Chapter 44: Meeting Doris

Chapter forty-four: Meeting Doris

Nicholas

I had thirty-five more Alpha who resided on the Western shore to reach out in order to find information about the crazy girl. But if that doesn't work, then I will expand my search.

I scrolled down the list and dialed the next number after Alpha David. The phone rang twice before he finally picked up.

"Hello?" Alpha Axel painted through the receiver
end.

"Hello, Alpha Axel. It is Nicholas from Crescent Wolf Pack, I hope I haven't disturbed you?" He took in a deep breath before responding.

"No, I was just coming from a sparring session with my son. How can I help you?" He asked.

"Yes, I was calling to see if you may be missing a Pack member. We stumbled across a harmless rogue a few weeks ago, poor thing suffers from amnesia and we are looking to help her find her home."

"The answer is no, everyone in my Pack is all accounted for." He replied.

"By the way, how is Bernard? I heard about the attack, these rogues are causing a lot of problems for us. They need to be eradicated immediately and swiftly." He said.

"Bernard is doing well, he is recovering now and in just a few days of rest, he will be back on his feet again. And I couldn't agree more with you about the rogues, it is a problem we all must address sooner rather than later." He hummed in agreement.

"I am sorry, I couldn't be of more help to you."

"No problem at all. I will keep looking and if you could also ask around for me, Alpha Axel. Your help would be greatly appreciated." The tone of voice I had used with these Alpha had me feeling nauseous and disgusted with myself but I needed to pay the piper if I wanted them to play and that was exactly what I was doing.

I continued as I contacted Alphas one by one. The responses were roughly all the same, I would do a little sucking up and then I will ask about Elena. They would tell me that they don't know her and then the conversation would end.

After my seventh call ended the same way, I gave up. I felt very frustrated, angry, and annoyed. It was like this girl didn't even exist. Who is Elena and why was it so damn hard to find out about her past? She was tight-lipped, so I couldn't get it from her.

"Damn it!" I slammed the phone onto the desk.

My Dad had been known to have a temper and it had passed down to his children. Unlike my Dad, my sister was able to keep her rage in check. I, on the other hand, had yet to master that skill. I found myself just needing to punch something or tear something with my teeth. My Mum often said I was exactly like my Dad and for a while, I had taken offense to it but now I loved that I was exactly like my Dad.

My Dad is a man of vision and I wanted to have the same mindset. I wasn't blind or deaf as to what the members of my Pack said about me. They feared me and through their fear, they respected me. I was not a nice man, I never pretended or claimed to be as disciplined and intelligent as myself. I trained like I was training for war.

I am a man who was never satisfied with what I had. I always needed more, I always had to have more. When Liam announced that he would not be taking the role of Beta, there was a spot left to fill. I remembered I worked day and night making sure that I was the most suitable candidate.

"I have come too far to quit now." I mumbled to myself and made my way to the door. I had other issues to attend to. As I opened the door, I heard the unmistakable sound of barefoot padding against the hardwood floors and when I looked down the hallway, I saw my sister's frame make a mad dash to one of the rooms close to my Dad's office.

So, she has been listening to me. I had two options, I could either just wait and see what she would do or I would go and confront her about eavesdropping on me. Normally, I would have picked the second option but I wanted to give my sister the benefits of the doubt. I would wait for her to come to me and then we would speak. I had a feeling that maybe once I explained everything, she would see things through a different lens.

I walked down the hallway like I didn't see her at all. Once I left the house, I made my way back to the Packhouse to fulfill my duties. The ball is in my court now.

Elena

I had just gotten up from my sleep and it was already afternoon. Alisha had come to wake me up and told me she needed to go to work. She worked part-time in the hospital and the Alpha's house as the maid. So that means I will be all alone till later in the day.

I could have taken Jack's offer to teach me how to fish but I wasn't up for new company today. I needed to have some time alone because tomorrow I will start work very early and I need some rest time for myself. The lodge had a cafeteria area that served three meals a day. The main Packhouse also had a dining area but many of the gammas preferred to dine here for obvious reasons. In here, they wouldn't be picked on or ridiculed by the other high-ranking Pack members.

Unfortunately, the mated gammas had to eat with the rest of the Pack if they didn't live in separate homes throughout town. I hated how the gammas were made to feel like the bottom of the barrel within the Pack. I know it had always been this way but it didn't mean that it had to stay like that. The gammas deserved better and had just as enough of a right to respect as the other high-ranking wolves did.

I just finished my bowl of cereal, it was one of the things I had missed most while being a wolf. I was about to get up from my table to put my plates away when a girl with wild looking blonde hair plopped herself in the chair opposite mine. She was silent for a moment as she stared at me with curiosity in her eyes. She tilted her head to the side slightly and ran her eyes over my face

"Wow, you are really beautiful. I will give you that." She stated.

"Hmmm, thank you." I responded.

That was strange, her hazel eyes kept peering at me like I was the most fascinating she had ever seen for a while.

"I am Doris, by the way." She extended her hand for me to shake.

"Doris Mark." She added and I returned the handshake.

"Nice to meet you." I pulled my hand back, eyeing her suspiciously. She seemed like a nice person but if my years on the run had taught me anything, it was that everyone was a threat until proven otherwise.

"You are Elena, right?" I nodded, how did she know my name? She must have seen the look of suspicion on my face because she let out a soft chuckle and waved me off.

"Don't worry, I am not some type of psycho stalker or something. You are the talk of the town now, the girl with the fiery red hair and haunting blue eyes." She said.

Haunting? I never thought of my eyes being haunting. I didn't know if I liked that but at the same time, I didn't really care what people thought about me. The only opinions that truly mattered to me were my own and Bernard's. I couldn't help the small flutter that came over my chest as I thought about him. I already missed him and it had only been a few hours since I had last seen him. His presence was like a drug to me, I craved more of it with each new dose I got. He was the type of ocean I wanted to get lost in.

"How are you liking the Pack so far?" I shrugged.

"It is nice and most of the people here are friendly." Her eyebrows furrowed.

"What do you mean, most? Has someone given you any trouble?" She asked.

I didn't want to talk about Nicholas because the man was like a tyrant. If it hadn't been for Bernard and Liam banning him from interrogating me, he would have been on me like white rice.

"It was a guy called Nicholas, the Pack's Beta. He was giving me a bit of a hard time but it is fine now. Bernard and Liam warned him not to come near me anymore." Her eyebrows shot up.

"Really? What exactly did he do?" I bit down on my lips, suddenly not wanting to go further with my story. She is a Pack member, after all, I didn't want to talk about one of their leaders.
