Chapter 183: One Less Obstacle
Chapter 183: One Less Obstacle
Bernard
My men and I had been wandering the forest and local towns for an hour now, it was no use. If Mathew were anywhere nearby, we would have felt his presence by now. He would more than likely have ambushed us or taken the time to at least slow us down. We moved as quickly as we could have, so why was it that we missed him?
Mathew is strong and cunning but he didn't have the support that I had as Alpha of my Pack. He was given the Pack due to his cruel nature as much as Richard had done. Elena deserved the title of Alpha, not Mathew who was barely a hitman.
"Bernard, I don't know if we were going to find him. We have lost all traces."
I didn't turn to my men as they approached behind me, I had to focus on what needed to be done. Jasper and his group would be circling back by now, especially as they had texted me that they hadn't found any traces either. Was Mathew messing with us? How would he expect to get anywhere by simply toying with us like this?
There was a sudden sharp pain in my neck that vibrated through my spine and shocked my entire system. My chest twisted and anxious nausea boiled up, bile filling my throat. Something wasn't right, I had to get back now, I needed to see my mate. There was a tense twist in my lungs as I pivoted to face my men. I needed to see Elena, I should she left her alone. Mathew has been trying to kill her and this could have been a diversion.
"We need to get back right now."
"Go back?" One of my men said as I moved past them.
"Yes, I need to check on Elena. Something is not right, call Jasper and have him follow us back."
"Yes, Alpha."
I heard the beeps as they started calling Jasper but I didn't wait. I ran but sprinted back, fuck these unless legs. I needed to get there faster, at this rate. It will take another hour to get back. My wolf howled as I released a growl and gave in to it needing to be let out. My body shifted in the blink of an eye, the quickest I had ever changed before. I didn't pay it much mind as my entire body was burning with thoughts of my mate. I had to hurt now.
My paws paddled along the dirt paths and crunched sticks as we cut straight through the woods and bounced ever closer to home. I could smell all of the Pack members and see the building in the distance. I pivoted as I was about a mile out, rounding the town and heading towards my house. My house was on the outskirts of the town which allowed us some privacy.
As I grew closer to the house, I noticed the stench of blood in the air. It clogged my throat and came alive, wrapping my lungs in a noose, it was Elena's blood. I had smelled her blood enough to know it easily. What happened? She has to be alive, she needs to be alive.
"Elena, I am coming. Please hold on." I murmured.
I didn't care about my men rushing behind me or even registering what they were barking at each other about, I only had Elena in my mind. My paws skidded against the crimson-stained grass as I reached the source of the strong scent. My mate lay on the ground mere feet away and a body lay face down not too far from her. With one breath in, I was able to tell without a doubt that it was Nicholas, that fucking bastard.
"Elena!" I yelled and the maid began to rush out of the house. She has to be alive, she is strong and I knew she could get through anything.
She refused to move and there was no reaction when I called her name. I bit my tongue to hold my anguish back even though my heart was throbbing in every inch of my body. With my hands, I gently moved her onto her back and as soon as I had, I heard a small gasp as she breathed in. It was as though my soul had reentered my body, she was alive.
"We need Liam!" I shouted, trying to pick her up at the same time as l checked her for all of her wounds.
Jasper had arrived quickly and jogged over to Nicholas, kicking the bastard onto his back but there was no response, somehow that came as no relief but Elena was still injured.
"Bernard, I am here." Liam pushed through the crowd of wolves and reached my side.
"Let's get her to the hospital."
He ran next to me as we hurried through the street, my vision blurred as I stared down at Elena, my mate. She almost died, she could have……no, I don't think like that. She is alive, she is going to fight this. It all happened so fast, Liam had me place her on the bed once we arrived at the hospital. He ordered the nurses to get the instruments needed and I was kicked to the side but no one dared to order me to leave. They worked as a team, almost too quickly for me to even process. I had to use the walls to keep myself from falling to my knees in prayer. Elena had to survive this, she nodded.
It felt like hours before Liam appeared in front of me and placed a hand on my shoulder.
"Bernard, it is okay. She is stable now."
"Is she going to be okay?"
"She should be but……
"No…..no….no, what is i"
"She has a lot of internal bleeding from the attack. We were doing our best to relieve the pressure and also keep her comfortable while she healed. She hasn't regained consciousness though, we have to wait and see if she will wake up." What does that even mean?
"And if she doesn't?"
"She could be in a coma for days or weeks, it could be longer. I just want you to be prepared, Bernard."
"Liam, please save her. I don't care what it takes." He nodded and stepped back.
"I will do the best I can, Alpha."
Jasper and other people were outside the door when I exited. Alisha, Jack, and Doris were there as well.
"She is stable but she is still in a coma. Liam doesn't know when or if she will wake up." Damn it, why would my voice have to crack?
"Nicholas is dead, Elena must have killed him in the fight," Jasper muttered. He was tense and round tight like a knot. He probably wanted to be the one that kills Nicholas but is all over now.
"Good, one less obstacle."
"Do you think Mathew was a part of this?" Alisha moved forward but she didn't raise her hand to my arm. That was a good decision as I wasn't sure I could handle any affection right now, I might just crack.
"No, he would have attacked us head-on. Not draw us away and simply attack Elena and he wouldn't allow Nicholas to kill Elena either. Since she is the rightful leader of their Pack, whoever technically killed her gets ownership of it. He wouldn't let anyone take that from him."
My words were distant and all I could think about was Elena laying there, asleep with only a slim chance of ever waking up.
"Who do you think would have helped him?" Jasper wondered.
"There is no way Nicholas snuck in on his own, someone would have helped him."
Doris stepped up to Jasper's side, her body tight, her eyes red. I almost forgot that Nicholas was her brother. I should comfort her but I can't be sad for her, not about this. I trusted her without a doubt, though, and even now, she didn't say anything about her grief.
"Nicholas was staying in Ronald's Pack, he told me weeks ago. He wanted to know where he was but I never planned on visiting him."
"Ronald?" Jasper asked.
He placed his hand on Doris's back and she leaned into him, at least she had someone to care for her loss.
Ronald, of course, would stoop to this level, wouldn't he? He had the means and the resources to do it too. He could get Nicholas in undetected especially as his Pack is still staying on my land but not anymore. I swallowed my rage and tried to channel my composure.
"Jasper, grab our best warriors."
"Bernard?" His brow dipped with confusion.
"We are going to get a confession, one way or another."
I pivoted and stormed away from my Pack, Elena was going to be okay and Ronald was going to pay for helping Nicholas hurt her.
