Chapter 170: Bernard, Am Coming

Chapter 170: Bernard, Am Coming

Nicholas

The air still smelled the same, it smelt like home. I breathed it in, relishing in the scent. I had been away for what had felt like years but being back here felt like I had never left.

Bernard had been stupid to think that I would take defeat just like that, I am Nicholas Mark, I am not a man who lost easily or quietly. I allowed him to think that he had gotten me but I was just laying in wait. You see, that is what the true Alpha did. We didn't make brash and rash decisions, we thought it out carefully. I will admit I needed some time to lick my wounds and gain my strength back, I didn't know what my next plan would be but I knew that it would all come to me if I was patient

Patience had gotten me far in life and if it hadn't been for my snitch of a sister, it would have gotten me the Crescent Wolf Pack. My wolf growled at the thought of that backstabbing wench, I had trusted her. I had believed that she had truly wanted me to win but all the while, she had played me like a damn fool.

I wanted not only to kill Bernard's precious little mate but I am here to get my revenge. My wolf was angry and so was I, we demanded justice and justice would soon be served. I only needed to wait for the perfect moment. I was not all thrilled to be doing Ronald's dirty work but this was a necessary step that I had to take towards my ultimate goal. I needed this mark removed and the only one who could do that was Bernard. Once it was removed, I would be a free man once more.

I watched from behind the tree line counting the number of wolves I had seen on patrol so far, I had counted four wolves on this eastern border. They had changed the protocols, damn it. The plan got a little more complicated after this realization. It would take me weeks to calculate how they move, they could also have wolves further inside the forest creating a second perimeter. This was all Jasper's doing, I am sure of that.

I hated that man but I had to admit that when it came to defensive maneuvers, he is a genius. I would be lying if I said I hadn't copied his style when making my border patrol protocols, it was part of the reason he hated me so much. I had taken some of his ideas and called them mine. Did I care? No.

I watched as the wolves switched positions and began new paths. I needed to get a better vantage point, so I extracted my claws from my nails and started climbing up the tree. Within five seconds, I was at the top of the large fur tree, the leaves were so thick that I was completely hidden. My initial thoughts had been right, they had formed a second perimeter past the forest line. They were moving in a clockwise formation which meant that no intruder could bypass them. They were locked in an air-tight.

From what I could see, no one could get into the pack unless they had an inside link to the Pack which just so happened I had no link to the Pack. I had not been the best at making friends, probably because I hated people. I was about to descend the tree when I noticed something in the distance. I saw two wolves that looked oddly familiar lurking just beyond the border under the cover of the tall grass. They were watching the patrol wolves as well.

"Well, well, well." I whispered.

"Who do we have here?"

I focused my eyes on the two wolves, and that's when I noticed the gray wolf had a black stripe down its center, that was the wolf from the forest, and next to him was the wolf I presumed to be Mathew. Although I had not been present at the battle, I had been informed by some of the warriors in Ronald's Pack who was who. According to them, the battle was one of the most humiliating defeats they had to endure in their life.

If they were lurking by the borders, then it meant that they too were after something. I am willing to bet my wolf that they wanted Elena lifeless at their feet. She had killed their fearless leader who had been undefeated for decades. Yet this young girl came up from nowhere and took him to the ground. They were disgraced and angry, Silver Crest Pack's reputation perished and the fear they had on the region was no more. They had lost their street cred and it looked like the only way they saw to get it back was by killing the problem. I could have left it for them to go at it, they would kill Elena for me and I wouldn't need to get my hands dirty but then I would run the risk of them killing Bernard too and I needed him alive.

"Damn it." I descended the tree and landed on the ground. I needed to move quickly and efficiently. I needed to find a way in and I needed to do it soon.

I pulled out the little burner phone that Ronald had given me, I dialed the only number that was on the phone and waited. He picked up on the first ring.

"Can you breach his defense?" He asked.

"Hello, Ronald. How are you?"

"We aren't friends, Nicholas. This is all strictly business. You help me and I help you, I don't need to know how you are. What I care about is whether or not my daughter will have what her heart desires most when she wakes up."

"Yes, it is not like I am risking my life trying to get your daughter, the man who has repeatedly said that he doesn't want her."

"Watch yourself, Nicholas." He growled.

"Now tell me what the status is."

"Well," I began.

"We do have a bit of a problem. They have changed the protocols to ones I am not familiar with."

"Shit, so you can't breathe defense?"

"I never said that, I can breach it but I will need time or a distraction of some kind. Luckily I feel that distraction will come sooner rather than later. I spotted Mathew lurking by the borders of the Pack."

"Mathew? As in the second to Richard? He is still alive?"

"Alive and kicking, it looks like they are here for revenge which means that they are here to kill Elena."

"Well then, that's great! They can do the work for us." This man is truly a fool.

"No, Ronald. We can't allow them to kill Elena because if they are close enough to kill her, it will mean they are close enough to kill Bernard which they will not hesitate to do. Killing an Alpha gives you the right to their land and Pack or have you forgotten some of our most sacred laws?" He was quiet.

"If Mathew kills Elena, he will become the rightful Alpha of the Silver Crest Pack and if he also manages to kill Bernard, he will have two powerful Packs at his disposal. You will have no mate for your daughter and my one chance to get this mark removed will be gone." I heard him groan on the other side of the phone.

"So what do we do now?"

"I will study the new protocols and then after that, I will find a weak point. No matter how good a defense is, there is always a weak point somewhere within the walls. I will find it, and then I will exploit it to get what I need. No need to worry."

He was silent for a moment, the only sound that could be heard was his heavy breathing on the line.

"Am I stupid for trusting you?"

"Yes," I replied instantly.

"I am not a man who should be easily trusted but I am also the only person who can help you and your family right now." He was quiet.

Anyone who trusted me was stupid for doing so because I was a selfish man who looked only after himself. If I saw that staying loyal to you didn't benefit me in any way, shape, or form, I would stab you in the back without hesitation and I had no normal code on that one. That was the reason why I didn't trust anyone and I was kicking myself now that I had been stupid enough to trust my sister.

"You are right but I too, am your only hope in getting that mark removed. So don't screw me over, Nicholas and I won't screw you over. It is as simple as that."

"You may not trust me but you do have my word. I will not screw you over, this is beneficial to me as well. So, therefore, it is important to me."

"Good," he breathed.

"Helen is showing signs of waking up and I need this plan to follow through within the next coming weeks. Can it be done?"

"It can, I am racing against Mathew and I need to make sure I breach these walks before he does."

"May the moon goddess be with you." He hung up the call.

"Moon goddess?" I scoffed, that woman had done nothing for me.

Every success I had I didn't owe to a figure floating in the sky, I owed it to myself. I had worked hard and clawed my way out of the trenches. Just like before, there would be no intervention by the moon goddess. It would just be me and my survival skills that would see me through this.

I looked at the tree line, watching the wolves once again. I would find their weak point in due time.

"Bernard, I am coming." I murmured.
