I chose to work from home today because I knew if I ran into Nicholas, I would do something I would regret. I need to keep my cool. To say I didn't feel massively betrayed would have been a lie. I knew Nicholas, we weren't friends but I had trusted him to be my Beta, he had gone and done this just to become the Alpha I knew he was an ambitious man, but this just took care of.
Nicholas wasn't a true Beta, he had been chosen. The position had been given to him, he wasn't born with the gene. He didn't have those natural instincts of loyalty to me, unlike Liam. It was moments like these that I wished that Liam had accepted his position. I trusted him with my life, I knew that there was no chance of him ever doing what Nicholas was trying to do to me.
If it hadn't been for Elena, I would have probably killed him by now. I had given this man everything he ever had, it was me who pulled the strings to get him the captain position as a warrior. It was me who chose him to be Beta and now I am regretting my decision. I should have chosen someone else, someone more trustworthy and worthy of the position. Someone who the Pack not only loved but respected.
Truth be told, no one liked Nicholas in the Pack, they only feared him more than anything else. He would always quote Machiavelli when he said, it is better to be feared than to be loved. He always thought that I should have ruled with an iron fist but that wasn't leadership. I wanted to be a servant leader, I may have been the Alpha of the Pack, I am there to serve my people but Nicholas didn't understand that.
I was waiting for Doris to come so that she could tell me everything she knew. I sent it to her after Elena told me everything. I needed to understand what exactly was going on with her brother, she was the best person to ask. I heard a knock sound at my door.
"Come in." I replied, placing my documents down. Doris walked into my office and bowed her head in greeting.
"Alpha."
"Doris, please sit." I leaned back into my chair.
She sat down on the opposite side of the desk, I could practically hear her heart hammering in her chest from what I sat. She is nervous. She looked at me and waited expectantly, her hands were clutching the armrest of the leather chair. She was on edge, over the years, I had gotten very good at observing, and from what I could see, she was highly troubled.
"Do you know why I called you?" She nodded slowly.
"I presume it has something to do with my brother. You know, don't you?" I nodded.
I knew she was talking about Nicholas otherwise she wouldn't have looked so nervous, she had no reason to. From what Elena had told me, she could be trusted. Nicholas was the one who couldn't be trusted.
"I am sorry, Alpha." She hung her head in shame.
"I don't understand why Nicholas would do such a thing to you or this Pack. You have done so much for him and my family over the years."
"You have nothing to apologize for, you're not the one trying to kill me." She winced at my words and then nodded.
"So tell me what your brother is planning to do and how exactly he believes he will take over my pack."
I was trying very hard to keep my wolf from surfacing, I could feel him pacing within me. He wanted blood and without Elena here right now, I don't have an anchor to settle me. She was the only thing that could calm me when I was on the brink.
"He has enlisted the help of Alpha Ronald and Alpha Richard to help him to ambush the Pack and force you into relinquishing power. As you know, the only way he can assume the position of Alpha is through battle, the elders vote you out or you are exiled by the Pack itself." I nodded.
"He doesn't want to kill you because he believes that he will lose the favor of many of the Pack members if he does that because they love you." She looked around my office a little nervous.
"So, he will try to win the elders over. He will try and plant seeds of doubt to get them to vote you out so he can take the position."
I balled my fists struggling to control myself now, how could he do this to me?
"And what exactly will Ronald get out of this? Richard will get Elena, who he has been after for years. What will Ronald benefit from all of these?"
Nicholas will mate with Helen and she will become the new Luna. This way she will still get the position she was originally promised and Ronald can get his revenge on you."
I was still struggling to hold myself now, I could feel my wolf clawing to the surface. She stared at me with weary eyes, she could see my struggling to hold on as well.
"Alpha….." her voice trailed off as she stood up slowly from her seat.
I closed my eyes trying to force my wolf back but he was fighting me. He wanted Nicholas's head, he hated being challenged. He wanted to put Nicholas in his place. I heard the door to my office open and I assumed it was Doris making a swift getaway. Then I felt her, my mate. Her fingers threaded through mine and she sat down on my lap.
"It is okay." She leaned her forehead against mine.
"Calm down, Bern. Breathe with me." She placed her free hand on my chest.
"In, out." I did as she ordered.
We repeated that another three times before my wolf backed down and fell into the background. She cupped my face and then I opened my eyes, I came in contact with those beautiful blue eyes that had my heart, I felt my entire world stopped.
"I felt you, I was worried something had happened." She whispered, staring into my eyes, I shook my head.
"Thank you." She leaned forward and kissed my lips sweetly. She then looked over her shoulder and saw Doris who was staring at us in wonder.
"Hey, Doris." She greeted her with an easy smile.
Doris could only manage a simple wave, she then turned her attention back to me.
"What happened?"
I told her everything, I watched my mate's face drain all colors. I knew she was worried about my safety, I would be fine. Nicholas is the one to worry about because I knew if I saw him, I was going to kill him.
"So, what will you do?"
"I want to kill him." I looked at Doris when I said those words, I saw her wince but she remained silent.
"But I won, for now, I will place him in prison until I can get answers out of him. I allowed this man into my inner circle and he has taken advantage of my trust, he has committed treason by formulating this plan. He will get his punishment and everything he deserves." I looked at Doris again.
"Get Jasper for me and tell him to meet me in the courtyard. This will be a public arrest and I want people to see how shameful their Beta is. Tell Jasper to bring three guards that will escort him to the cells." She stood up from her chair and bowed her head.
"Yes, Alpha." She turned on her heels and left my office.
"Do you want me to come with you?" Elena looked at me worriedly. I shook my head.
"No, I would much rather you stay in this house, my love. I need you safe and sound."
Thankfully, she didn't try to fight me on this. I left my office a few minutes later and headed to the courtyard.
'Meet me in the courtyard, there is some business we need to deal with.' I mind linked Nicholas.
'Yes, Alpha.' he responded.
I wanted nothing more than to chew him out but I held myself back. My time would come.
