Chapter 107: The Living Heir
Chapter 107: The Living Heir
Bernard
"Elena's father found the journal that was left behind, he figured out his true lineage. He shared this piece of information with my brother at the annual Alpha summit but my brother thought he was just a madman who was talking out of his ass. Elena's father was probably going to challenge Richard for his rightful position but he found out about it somehow and killed him. He was meant to kill Elena too which is why he had been after her."
I was stunned into silence, I couldn't believe what I just heard. But it all made perfect sense now, I had wondered how an Alpha could be fated to a non-Alpha. It was mostly unheard of. Everything was becoming crystal clear which meant that the danger to Elena was imminent. She was a threat to Richard's claim power and he would stop at nothing to make sure that she ended up in his clutches. I needed to protect her.
"Had I known her name, Bern. I would have told you about what I knew." My mind was going at a million miles an hour.
"No, it is fine, Kaba. At least now I know, I just need to protect my mate. I can't let Richard get his hands on her, she is my life."
"Whatever you need, I am with you all the way."
"Thank you, Kaba. I need to go speak with my mate now. She probably won't believe me at first. I am also worried about how she will take the news. She had wondered for years why Richard would have killed her parents and now she will finally get the answer. I don't know if she will be happy about it or not."
"Just be there for her and allow her to lean into you. Your mate is an Alpha, we bounce back quickly." I hoped he was right.
"Alright, I will speak with you soon. We are going to war, Kaba, and I hope you are ready." He let out a low laugh.
"I have been itching for a fight. I am right there with you."
I hung up the call and leaned back into my chair. If Richard is coming for my mate, then he would have to go through me. I am not a merciful man when those I love are threatened. He will be as good as dead if he dares to cross my line.
I am taking back what rightfully belongs to my mate, I will deliver his head to her on a silver platter. It is time to avenge the death of my in-laws whom I never got to meet.

Elena
'Where are you, my love?' Bernard's voice filled my mind.
'In the garden by the patio.' I replied to him.
I loved that we now shared this mind link, my fingers went to brush against the side of my neck. Whenever I touched the mark, I would feel the heat surge throughout my body.
I loved that we had grown closer than we were, I didn't think it was possible to love him even more than I already did but after the mark, it felt like my love for him had grown multiple times.
I heard him open the sliding doors and his arms came around me from behind. I turned in his embrace and circled my arms around his neck. He felt at home and it was crazy. I always thought home was a place but it turned out to be a person. He kissed me softly.
I knew he was capable of handling whatever came his way but that didn't stop me from worrying. I knew what Richard coming after me meant, my mate was going to protect me. Richard was a calculated and evil man, I knew him well for my past. If he wanted me, he would trample over everyone who tried to stop him from getting me.
I wasn't going to run because I knew I needed to stand with my mate and fight. But I couldn't help the guilt that washed over me when I thought about all the wolves that would stand and fight alongside us. I don't want their blood on my skin.
"What is wrong?" He asked.
"What do you mean?"
"I see it in your face, my love. Something is bothering you." I sighed.
"It's just that I don't want people's blood on my hands. I know Richard is coming, he has been hunting me for years now and he will breach your line in order to get to me and I can't help but feel responsible for whoever will get hurt in all of this." He brushed his fingers against my cheek.
"Listen to me, my love. These wolves want to protect you, they would sacrifice their own lives to see their Luna safe. They fight for you because they love you and have sworn their loyalty to you, even if you told them not to fight, they would still do it for you gladly."
"They barely know me, everyone has known I am your mate for less than 72 hours, they haven't had time to love me yet." He rolled his eyes.
"You have been a member of this Pack for two months now, people noticed you and loved you when you were a gamma. She showed everyone around you kindness, you stood up for those who couldn't stand up for themselves, and you felt like a safe place for many. They love you, Elena."
"I just don't want anyone to get hurt."
"It's war, my love. People will always get hurt or worse killed but we will do our best to try and avoid all of that, okay?" I nodded and rested my head on his shoulder, he held onto me tighter and allowed his warmth to soothe me.
"I love you, you know that right?" I nodded.
"I love you too, it will all be okay. Everything has to work out because I don't know what I will do if it doesn't."
"Speaking of, I wanted to tell you something but I think we need to sit down for this one."
"Why? Did something happen?" He nodded.
"Kind of, it had more to do with you and your past. I think what I am going to tell you will put a lot of things into perspective for you."
He led me to the lounge chairs that were close to the pool. We sat down facing each other, he held my hand in his. He looked down at our hands and then into my eyes with such intensity. It had my heart hammering in my chest.
"Bernard, you are scaring me." I laughed nervously.
"What I am about to tell you may either bring some form of closure or may break your heart even further. But I just want to know that I am here for you." I nodded.
"I put a call to Alpha Kaba because I knew he had some answers concerning Richard, my assumptions were right. Basically, what he told me was that your bloodline is the origin of the Silver Crest Pack. You are the living heir to the Pack."
Time stood still, my eyes bored into his and my heart seemed to slow.
"What?"
"You are the Alpha of the Silver Crest Pack, your bloodline is the rightful ruler of the Pack, that is why Richard is after you. You are the only one that can contest his rule."
This had to be some kind of crazy alternate realm that I had entered into because there was no way what he was saying was true. My parents were Omegas, they were not the Alpha and Luna. My father was an accountant and my mother was a preschool teacher. It didn't get much more average or regular than that. There had to be some kind of mistake.
"I think Alpha Kaba was mistaken, Bernard. There is no way my father had the Alpha gene. He would have told me or my mother."
"Think about it, my love. How often do you hear about a regular wolf or lone wolf being fated to an Alpha? It's almost unheard of."
I guess that part did make sense but there was no way my father was meant to be the Alpha.
"What exactly did Alpha Kaba tell you? Start from the beginning."
He told me everything and I listened carefully. Slowly my mind started piecing things together from that week my parents had died. Now, looking at it from a different perspective, I can see the small sign.
My father had been acting strange the week he was killed. He was always reading this old looking book that he said was a family heirloom. I had asked him to read it but he would always say that it was not to be touched.
I caught him having discussions with my mother often. Every time they would see me enter the room, they would quickly stop all they were saying. I had thought it was because they were planning something special for me but it turned out they were hiding this.
