Chapter 182: Nicholas's Death

Chapter 182: Nicholas's Death

Elena

I felt better than I had the past few weeks, Bernard and I are on the road to brighter days and I am excited about it. We needed to get over the hill because I was starting to fear that we would be stuck there.

I had thought that trying to force myself to go to work would help clear my mind but Bernard decided that it would be best if I stay home and he was right. I shouldn't have been up and about anyway.

I walked into the kitchen and retrieved a bottle of water, I had been sleeping the entire day. My phone buzzed in my pocket, I took it out and it was Doris calling.

"Hey," I picked up the call.

"Hi, I was just thinking about you and thought I should give you a call. I know that you haven't been the best these few weeks with everything that went on." I sighed.

"Yes, I have been a bit all over the place the last few days…..well, last few weeks to be exact. I just had a lot going on."

"Talk to me." I let out a nervous laugh.

"Where do I even begin? Well, I guess I will let the big one out of the bag first. I thought that I was pregnant."

There was a loud, heavy pause before she let out a scream that I had not been expecting.

"So, are you?"

"No, unfortunately. The test came out negative so we weren't pregnant right now."

"Damn, I am sorry. So what did Bernard think of that? Was he happy, or was he a little bit upset about the whole thing?"

"He was……relieved. I think that would be the right word to use. It did cause some tension between us, it was those things that we needed to face head-on as mates and I think we have come out the other side." She let out a long breath.

"Well, I am glad. I was starting to worry about you and with the death of Veronica, I didn't know how you would be taking it all. I had tried to come by the house a few days ago but Bernard said that you had gone for a run."

"Yes, I had been avoiding people. I didn't know how to deal with my emotions, you know losing Veronica felt like a robbery to me but I know that she would want me to continue on living. I also check up on her husband from time to time as well."

"That's going," I could hear the lightness in her voice.

"Well, I wanted to tell you something too but I think mine is better in person. So, I will come over tomorrow for a chat if that is okay with you?"

"Yeah, sure, of course. Is it a good thing or a bad thing so that I can prepare myself for what is to come?" She let out a light laugh.

"It is a good thing, I believe. At least, I hope you will take it as a good thing."

"Okay, I will take your word for it, I will talk to you later."

"Okay, Elena. I am glad that you are feeling better now." I hung up the call.

I made my way to the bedroom, ready to take a nap as I wanted nothing more than my bed. When I placed my phone on the nightstand, I looked to my left and saw that the window was open. Had I left the window open?

I walked over to the window, slowly trying to remember if I actually had opened it before I went downstairs. I pulled the window closed and looked out and in the distance, I could see the clouds moving in from the far east. I loved the rain but I worried about Bernard and the search party. Mathew was as cunning and dangerous as Richard and he needed to be careful. I knew better not to contact him in the middle of a mission, it would only distract him.

I felt a chill run down my spine and then the scent hit me. He is here, I whirled around, and sure enough, standing by my door was a man who I am sure was banished from the Pack.

"Surprise, Princess." Nicholas sneered evilly at me.

I couldn't believe my eyes, Nicholas us here, in my house and I was alone. I would be lying if I said I wasn't scared at this point in time. Nicholas was a man who had scared me from the first day I met him.

"How are you here?"

I was surprised by how even my voice came out even though I was crapping my pants. This man was one of the best warriors I had ever seen.

"Wow, didn't you miss me, Elena?" He smiled evilly.

"I am here because I missed you so very much."

"I just notified Bernard and he will be here within seconds. So unless you want to die today, I suggest that you leave and never return."

"Nice try, Princess but I know that Bernard has been gone for the past four hours and I have a feeling he won't be back again……" he paused and looked at the invisible watch on his wrist.

"Five hours or so, he is out looking for Matthew, isn't he?" How did he know that?

"I know everything, sweet Elena." He took a menacing step towards me.

"Just like I know that you can't get through to any of the wolves in the Pack now. Want to know I knew all that?"

I tried to reach Liam, Doris, or Alisha through our mind link but there was just silence. He was right, my eyes widened as I stared at him.

"I have lined your house with wolfsbane which means that you have no communication and we are here all alone together."

He took another menacing step towards me and I took one back, my back immediately hitting the window behind me. Crap, I was stuck.

"I have been waiting months to do this."

His eyes began to glow but they weren't their usual amber color, they were a menacing red that looked blood-thirsty and vengeful. My wolf stirred deep inside, she knew that we were about to fight for our lives.

"I guess it is time I put you in your place."

I growled even though I was shaking on the inside. This was not what I had been expecting at all when I woke up this morning. But it was either fight for me or die trying and I knew I had so much to live for so I am going to fight.

I allowed my wolf to take over as I lunged for him, I reached my paw back and rushed for him, ready to split him into two. But he was too quick, he dodged my claws and moved out of the way. He shifted himself and pushed me so that I slammed into the wall on the other side of the room. I got to my feet quickly and lunged for him again, this time I slid my body down and scratched him on his underbelly. He howled in pain and went to move around and clamped his teeth down into my leg. I growled, whacking him in the face with my paw and then clawing him until he released me. I hopped backwards, keeping my eyes on him the entire time. Nicholas crouched down, ready to pounce and I readied myself, and placed my injured back leg on the ground.

Nicholas charged for me and at the very last second, I moved out of the way and he ran through the window but not before he caught me by the neck, dragging me along with him. We fell to the ground in a big tumble. I heard something crack and immediate pain shot throughout my entire body. He got up first but from the way he stood, I could tell that he was also hurt. He snapped his jaws at me, trying to be menacing and threatening.

My body hurt all over and my strength was draining by the second but I didn't let that get into my head. One of us must go down and it most certainly was not going to be me. I had one shot at this and if it worked, I would live but if it didn't, I would most likely have just sentenced myself to death.

I wobbled to my feet and lowered myself, ready to strike. Nicholas snapped his jaw at me before he lunged in my direction. His feet dug into the dirt as he surged himself forward. When he was a few meters away from me, I moved out of the way at the last second and lurched myself into the air and snapped my jaw down on his neck, and twisted myself mid-air, taking him in the opposite direction he was going. I pressed down harder onto his neck, the metallic taste of his blood flooding into my mouth. He squealed in pain and tried to twist around and bite me but I was locked in, there was no way he could reach me from that angle.

I held on to her dear life, making sure that I tired him out until I felt him lose all his strength and his body went limp. I could still hear his slowing heart, so I didn't let go until I heard him take his final breaths. When I was sure that he was dead, I released my hold and stumbled a few steps back. The thunder roared about me and I felt the first droplets of rain hit my fur. I looked up at the sky, my eyes welling with tears.

I had done it, I had defeated Nicholas once and for all. My blood started shaking as I slowly began to shift back into my human form. When I was done shifting, I looked down at my naked body and saw the gushing wound on my stomach and the pain in my neck became more pronounced.

I tried to take a step towards my house but immediately my vision blurred and my legs gave out from under me. The last thing I remembered was the sound of the thunder roaring above me and the single flash of lightning across the sky.
