Chapter 186: I Can't Survive Without You

Elena

The first thing I noticed was the pounding in my head, it was this incessant thundering that had me groaning in pain. I heard a muffled voice in the distance and I felt a hand grab onto mine. My eyes were still shut tight as I tried to fight against the pain in my head. I groaned again, trying to make sense of things.

Where am I?

Then it all came flooding back to me like a ton of bricks, Nicholas had crossed the borders and found his way into my home. He had attacked me and I was able to kill him.

My eyes snapped open and I let out a huge gasp like I had just surfaced from being underwater. Immediately my eyes found my mate and I felt the peace wash over me.

"It is okay, my love. You are safe now." His voice sounded distant but his touch was so much. I felt the tingles rise up and down my spine.

Just from the touch alone, the pain seemed to fade and become more bearable. The world around me became clearer in both sight and sound. I heard the steady beating of the monitor in the distance and the familiar scent of antiseptic hit my nose. I was in the hospital which meant that I was still alive.

For a moment, I thought I had possibly died and passed over into paradise but I was still here. I had been saved, I had another chance of life with my mate. The tears already started too before I even had a chance to pull them back. Bernard stared down at me with those green eyes that had my heart melting, he smiled softly at me as he brushed away the tears.

"I thought I almost lost you." He choked out, trying to fight back his own tears.

"When I saw all that blood and you laying there, I didn't know what to think. I didn't know what to do, you looked dead and I felt all hope leaves me."

My arms felt too heavy to lift so my hands could come over his that were cupping my face. I just stared at him with teary eyes.

"I am okay," I struggled to get out.

"I am okay and I am here with you, alive and still breathing."

"You are my air, Elena. Without you, I would suffocate. I can't survive without you."

"You are my air too," I whispered.

He brought his face down to mine without a second thought and captured my lips in his. His kiss electrified every cell in my body and every fiber in my body. It was like he was giving me a new air to my lungs just like he had said.

I melted further into my pillow, feeling the healing slowly taking place in my body. I love him, I love this more than I had ever loved anything else on this entire planet. He is my life source and I never wanted to lose him. I made a decision that no longer would we go for days or weeks without speaking because of disagreement or argument. I love him more than our bad days and I love him more than any disagreement we got into.

"Well, I am glad to say that you are alive and well." Liam's voice pierced through the room, causing us to pull apart.

Bernard cast him a nasty look that said he needed to leave and I just chuckled. Immediately regretted it because a sharp pain shot out of my neck. I hissed in pain and my husband looked at me, his eyes filled with concern.

"Did I hurt you?" He asked, panicked which I shook my head to.

"It is her neck," Liam said from the door as he stepped in.

"She suffered a nasty bite on her neck, your kiss probably numbed her pain for a little while but now that you aren't kissing her, the pain is more pronounced."

"So what you are trying to say is that I need to kiss my mate to take away her pain?" A playful gleam filled his eyes.

"I would be more than happy to act as her personal pain relief."

I rolled my eyes but that didn't stop the blush from creeping up my cheeks. I had no objections to him being my pain relief either, in fact, I would take him over morphine any day of the week.

"Slow your roll, big boy." Liam walked up to my bedside.

He gestured for Bernard to move away a little bit so that he could administer his tests on me. Bernard pouted but he moved away while keeping his hand clutched on mine. He threaded our fingers together giving my hand a gentle squeeze, I loved that his touch calmed so much inside me. We truly were fated mates, there was no better feeling like this on earth. I love him and he loves me, there was nothing that could ever break us.

As soon as Liam finished with his work, Bernard moved closer to the bed. He looked to his best friend as he explained all of the medical stuff that I couldn't care to listen to.

"Elena?" Liam called my attention and I snapped my neck in his direction.

"Sorry, I wasn't listening. What did you say?"

"I said that you should be fully healed within the coming weeks seeing as Bernard helps to relieve the pain. But I must say that there shouldn't be too much pain relief administered." From the way he was saying it, I knew he was talking about sex.

"Okay, noted." I blushed, looking at my mate who was smirking playfully at me. He wagged his eyebrows at us and I laughed softly. Liam is something silly but I love that about him.

"Bernard, I am serious. At least wait two weeks before you try and get into her panties."

"Liam?" I blushed.

"What? I just thought I would be explicitly clear on that note. Seeing as my friend here sometimes finds it hard to obey authority."

"I will be a well-behaved boy for the next two weeks." My husband drew an 'x' over his chest.

"Cross my heart." Liam scoffed.

"It is not your heart I am worried about but nevertheless, all the best to you. I leave you two to catch up and I will be back a little later to administer your medicine, Elena." He left us alone in the room.

Bernard looked at me, a serious shadow forming over his face. He was thinking hard and whenever he did that, I knew that something was bothering him.

"What is it?" I squeezed his hand, he snapped out of whatever trance he had come under and looked at me.

"It is nothing, my love. You just rest, we can talk about it later."

"No," I said in defiance.

"I want to talk about it now, what is going on with you, Bernard? I am your mate and your partner, your problems are also mine to bear."

He looked away before he turned his attention back to me. There was a crease in the middle of his forehead, so I knew that whatever it was, was really eating him up.

"It was Ronald that sent Nicholas to kill you."

The silence that filled the room was deafening, I couldn't believe what he had just said.

"What do you mean?" These were the only words I could utter out of my mouth.

"Well," he took a seat on a chair beside the bed.

"I had some Intel that Ronald had allowed Nicholas to stay in his land. When I found you, I knew that somehow Ronald had to be involved so I confronted him and he told me everything." I was silent.

"He wanted to kill you so that he could get Helen and me back together. I don't know how in heaven's name he thought that was going to happen. He thought that if he murdered you I would somehow just turn to his daughter. The idea itself is comical."

"I don't know what to say." He shook his head.

"I didn't know what to say either but his pack agreed with me and knew that he needed to go. So they formed a coup and overthrew his rule. His Beta is now the new Alpha. He is a good man with a good heart and I am sure that he will do right by his Pack and will honor his promises to me."

I was shocked by everything that Bernard told me. How can Ronald come up with such a ridiculous plan, to begin with? It was so crazy to me to think that he would do such a thing.

After all, Bernard had done for him by showing him mercy, he deserved the banishment he had received. I didn't think any Alpha in these modern days had been overthrown by their people. It was a shameful thing for him to undergo, the only person I felt sorry for in the whole situation was Helen's child. I wondered what would happen to the child after he or she was born and if Jones would see his pup.

There were still so many questions but talking about Ronald and his family was only souring my mood. I wanted to celebrate the fact that I am alive.

"Can we stop talking about them for a little bit? Talking about them is only souring me." He squeezed my hand.

"Of course, I think you should sleep for a while because I can see your eyes struggling to stay open. So why don't you just rest for a little while."

Surprisingly I was able to do exactly that and sleep found me easily.
