Chapter 26: Bernard's Mother

Chapter twenty-six: Bernard's Mother

Elena

My heart dropped to my stomach hearing those words from Alisha. Everything I had just been talking about and imagining doing now seemed like nothing but a distant dream.

"When did she arrive?" I asked Alisha.

"She got here a few hours ago and she went straight to the hospital to see Bernard. I believe she is still there but Alpha Bernard's mother is here." She responded.

"What?" I was shocked, she was in this house? The same house that I am currently staying in.

I was surprised at the little territorial side that I felt when I realized she was going to be in Bernard's house. A home that I felt was mine.

"Does Bernard know about this?" I asked.

"Yes and no, we have been preparing for Helen's homecoming for some time now. Her family will be staying with Alpha Bernard as they prepare for the wedding and other formalities." I nodded.

So she is moving in and I am also moving in. How would that even work? Were they going to share the same room? How long would it be before the wedding? Should I leave? Or should I stay and speak to Bernard first?

So many questions swam in my head, I just came to the conclusion that I was going to talk to Bernard about our bond before Helen's arrival and now she is here. All that confidence I built up was slowly leaving my body. Alisha looked at me and knew exactly what I was thinking.

"They are not going to sleep in the same room. The protocols prohibited two unmated wolves from sharing the same room. It is a law in the Pack." Her words calmed some of the worries inside me but not all of them.

Helen Elison is here and she is going to be around Bernard all the time. I am his mate and I wasn't allowed anywhere near his room while he was still in the hospital. Goodness, I hate this. Whenever something started to take a good turn in my life, something always came in to ruin it all for me. I was stupid enough to believe that maybe there was a slight glimmer of hope for us but then it was quickly sniffed out and taken from me.

"Luna, hmmm, I mean, Elena." She corrected herself quickly.

"May I speak freely?" I am sure that I wasn't going to like what she was about to say.

"Do you care for Alpha Bernard?" I shrugged.

"Of course I do, that is what the pull does. It makes you care for your mate." She shook her head.

"Not necessarily, my mother always used to tell me that her pull was more or less like a guide pointing in the direction that would bring her the most happiness. But since the moon goddess gave us free will, we have the opportunity to choose, which is why some wolves end up rejecting their mates. So I asked again, regardless of the mate pull, do you really care for Alpha Bernard?" The easiest response would have been to say no. To say that I didn't care for him so that I couldn't make the feelings I had on the inside real. Saying no wouldn't have complicated things, in fact, it would have simplified things for me. It would have been safer to lie and deny everything to her and myself but I wouldn't lie. I wanted to be honest for once. Since I had been here, all I did was lie and hide. This is going to be my one truth, my one real thing.

"Yes, I do." I replied and she didn't say a word, she just nodded.

After a few minutes of silence, I decided that it would be better to leave. If his mother is here, I need to at least go and greet her but to say I was nervous was an understatement.

"Can you take me to his mother, Alisha?" She nodded and led us out of the door. We hadn't even gotten up to three steps when we saw some people walking up the stairs towards the direction of my room. My back immediately straightened as I tried to appear taller than I actually was.

Bernard's mother was the one leading them up to the stairs. I only knew because she was narrowed on me. She had the same beautiful eyes as Bernard but unlike Bernard, she had blond hair that was done into a stylish updo. I could tell already from her facial expressions that she wasn't at all pleased with my presence in her son's house.

As they walked closer to us, I could feel her tense behind me. She even cowered a little behind me so she wasn't in the direct line of his mother. They came and stopped in front of us.

"Luna." I bowed my head to her in greetings. Although I was more of a wolf for almost a decade, I had not lost the manners my mother had instilled in me.

When I lifted my eyes to her again, I could see the disgust in her eyes. Behind her, a man and a woman stood whom I could only presume were Helen's parents. I bowed my head to them in greetings as well.

"Alpha, Luna." I greeted them but they didn't respond, although I hadn't expected them to respond. They most likely thought that I was a maid in the house. The Alpha was a rather large looking man who boasted an impressive height, almost as tall as Bernard. His Luna who stood behind him had these sharp features that gave her face a fierce kind of beauty that demanded to be adored.

"What are you doing up here?" Bernard's mother asked.

"Laim sent me back to my room after Alpha Bernard was taken to the Alpha healing wing." I replied.

"What do you mean by your room?" Her nose turned up to me in disgust.

"This is Helen's room, your room is downstairs at the end of the hall." I didn't want to argue with her so I just nodded my head. There was no need to argue with her, at least not in front of her future in-laws. I had more important matters on my mind.

"My apologies, Luna. It will happen again." I bowed my head.

"It better not." She spat.

"Now, pack whatever that belongs to you and get out of this room. Go to the room where you belong." She said to me.

"Yes, Luna." I nodded.

Alisha brought some boxes to help me pack up the clothes that were in the closet and the drawers. I wasn't sure if I was allowed to take anything in the room but Alisha assured me that Bernard bought everything for me.

We packed my things in silence for almost half an hour. Occasionally, Alisha would steal a glance at me but she didn't say a word. Her stares were unnerving especially given the current situation I was in. When I finally had enough, I dropped the pile of shirts I was packing and stared at her.

"What is it, Alisha? You keep looking at me like I have grown a second head or something. It is unnerving and it only adds to my stress and does not take away from it." I said to her.

"I am so sorry." She squeaked and then busied herself with putting away the remaining the things that were still in the closet.

Instantly, I felt bad. Alisha is a gamma and has been treated badly by other wolves in the Pack. She is used to being verbally abused and from the healed marks on her body, I am sure she was used to being physically abused as well.
