Chapter 45: Amnesia
Chapter forty-five: Amnesia
Elena
"I don't want to talk about it and besides, it is all over now. He stays away from me and I stay away from him." She nodded in understanding.
There was something in her eyes that told me that she was trying to piece some things together. Call it a gut feeling if you want but there was something this girl isn't telling me. She wasn't just being friendly for the sake of being friendly.
"You called Bernard by his first name?" It wasn't a question but it was a statement.
Damn it, of course, she would find it weird that a rogue in her eyes would call an Alpha by his first name. It was considered improper for lower-ranking wolves not to address Alphas without their title. Unless they were family, friends, or mates.
"Yes." I laughed nervously.
"Bernard told me it is okay to call him by his first name. After all, we were friends." I muttered.
"Right." She chewed on the inside of her cheeks.
"It is very strange to see an Alpha and a rogue get along so well." What exactly is this girl trying to get from me? Her gaze now felt intrusive as she stared at me like she could see right through me. I am starting to feel uneasy.
"Bernard just made a compromise for me, I suppose. I didn't have the easiest time when I crossed over into his lands. Some Alphas would also be kind and warm just as she was." She nodded in agreement.
"That is true, Bernard is the best of them." She replied.
"You also call him by his first name?" She blinked.
"We were family friends and I grew up with him. He used to hang out a lot with my brother when they were young." She responded.
"And now?" I asked but she shrugged.
"I mean, they work together but they are hardly friends anymore. Now, they are more like coworkers that simply co-exist." There was a story behind that statement she just made, especially the way her face turned solemn at the mention of her brother. I wanted to ask what happened that broke their relationship but then, I thought better of it. I didn't want her prying into my life so I wouldn't pry into hers.
"What about you?" She asked and I looked at her confused.
"What about me?" I asked back.
"I was told that you were experiencing mild symptoms of amnesia. I was told that you can't remember much about your past, your family, or the Pack you came from." I let out a humorless laugh.
"News travels fast within this Pack, right?" She laughed softly.
"I told you that you are the talk of the Pack right now. So tell me, is it hard?" I became confused with her question again.
"Is what hard?"
"Having amnesia. Not being able to remember parts of you or those you love." She responded and the irony of it all was that I wished I did have amnesia.
I wanted to forget everything, I wanted to forget the pain of losing my parents. The pain of being on the run for ten years, and the pain of having to leave my home behind because the leader who was meant to protect me was the source of all of my pain. I wanted to tell her I needed amnesia. It would be much easier if I forgot everything and got to start afresh with no fears and no worries plaguing my heart and mind. But I didn't, instead, I continued my little ruse.
"I can't miss people that I don't remember. I don't even think I have a family out there." That was totally a lie.
I had no family left out there, Richard had killed the only two people I considered my family. He had ripped my entire world to shreds the day he decided to kill my parents like it was nothing.
"Fair enough." She responded.
We sat in awkward silence for a few moments, I was looking anywhere but at her, and she was twiddling her thumbs and flicking her eyes between me and her hands. This conversation had been strange to begin with and now, it felt like the right time to leave. I stood up from my seat gathering my empty bowl.
"It was lovely meeting you but I need to get going now. Maybe, I will see you around some other time." I said as she stood up from her seat as well.
"My pleasure meeting you, Elena. I have a feeling we are going to be great friends in due time." She responded.
Really? How had she gotten that from our conversation? If anything, this conversation made me want to know her less. I offered her a tight-lipped smile and I started walking towards the kitchen without sparing her another look.
"Elena?" She called from behind, I turned around to face her and waited for her to speak again.
"Be careful around here." She advised me.
"Not everyone will have your best interest at heart. If you need me for anything at all, don't hesitate to come and find me." She didn't give me a chance to respond, she turned on her heels and walked out of the dining area.
What was that all about and what exactly was she warning me of? Was she talking about herself or was she talking about someone else in the Pack? What did she know that I didn't?
My mind was running wild and that uneasy feeling in my stomach returned.

Bernard
I stared at myself in the mirror once more, I was in a black form fitting suit that I had picked out. A yellow rose was pinned to my lapel and my hair was slicked back. My father walked beside me and stared at me in the large floor length mirror. His salt and pepper hair was slicked back as well and he wore a similar tux to mine except he had no flowers by his lapel. He slapped me on the shoulder and squeezed it.
"How are you feeling, my boy?" I couldn't help the smile that crept onto my face.
"She is the one, father. It has always been her even before I knew her." My father returned my smile.
"The moon goddess is never wrong, my son. I know she will bless your union." I nodded in agreement.
Everything had led to this moment right here, I had been waiting forever for her and now that I finally had her, I am never going to let her go. My father left me to finish getting ready. A few minutes after he had left, Liam walked in with a letter in his hand. He had the cheesiest smile on his face so I already knew who the note was from.
"It is from her, isn't it?" I asked.
"Yes," He responded.
"Did you give her my gift?" I asked as he handed the letter to me and he nodded.
"She was in tears when she opened the box. Alisha had to touch up her makeup and everything again." He replied.
I had gotten her a necklace with the infinity sign on it. It was encrusted with yellow diamonds and had our initials on the back. I had it made special for her as a constant reminder that our love was exactly like that sign, infinite. We were to become one today and it would symbolize the beginning of our eternity.
"How is she?" My heart thudded in my chest.
She is happy, I have never seen a woman as happy in my entire life. She looks so beautiful, Bern. She pulled out all the stops today." Liam said.
She had always been beautiful, there was not a single moment ever since I had laid my eyes on her that she wasn't beautiful.
"I will leave you to it." He gestured to the envelope in my hand.
"See you out there, man." I nodded and he left me in the room alone.
I looked out of my large floor-to-ceiling bedroom window that overlooked the eastern side of the Pack. I could see the mountains off into the distance, it was almost four in the afternoon and the heat had calmed. It was the perfect day, not even a single rain cloud could be found in the sky. I looked down at the envelope in my hand and let out a heavy breath. I braced myself before I ripped the top part of the envelope open and pulled out the piece of paper. I opened the paper and looked down at my mate's handwriting.
