Chapter 78: She Is A Sweet Girl

Chapter seventy-eight: She Is A Sweet Girl

Doris

I followed closely behind my brother, I couldn't tell but he was feeling uncomfortable and it was strange to see him like that. When we were far enough from the campsite, he paused and pulled out his dagger and pieces of paper. When I got a closer look, I saw that it wasn't just a blank piece of paper. There was a writing on the paper and what I could make out under the moonlight was that it was his contact information.

"Let us go." He shot a look over his shoulder and he took off leaving me standing there for a little bit.

I took the opportunity to take the dagger and removed his contact information. I didn't need those rogues to be able to reach my brother. He didn't need any more allies in his plan.

"Doris?" He called me.

"I am coming." I hid the dagger in my boot, crumbled up the little piece of paper, and stuffed it in my pocket.

I caught up to him fairly quickly and he was quiet for the majority of our walk back home. I could tell that he was deep in thought and I didn't like it because if he was silent, it meant that he was plotting.

"So, what are you going to do now?" I asked him.

"I will wait, I am a patient man. There is nothing I could do now without the correct information. I need to know why they want Elena so that I know which card to play next."

"What happens if they want her because she is valuable to them? What then?"

"Then I will decide whether she is more valuable to me with them or with me. If I can use her to gain leverage on Bernard then I will do it. But if I find that she is just a loose end that needs to be removed then, I will hand her over on a silver platter."

"They didn't seem very willing to share any kind of information with you. How do you know they will turn around and start sharing their plans with you?" He cast a look over his shoulder.

"They aren't desperate yet but they will get to a point where the injured one will need some form of medical attention and when that happens, they will contact me again. It is only a matter of time, I just need to remain patient."

"Okay." I muttered.

We continued in silence until we crossed the Pack boundaries. I was not sure exactly what time it was but I knew that the sun was due to come up soon.

"I am going back to the Packhouse, if I am not found there when everyone wakes up, people could grow suspicious. You go back home and I will contact you when I need you again." I nodded and started walking in the direction of our house. I stopped when I heard him call after me and I turned around to face him.

"Thank you for coming with me tonight." He sounded so sincere and it sent a small pang to my heart. I nodded and turned back to the direction I was heading in.

A small part of me, a very minuscule part, felt guilty for playing a double agent but then, I quickly reminded myself that Nicholas was trying to take over the pack by either staging a war or killing Bernard. He was all kind of bad and wrong in this whole situation. When my mind returned to sense, I picked up the pace towards my house. Our parents were still out of town, they had extended their trip so I was home alone. I had no one who would question me as to why I was coming home in the dead of night. Technically, it was early in the morning but those were just semantics. I unlocked the back door carefully to avoid all the guards that were on duty. I had kept all the lights off so that everyone would think I was sleeping, I navigated my way through the dark halls and made my way upstairs to my room.

I shut the door immediately. I got inside my room and went to move to switch the light so that I could see. As I turned on the light, I nearly jumped out of my skin when I saw Jasper sitting on my bed.

"Jasper!" I whispered.

"What are you doing in my bedroom?"

"You weren't in your room tonight, where were you?" My heart was still coming down from its initial shock.

"What are you doing in my room in the dark like a literal creeper?" He stood up from the bed with a look of silent anger on his face.

"Where were you?" It looks like he is angry with me.

"Are you mad at me for something, Jasper. If you are, just come out and say what causes it because it feels very unjustified right now."

"I saw you." He seethes.

"I saw you with Nicholas tonight. You left the Pack with him and you went to go and meet with those rogues. The ones that had attacked Bernard."

It all makes sense now, he thought that I was working with Nicholas.

"Jasper, if you followed us tonight then surely you must have seen the part where I took down the paper that my brother had stuck to the tree. That his contact information, he was hoping that the rogues would use it and contact him when they were ready to work with him." His anger drained from his face.

"So you aren't working with him?" I shook my head.

"How could you think like that? My brother wants to take the Pack by forcibly removing Bernard and the Pack would crumble right before our very eyes and I don't want all I have ever known to be destroyed simply because of my brother's greed." He breathed a sigh of relief.

"Okay, that is good because I was struggling to come to terms with the fact that you could have switched up on me."

"I would never do that to you or the Pack, Jasper. You can trust me, I am on your side." He nodded.

"I know and I am sorry. I shouldn't have just raged on you like that. Now, tell me what you found out on your little excursion with Nicholas."

"He is planning to work with the rogues that Bernard fought with. He wanted to find out what they wanted with Elena and once he figures that out, he will then decide what to do with her. That could mean giving them to her if she isn't more valuable to him or even killing her."

"Crap." He turned around and paced around the room.

"What?" I watched him going back and forth. He punched the bridge of his nose and squinted his eyes shut.

"I told him about the rogues wanting Elena but I didn't think that he would do something about it. I feel like I may have just put the poor girl in danger." I placed my hand on his arm to make him stop pacing.

"That wasn't your fault, Elena has been on Nicholas's radar for the longest time now. She seems to be the one variable that he didn't count on and he is obsessed with finding out who she really is. He was even calling Alphas all along the West Coast trying to figure out where she belongs. His obsession with Elena was there even long before you said anything."

"But I am the one who made the connection that those rogues were likely after Elena."

"He would have figured it out eventually. The man is hell bent on uncovering whatever truths that he can about her and if I am being very honest, I want to know who she really is too."

"Why?" I shrugged.

"Wouldn't you want to know why one girl has four rogues after her? What if she is a danger to the Pack?" He shook his head.

"No, I don't think so, otherwise Bernard wouldn't have welcomed her in so easily. There is definitely something about her but I don't think it is anything dangerous or that could put the Pack in jeopardy." I hummed in agreement.

We would just have to wait and see who Elena is, the truth had a way of revealing itself sooner or later. From what I had gathered, Elena was a sweet girl who was just trying to figure out her way. Sure, I had seen it in her face the first time I met her but I was trying to see her character. I had a knack for being able to read people and I didn't get any evil vibes or intentions from her.

"You said you took the paper from the tree, right?" I nodded, pulled out the crumbled paper from my back pocket, and showed him.

"So there is no way those rogues can contact Nicholas?"

"Not that I know of." I replied.

"Good, I will monitor the situation and keep you updated. If you hear anything from Nicholas just let me know. We don't have a personal mind link since we are neither mates, Alphas, or family. So we can't contact each other like that, the Pack mind link is public and anyone would be able to pick up on it. We need to be careful."

"I know, you will talk more when the sun is up. I need to rest and try to get as much sleep as possible.

"Okay, sure." He walked towards the door.

"Goodnight Doris." He said.

"Quick question before you go. How did you get into my room? I had locked the door before I left the house." He smiled sheepishly at me.

"I broke in." He replied.

"Obviously, I know that but I want to know how." He shrugged.

"I unlatched your window from the outside."

"How did you manage to do that?"

"I am part of the Pack's special warriors task force, I know and can do a lot of things I shouldn't know how to do." Then he left my room.

I sometimes forgot just how skilled of a warrior Jasper was. It was his boyish smile and boy next door look that deceived me. Underneath all of that was a highly skilled and lethal warrior.

"Okay then, time for bed." I murmured to myself as I jumped on my bed.
