Chapter 181: Scouting Mission

Chapter 181: Scouting Mission

Bernard

Things have just been a freaking show the past few months, from the pregnancy scare to Veronica's death, a lot has been going on. And now, my scouts had said there were rumors of Matthew being back in the area. This was the last thing I wanted now. Elena and I are fine but I knew there was still some tension between us. She hadn't said the exact words that she had forgiven me which was what I had wanted to hear more than anything. Instead, she tiptoed around me, always being polite.

I loved her and I knew she loved me too but the problem was that we had been on two different pages on the pregnancy. I wanted to support her and be excited but it wasn't the right time for a baby. My reaction had broken her and I hated to say this but the funeral had brought us closer together. She leaned into me for strength and I and I had been her pillar like I had promised I would be in my vows.

But after the funeral, she shut me down again. I told her to take a break from work but she didn't listen to me. She wanted to work because she said it kept her mind from running idle. I wanted whatever gave her the most peace and if it meant plunging back into work, then so be it. She was barely coping and I wasn't helping the situation either, I was sure of it. Her eyes were distant and empty, usually when she stared at me, they gleamed and glowed but now they just sort of looked dead.

I turned on my side and brushed the hair out of her eyes. She had slept almost five hours this time around which was the most she had gotten in a while. I didn't want to wake her, so I shut off her alarm and switched off her phone. I will be the one to handle all her work today. I kissed her head and she barely stirred. I got out of bed and decided to use the guest room bathroom to get ready.

It took me ten minutes and headed downstairs for my breakfast. I had informed all the maids not to wake Luna and to allow her to rest. I also instructed them to take her food to the bedroom when she woke up and told her that she would be staying home for the day as per my orders. I knew she would try to fight it but eventually, she would see my logic. I would also not be within the Pack lands for the day so she wouldn't be able to yell at me until after I returned.

I will be heading out with the scouts to look for Matthew, my wife didn't need that kind of stress on her shoulder right now, all things considered. Mathew is a threat that I could not leave to chance. He needed to be dealt with swiftly and effectively. We would track him in to stand trial and after the elders deemed him guilty, I would then implement his punishment.

I would not have mercy on him, he was the reason I almost lost, not only my life but the lives of so many in my pack. The dead are still being mourned to this day, he would pay for the blood that was on his hands.

When I walked into the dining room, I saw Jasper sitting on the chair with his face buried in his phone with a smile on his face. Jasper never smiled and when he did, it was only ever to his friends or children. He hated people, he said they were insufferable to him.

"What got you smiling so early in the morning?" He snapped his neck up and looked at me before he pocketed his phone.

"Please, don't stop on my account, do carry on. It is nice to see one of us smiling at these times." I walked over to my seat.

"Elena still not doing well" I shook my head.

"She barely eats and hardly sleeps. It is only today that she was able to sleep through the night, I don't know how to make her pain go away."

"She is grieving, time is the best healer of things like that." I shrugged.

"I guess you are right, now let's talk business. How many teams have been assembled for the hunt today?"

"We have two teams and each has five scouts in them. You will lead one and I will lead the other, we will move out from the northern border because that was where the suspicious wolves were spotted heading to." I nodded.

"We have also been keeping a close eye on the Silver Crest Pack territory. It has been silent for the most part as most of their wolves are still healing. There is a rumor though that they lost their head doctor but we are not too sure how true that is."

" I don't know if it is good news or bad news that there has been silence from that side. Mathew is not a man who takes too kindly to losing, especially if it was a woman who beat him."

"Alpha, forgive me for being so forward but why don't we just take the Pack seeing as it is Luna's birthright."

"It has to be a decision from Elena alone and she has shown no interest in the land. All she wants is to liberate the wolves themselves. I think the land holds too much trauma for her to ever want to go back to it." He nodded.

Elena had a lot on her plate but that all had to be tabled until she was ready to join the world again. I was sure that when her heart felt stronger, she would make the necessary decision but until then, I would man the fort.

"When do we run?"

"Within the hour, Alpha. We will meet at the northern border and then you can give your instructions to your team."

"Will Doris be joining us?"

"No," he said a little quickly before he cleared his throat.

"What I mean to say is the pack still needs good defense while we are gone and Doris will watch over the pack in our absence."

"And Liam will take over decision making for the time being."

It only seemed fitting to have Liam be our backup, he had leadership coursing through his veins. The Pack would listen to him because they carried a great deal of respect for him. We finished our breakfast and were about to head out when I heard the door to our bedroom open. Elena was awake and she was probably trying to head downstairs to where I was.

"I will meet you outside."

I informed Jasper and bolted for the stairs, I took them two at a time until I was in the hallway. I saw her stepping out of the room in her robe and slippers. She stopped and stared at me for a moment before she gave me a small wave. I closed the distance between us and stood in front of her. I stared down at her, she looked better than she had before but I could still see the heavy bags under her eyes.

I cupped the side of her face and I feared that she would pull out of my hold as she had been backing out of my touch lately but she actually leaned into it. She closed her eyes and let out a contented sigh and I relaxed. She opened her eyes and stared at me with those jewels that had captured my heart from day one.

"I have been struggling."

Her voice was barely above a whisper, she sounded so tired and broken, I didn't hesitate to pull her into my arms and she circled her arms around my waist and breathed in my scent. I jealously breathed in her scent as well. It felt like ages since we had been like this, it felt like coming home. Tears were brimming down her eyes when she pulled away.

"I am sorry, I have been so distant and had been pushing you away and I know that you were trying but I just felt so broken."

"It is okay, my love. I understand, I was not the most supportive mate in that instance. I should have been there for you but I wasn't. I promise that I will never do that again."

I brushed away the tears that had fallen down her eyes. They didn't need to talk anymore, we were good and that was fine. We would move forward from what had happened and we would only grow stronger and stronger with each passing day. We are Elena and Bernard after all. We had survived so much before and there was nothing that could break us. We would always bounce back stronger than ever before.

Now, I didn't want to go on this scouting mission but I knew that I needed to. Until this threat was dealt with, we wouldn't be able to rest peacefully.

I just hoped that I could get this done quickly and return home to my wife so I could love her the way in which she deserved.
