Chapter 31: He Wants You To Stay
Chapter Thirty-one: He Wants You To Stay
Elena
"Who are you, Liam?" I asked and he leaned back in his chair, thinking over my question for a moment.
"I am Doctor Liam Steven, the head doctor of the Crescent Wolf Pack hospital. I am mated to a beautiful woman named Jane, she is my entire world and more. I am the best friend of Bernard Joseph." He responded.
"You have a mate?" He chuckled.
"Don't sound so surprised, I was fortunate enough to be fated with someone. I don't know what I would have done had I been in Bernard's position who had to take a chosen bride." He said and a pang of guilt hit my chest but I didn't let it show on my face.
"It is not so bad," I tried to defend Bernard's fake union.
"Helen seems like a suitable candidate to be his mate. She is an Alpha daughter and she seems to have a lot of bite to her bark. She has all the good attributes of a Luna." I muttered.
"Suitable is as good as saying a copout. Nothing matches the connection of a true fated mate. It is a bond like no other. You are matched to fit perfectly with one another. Previously, there have been some who have denied the bond but so often, they regretted their decision. Mates are blessings and it is a shame that some have treated it as a curse." He explained and I gulped.
"So you don't think that Helen will make a good partner with him?" He shook his head.
"Not as good as his fated mate would have been if he had been blessed with one but with his current age, it is hard to believe that he will ever find his fated mate." He responded, that this conversation was starting to make me feel a bit uncomfortable.
"So, tell me about Jane." I said, hopefully it would distract him momentarily. His face split into a dazzling smile.
"She is just perfect." He beamed.
"She is the definition of an angel, my world never made sense until I met her. She made all those heavy burdens I had to carry from being Beta's son bearable. She completes my entire world." He talks about his mate with a smile on his face. I could tell how much he loved her. It wasn't only in his words but in his eyes as well. My mother always told me that the eyes never lie, they hold every truth a person is trying to hide. That is the reason why those who concealed their feelings in their eyes were considered to be dangerous, that is what is written in my mother's books.
"I would love to meet her one day, she seems like an incredible woman." I muttered.
"You have one, don't you?" His question caught me off guard.
"What do you mean?" I asked back.
"A mate, you have a mate, right? I can see it in the way your gaze glazed over like you were thinking of someone, I know that look. I have seen it enough times on my face to know what a mate pull looks like." I panicked because of what he said. This is not part of the plan, I needed to lie. I needed to keep up my little charade and tell him that he had it all wrong.
"So, do you have a mate, Elena?" He asked.
"Yes." The word slipped from my mouth without my approval. Why did I just tell him that?
"Who is he, Elena?" His eyes were fixed on me.
I opened my mouth to speak but no words came out. I dropped my gaze down to my lap, trying to collect myself. I didn't mean to let it slip through my lips but it just did. I knew Liam was a kind man but I had a hard time trusting people. Alisha was different, I felt connected to her and it was easy to open up to her. It felt like a burden was lifted from my shoulders when I told her the truth.
"Elena." His voice was gentle and cautious.
"I promise you that I won't let anyone know if you tell me the truth. You have my word, I swear." I lifted my head and met his eyes once again. I could see the honesty and sincerity behind them. He is telling me the truth, the eyes never lie.
I looked around the cafeteria, making sure that we were far enough from everyone. There were only a few staff in the area but they were on the other side of the room. It is either I tell him the truth now or never. I inhaled a deep breath.
"At first, I tried to deny it. I thought, maybe I could fight the pull and keep my wolf at bay but with each passing moment I spent with him, saw him, or spoke with him, I felt the pull growing stronger. We haven't even kissed or accepted each other fully, yet our bond is like this siren call that keeps drawing me closer." I took another deep breath and continued.
"I haven't been able to think straight, my mind always wanders back to him. What he is doing and what he is thinking, I am completely consumed by him."
"It is Bernard, isn't it?" Liam asked, my breath caught in my throat. From the way he said it, I knew that it had always been in his mind. He must have known long before he even started questioning me.
"Yes, it is him." I couldn't help the smile that graced my face at my confession. When I told Alisha, I felt a wave of relief wash over me, then I knew I had done the right thing.
"How long have you known?" I asked as he mirrored my smile, he scratched the back of his neck awkwardly as he let out a nervous laugh.
"I started to suspect that something was going on with you guys when you first woke up. The way Bernard was watching you while you slept was not necessarily creepy but it was intense. Then, you woke up and I saw how you looked at him, it was a gaze I have seen on Jane many times." I furrowed my eyebrows.
"So, you have known this entire time and you didn't say anything?" He shrugged.
"I knew Bernard's situation already and your situation was not any less complicated. He is arranged to marry Helen and you stumbled onto his land out of the blue. I knew your relationship was complicated from the get-go, so I figured you both needed time to sort through your feelings and emotions. You guys are very reluctant to sort through your issues by the way." I couldn't help the laughter that escaped my lips because of what he said. I smiled when I saw the look in his eyes as he stared at me.
"I am sorry, Elena." He said.
"For what?" He went over his words in his mind before saying it out loud.
"About Helen." That was all he needed to say for me to understand where he was driving.
My situation was not a simple one that could easily be solved with professions of love. Bernard gives his words that he would marry Helen, I am a rogue on the run from her past. A past that is catching up to me quickly
"There isn't much that can be done about my situation as it stands right now. Bernard is between a rock and a hard place and I am, well…" My voice trailed off, leaving my sentence open-ended. I had just told Liam about a part of my life but I am not ready to reveal the other parts, not now. I needed time to sort through everything in my head.
"You can't give up on him." He reached his hand out onto the table, placing my smaller hands in between his larger ones. The gesture didn't seem intimate, it felt friendly and warm, a welcomed change.
"We never stood a chance, Liam. Everything is stacked against us right now, there is no easy way out of any of this." He squeezed my hands gently, trying to get his point across to me.
"True love is never easy. If it were, everyone would experience it. Love is work, Elena. It is sacrifice, it is perseverance and it is faith. You are going to need all those attributes to help you and Bernard's love survive the storm of life." He tried to give me courage.
"There is nothing to fight for, Liam." I could feel the sting building behind my eyes.
"Even with Bernard knowing that I am his mate, he was still calling Alphas and asking them about me. He doesn't want me to stay." He furrowed his brows.
"What are you saying? Of course, he wants you to stay. He hasn't been calling Alphas, on the contrary, he is doing everything in his power to keep you here. One of them is that he told me to watch over you while he is stuck in the hospital bed." He said to me, my heart felt a little bit relieved.
