Chapter 126: Morphine
Chapter 126: Morphine
Bernard
I had been standing in front of Ivory's door for ten minutes just staring. I don't know what to do, I am used to seeing her strong and invincible character. I don't know how I would feel seeing her so broken and vulnerable. I placed my hand on the doorknob and twisted it, I walked into the room with my shoulder tight and heart hammering.
She was hooked up to a different array of machines, her arms were covered in bruises and her usual Rosy cheeks were drained of all colors. She doesn't look like the Ivory I knew. Her eyes fluttered open when she heard me close the door. A strained smile found its way to her lips as she saw me. She looked like she was in so much pain and I didn't know what to do, I felt helpless.
"Hey," she croaked out.
"Imagine the luck."
"Don't talk, I don't want you to strain yourself."
She raised her shaking hand and pointed to the water on the movable tray. I poured some water to drink, and she narrowed her eyes on me, probably upset that I was trying to baby her by giving her the water myself.
"I haven't seen you in a while," her voice was a little bit more clear than before.
"That was all my fault, with Elena's introduction to the Pack and then Richard, I was just so caught up. I didn't have any time to slow down, I was always on the go." She placed her hand on top of mine.
"Hey, you don't have to explain yourself to me. I know the kind of pressure you are under, you have a lot on your plate. I don't have to be one of your top priorities all the time, besides, you are here now."
I still felt crappy for not having seen her all this time, she was one of my closest and trusted friends. She deserves more than just the bare minimum of me.
"How are you feeling?"
"Like I was run over by a two-ton truck. Everything just hurts but they did dope me up pretty good, I am as high as a kite right now."
She attempted to laugh at her own joke but she ended up wincing when her chest rose and fell quickly.
"No more jokes."
"But I am hilarious, it is second nature for me to be funny. You know they call me the discount version of Amy Schumer."
I rolled my eyes but I couldn't help the smile that fought its way to my lips. She had a knack for just bringing joy to situations, she was one of those one-of-a-kind types of people.
"How is Elena?" She removed her hand from mine.
"I saw what she did, she was pretty badass. Are you sure she is not out of your league?"
She was poking at me which was a good sign. I prefer her like this to having her depressed and lifeless.
"She is fine, I can tell that something is bugging her but she just won't speak. I even tried entering her mind but she blocked me out."
"I mean, the girl just killed the man who had been hunting her for ten years, who also happened to kill her parents. And she also found out that she is an Alpha."
"How do you know about that?" Last I remember, I only told my captains and Jasper.
"Elena had a whole little rant on the battlefield, it was quite inspiring." She said it like it was the most obvious thing.
"You should cut her some slack and stop trying to be a damn intrusive. She will talk to you once she is ready, she is probably even trying to understand what is going on in her mind."
Was I being intrusive? The mind link was there for us to understand each other more. I was simply utilizing it by going through her mind even when she pushed back.
"Damn it, I am being intrusive." The realization hit me.
"Yes, you always did have a problem with respecting boundaries, and not because you overstepped maliciously, you just thought you were helping but in actuality, you were making things worse."
My heart sank to my stomach, I had been pressing her too hard. My mind went back to our fight before we came to the hospital, my Alpha male had come out and I treated her like some kind of subordinate. She wasn't second to me, she is my equal.
I may have been the Alpha but she is my Luna, she was the air I filled my lungs with. I needed her to survive. She was not lower than me, if the Pack as a whole were a body and I was the head then Elena is the neck. She supported and kept me rooted and steady, she was the joining glue between the Pack and me. If anything, Elena made this Pack what it is and I was just there.
"I am a horrible mate." She shook her head.
"No, you aren't. You love her with all you have in you, you take care of her and you make sure that the smile on her face stays there. You just need to learn her the same way she needs to learn you. Your mate bond is an advantage but it doesn't pardon you from having to do hard relationship things."
That made perfect sense, Ivory had a way of just knowing what to say, when to say it, and how to say it.
"I am the one who is supposed to be making you feel better, not the other way around." She shrugged.
"You are making me feel better just by being here. I can already feel my kidney healing."
"What did the doctor say? Who is assigned to you? I can get you on Liam's roster if you want."
"No, I have Stella and she is really good. Besides, Liam is working in the ICU, they need him more than I do."
Ivory was one of the most powerful characters that would put people on fire whilst being on fire herself. She was selfless and kind, it was one of the many reasons why I had been so drawn to her since childhood. Her radiance was addictive.
"So, what did Stella say?"
"Well," she bit down on her lips.
"My left kidney is shot or was it my right, whichever one it was, it is not working anymore. I had a little bit of fluid in my lungs but they drained that. She placed me on some medicine."
"Are you in any pain?" She shook her head.
"I mean, there is pain but it is not anything I can't handle."
"You don't have to be strong right now, Ivory. Take the pain relief, it will help you heal faster."
"I am not trying to be strong, I am strong." She laughed at her own joke.
"Okay, maybe a little morphine wouldn't kill anyone."
'Liam, please send someone to Ivory's room with some morphine.' I mind linked him.
"So, how are you? Richard is dead and his Pack is going to need to go somewhere."
"Yes," I scratched the back of my neck.
"Elena and I need to figure all of that out because right now, I don't know what exactly she wants to do with her old Pack."
"I understand, I actually forgot to congratulate you. I heard you are engaged to Elena now, you really aren't waiting around, are you?" I smiled.
"Why should I? She is my mate and we are going to be together for the rest of our lives and even beyond that. I want to be connected to her in every way possible." She smiled a little bit.
"Bernard Joseph, you naughty boy. Have you guys done it?"
I could feel the heat rushing to my face, I never blushed but somehow she managed to get things out of me that others could never.
"No, Ivory, she wants to go about things in a transitional way."
"How is that going for you?" She laughed playfully.
"I am struggling." I laughed nervously.
"But I will do anything for her, I would buy her the world if she asked me to."
"Then you would be broke, at least she is not in it for the money." She teased.
A nurse walked into the room with a tray that had a syringe and a small bottle of morphine.
"Alpha," the nurse bowed.
Her eyes cut to Ivory's for a moment and I swear I saw something flicker in them but that was probably my imagination.
"I have the morphine as requested." I nodded.
"I will let you rest, I need to go and see some of the other patients. If you need anything, call someone to come and get me, okay?"
She gave me a thumbs up as the nurse pushed the morphine into her drip. Her eyes slowly began to flutter closed and I knew that was my cue to leave.
It is now time to return to my mate's side where I belonged.
