Chapter 93: I Can't Let Him Succeed

Chapter ninety-three: I Can't Let Him Succeed

Doris

This is bad, this was all so bad. I thought I had done enough to keep Nicholas's plan from succeeding but now he is close to completing his plan. How had I let this happen? I had kept such a careful eye on him yet I didn't know he had been talking to other Alphas.

I had been praying that he wouldn't have found an out, that he would hit brick wall after brick wall but somehow he had managed to find his breakthrough.

"So, how do you plan on capturing Elena?" I needed to know more of his plan if I had any chance of stopping him.

"I will wait until after I speak to Richard. Bernard is preoccupied but I bet with the current rumors circulating about Elena and Jack, he would want nothing to do with her. He has been miserable and moping around his house for some days now."

That is true, rumors had been circulating about Elena and Jack but l didn't buy them. Something fishy was going on there and I would find out what it was myself.

"Do you need any help?" He nodded.

"I need you to keep an eye on Elena and see if you can draw any information out of her. Women tend to share things a lot when they are depressed and I am certain her mood is mirroring Bernard's."

"Okay, I can do that. What are you going to do right now?"

"I need to make sure that all my other plans are still placed correctly. I need to make a few calls, you go to Elena and let me know what you find out. We will meet back here at sunset."

He didn't wait for me to reply, he bolted out of my room and didn't even bother to close the door. The fact that he was this happy only intensified the anxiety within me. Nicholas doesn't get happy. I needed to find Jasper and I let him know.

As I was getting up from my bed, I thought better of it. Jasper wouldn't be able to do anything, he had no power over Nicholas. The only person who could do something was the one who was directly affected, Bernard. I needed to speak to him and let him know everything that was going on. I put my shoes on, and made my way downstairs. I knew Nicholas hadn't left the house because I didn't hear the front door or back door open and close. When I got to the bottom step, I called out to him.

"Nicholas, I am leaving now. I will see you back here at sunset."

He didn't answer but I knew he heard me. I made my way out of the house and headed in the direction of the gamma's house just in case Nicholas was looking my way. The office was on the other side of the house but I couldn't be too careful with my brother. I walked a little further before I disappeared by a corner and then stared in the direction of Bernard's house. I picked up my pace to a jog because I was too impatient. What I had to tell him was life and death, the secret that I had carried around for too long. I should have just told him when I had first heard about my brother's plan but evidence would be demanded.

By the time I reached his house, I was panting. I doubled over and placed my hand on my knees. I composed myself and walked up to the door and twisted the knob but I found it locked. That was strange, Bernard never locked his door. I peeked through the window in hopes of seeing him downstairs but there was no one there. What I could see were empty beer cans and empty packages of food sprawled out everywhere in the living room.

"The rumors." The realization came to me.

Nicholas had said that Bernard had been moping around, I hadn't taken him seriously but now I am starting to think he had been right. I pulled out my phone and dialed his number. It rang and rang but still no answer, I tried the number again but this time he answered after the third ring.

"What do you want?"

"Bernard?" I called him.

"Doris?" He was gruff and thick like he had been sleeping. It was nearly eleven o'clock in the morning, something was seriously wrong.

"Can you let me in, please? I need to talk to you, it is very urgent." He groaned.

"I am on leave, whatever it is, take it to Nicholas."

"I can't." He sounded like he was checked out already.

"Look, I just need fifteen minutes of your time and then I am out of here. Please, you know I wouldn't pester you if it wasn't important." He was silent for a moment before I heard ruffling.

"Okay, I am coming.

"Thank you." I hung up the call and waited.

It took him five minutes to get from his bed to the door. When he opened the door, I thought I was staring at a stranger and not the guy I had known for years and looked up to like a brother. He hadn't shaved and his beard was growing in. His hair was uncombed and unkempt, he smelled like he hadn't bathed for days and had been rolling around on the floor of a bar.

"Come in." He turned away from the door and headed to the kitchen.

I followed him closely behind, I made sure to close and lock the door just in case Nicholas decided to make an appearance here. If I had thought the living room looked horrendous, his kitchen had beaten it out. There were empty takeaway boxes left lying around, empty beer cans, and empty bottles of water all over the counter. How has it been living like this? I had been in here only two minutes and my eyes felt like they were watering. He walked over to the fridge and pulled out a beer and opened it. He guzzled the can down and then turned to me, I looked at him horrified.

"It is eleven o'clock on Wednesday morning, Bernard." He shrugged.

"It is five in the evening somewhere. Now tell me what you have to say. I don't have all day, I have a busy day ahead of me."

Sure he did, he had an appointment with beer cans and cheap takeout. He was spiraling but what I had to say took priority over that. He needed to do something about Nicholas.

"Nicholas is planning to take over the Pack and you need to stop him before he follows through with his plan. You will lose the Pack and your life." He stared at me and blinked twice before he took another sip of his beer.

"You know what, that doesn't make sense?"

"Why is Nicholas part of everyone's problems?" I hadn't expected him to say that.

"First with Elena and now you. He is in the middle of all our problems. But I had tried to do right by her, you know? I wanted to protect her honor but she wouldn't let me."

"Bernard, what are you talking about? Did you even hear what I just said to you? I am telling you that Nicholas is trying to take over the Pack and you aren't reacting how you should be." He guzzled the rest of his beer down, hiccuping when he finished the last few drops. He was drunk, this is not going to do me any good.

"Bernard, look I know you are upset about the rumors of Elena and Jack but….." he threw his can across the kitchen, causing me to flinch.

"Don't say that name here." He seethed.

"I don't want to hear his name uttered in my house." He was not in his right sense now.

"Get out." He commanded.

"I want to be left alone."

"Bernard, I don't think that's a very wise idea. Look, I know you are hurting but you are the Alpha of this Pack. If you don't do something about this mess that Nicholas is creating, you will lose your title." He huffed and turned around to open the fridge once more.

"He is going to contact Richard and align himself with him, so they can take you down." He didn't even look back as he rummaged through the fridge.

"He will kill Elena!" He stilled.

He cast a look over his shoulder at me, I stared into his eyes and saw nothing. They were dead and detached, whoever had been behind them was dead now. He then looked away and continued rummaging through the fridge. Talking to him while he was in this state was pointless. Whatever I said would pass right through him, he was not fully coherent right now.

I walked out of his house having decided exactly what I needed to do next. The Pack is in danger and Bernard is useless in this state. I needed to get someone who would be able to get through to him and I knew just one person.

I needed Elena, she was my last hope. I only prayed that she could get through to Bernard.
