on your face but it also doesn't make sense what she had said. I spoke to Elena a few days ago and she was ready to go all-in for you, man. There is no way she would want to throw away what you guys have just like that for a man she just met a few minutes ago." He pinched the bridge of his nose. He was frustrated and I could see that some colours had drained from his face. He is still healing and putting him into a foul mood would not help the healing process.
"Did you sleep well last night? You have bags under your eyes and your face is pale as snow." He shook his head.
"I woke up around two in the morning and just couldn't sleep anymore. I need to rest again and I will be fine."
"Well, putting yourself into bad moods like this won't help your healing." I tapped his shoulder.
"We will continue this conversation later brother but I am telling you that Elena would never do such a thing to you. You also know that something is not adding up with this whole story."
"But I saw them at the bakery, Liam. He was writing his number down on her hand. He was hitting on her, not to mention how many times she tried to escape and leave this place. She doesn't want to be with me, I come with many complications and too much baggage. Jack Morgan is simple and easy." He said.
"But he is not you, Bernard. Come on, you know Elena, you know how much you mean to her. She would never hurt you like this." He sighed, turning to the window.
"I don't know, Liam. I am just tired and I need to focus on healing right now. I don't want to talk about this any further, Elena has made her choice and I need to fulfill the commitments that have been laid out for me."
"You can't be serious, do you want to marry Helen over some misunderstanding? Listen, you are angry now and filled with a lot of emotions, don't make a drastic decision to marry Helen yet, let me get to the bottom of this first. I know there is more to this story." He nodded and continued to drink his coffee.
I left him without saying another word. I needed to find Elena, there is more to this story. I knew Elena would be at the bakery because she needed to help Veronica make the fresh goods for the day. I got into my car and went to the bakery. I knew Elizabeth would never want to purposefully hurt her son but she is a woman who valued duty and honor more than anything. If choosing Elena meant that Bernard would not fulfill his duties or he may lose some of his honor, she would definitely interfere. Elena is a rogue who carries no land, no title, and no power but Helen has the Alpha gene in her blood. She carried a lot of powers and an ample amount of land so it was easy to see who Elizabeth wanted Bernard to end up with.
I got to the bakery quicker than I had anticipated, I didn't waste any time as I entered the bakery. I found Elena behind the counter, her back was turned to me and she didn't see me enter.
"Elena?" I called her, and she turned around and faced me. My steps faltered when I saw her face. Her eyes were red and puffy, the usual light that was behind her eyes was dimmed. Her cheeks and nose were red most probably from crying. She looked like a wounded puppy. I wanted nothing more than to take her into my arms and make everything better for her.
"Hey, Liam." Her voice was tender and I could tell that she had been crying not too long ago.
What the hell happened? They were both smiling and happy a few days ago and now they both looked miserable.
"Hi," I walked up to the counter.
"What can I get for you?" She asked.
"I am not here to order, Elena. I am here to talk to you." Her back stiffened.
"If you are here to talk about him, you can save it. I don't want to hear it, he has made his decision. He should just forget about me." She said.
"Wow, really?" I held my hands up."
"What do you mean, made his decision?" She shook her head.
"Never mind, Liam. I don't want to talk about it if you aren't ordering anything, I really need to get back to work." She told me.
"What the hell happened, Elena?" We had a discussion and we talked about how you were going to fight for your love but now you can't even say his name."
"I don't want to talk about it, Liam. I just want to focus on work." I could see the tears brimming in her eyes.
"Okay, but I think you should talk to Bernard because I think there has been some kind of misunderstanding. He is upset with you and you are upset with him. It doesn't make sense." Her eyes narrowed.
"How can he be upset with me? I didn't do anything besides, I tried speaking with him. I went to his house yesterday and his mother told me that he was out with Helen, picking cake flavors for their upcoming wedding."
"You spoke to Elizabeth, right?" She nodded.
"Yes, I did. Look, Liam, I need to get back to work. The morning rush is about to start." She responded.
"Okay, but you really should talk to Bernard. All of this could just be fixed with a simple conversation." She nodded and turned away from me.
I walked out of the bakery with the wheels in my head turning incessantly. This is all making sense to me now. Elena had come to Bernard's house to see him and Elizabeth lied to her and said he went out with Helen which was a lie. Helen had left the Pack since yesterday with her parents so there was no way she could have been with Bernard. That means that she came up with the lie about Jack Morgan to get Bernard to be angry with Elena.
I had never known Elizabeth to be so spiteful. Yes, she is a woman who is stuck in her ways and a little rough around the edges but she loves her son. He is her only child, why then would she want to purposefully hurt him? She also knew that Bernard would never question her words, she is his mother after all. She had played her card well and everything had been working in her favour.
What she is doing to both of them is wrong, they were fated mates. She of all people knew the happiness of being with your fated mate. Why would she want to force her son into a union where he would be miserable all his life? I need to talk to Bernard and Elizabeth but I don't know who to start with. Bernard is in no state to talk at the moment and Elizabeth, I needed to come up with a strategic way to get information out of her because she is a wizard with words and I wouldn't allow her to play with me.
I am off duty today so I don't need to go to the hospital. I need a second opinion from whom I trusted wholly on this issue. I start the engine of my car, heading straight to my house to meet my mate. She is the only one who can solve this mystery.
