Chapter 92: Moment Of Desperation
Chapter ninety-two: Moment Of Desperation
Nicholas
It had been five bloody days since I left my contact details on the tree for those stupid rogues and not once did they contact me. To be honest, it had been a desperate ploy on my part thinking that I could actually work with rogues but I was in a moment of desperation.
Elena is constantly in my head, especially after our encounter a few days ago, she had gotten even more under my skin. She had wanted us to be civil and find a middle ground. I scoffed, she wanted me to lower myself down to her level. But it wasn't just that pissed me off, it was the fact that she had said it would be in both our interests.
Liam and I weren't friends but that had never bothered Bernard. I knew how to handle myself around him and Liam also knew how to handle himself around me. There was no need for me to worry about Liam because he was a variable that I understood but Elena was not. She was that one anomaly that didn't make sense.
I tried to scare her away but that only rooted her more in the Pack. I had tried to get Bernard to see the problem she could impose but that only made him draw closer to her. I had even tried aligning myself with the rogues that were after her but even they refused to work with me. I am running out of options and how I found myself in my father's office again dialing Alpha's numbers. This is my last chance, someone had to know something about this girl. There was no way she had just appeared from thin air. She had a past which meant she had a home, I just needed to find out where it was.
I had just gotten off a call with some Alphas and no one knew this girl and no one was missing from their Pack. I had a few more Alphas to call but I was slowly beginning to lose hope. It looked like a hostile takeover was looking more like a plan A than it was a last resort.
I punched in Alpha Kaba's number, he was a close friend of Bernard's and I am sure that if he knew something, he would tell me seeing as I am Bernard's Beta. He answered the call on the second ring.
"Hello?"
"Good morning, Alpha Kaba. This is Nicholas Mark, Bernard's Beta."
"Ah yes, I remembered you. How can I help you, Nicholas?"
"I am calling to ask if you are missing a Pack member by chance. Her name is Elena, she is in her early twenties. She had fiery red hair and sapphire coloured eyes."
"I don't have any missing pack members. We recently went over the headcount a few weeks ago. When did you find Elena?"
"About two months ago. She stumbled into our Pack and the poor thing hit her head and can't remember anything past her name. So, we are trying to help her find her way back home. This is why I am calling every Alpha to see if they are looking for her."
"I am sorry Nicholas but all my wolves are accounted for. I will ask around and see if any of the other Alphas are missing wolves but I highly doubt it." Damn it, I am running out of options.
"Thank you, Alpha Kaba."
"Wait." He muttered.
"Before you go, I wanted to ask if Bernard had made any headway with those rogues."
"Excuse me?"
"I called him a few days ago and told him that my scouts had spotted some rogues lingering outside his territory. He informed me that those were the same rogue who had attacked him, I just wanted to find out if you guys made any headway."
So Bernard had decided to keep this conversation away from me. I wondered why.
"We are still looking into it, Alpha Kaba." I lied.
"Have your scouts seen or heard anything else?"
"No, we haven't spotted them for a while now but I know they are still somewhere out there. I did hear that those wolves were trackers for Alpha Richard but I am not too sure how far true that was. I am going to call him later today to ask why he would have trackers near my territory."
This is very interesting, this is what I have been missing. Suddenly everything started looking up for me. This is the missing link that would help tie all of this together.
"If we hear anything from Alpha Richard, I will be sure to inform you. You have a good day now."
I didn't wait for him to reply, I just hung up the call. This was what I had been looking for. I looked up to the ceiling and breathed a sigh of relief. I couldn't believe that this was happening. Now, I just needed to make sense of it all. There were many different puzzle pieces that I needed to put together to formulate the picture.
The wolves I had initially thought were rogues were actually trackers that belonged to Alpha Richard's Pack. Those wolves had been after Elena since the night she trespassed into our lands. They had been waiting patiently outside the Pack lines for her to cross the border again. This solidified my initial idea that the wolves wanted Elena for something and since those wolves worked for Alpha Richard, that means he wanted her for something but what he wanted her for is what I didn't know.
This also means that Elena had been running for Richard which led me to believe that she actually belonged to Richard's Pack. Otherwise, why would she run from him? And if she had been from a Pack other than Richard's why wouldn't she run back to them for safety. This was where her story started, Richard's Pack. He had the answer I needed and I happened to have something he wanted. This is the leverage that I knew I could use to get Richard to work with me. I had only had a few encounters with him and to say he was not a good man was an understatement. There was a rumor that said when he found his mate, he had locked her up because she served only as a distraction to his work.
There were very few people in this world that I respected and Richard was one of those people. He is a man who knew what he wanted and stopped at nothing to get it. We had that one trait in common, we were resilient. It also helped with the fact that Richard disliked Bernard. I remembered that they had almost gotten into it at the annual Alpha's summit. Bernard had passed some snarky remark that had Richard flipping tables to get to where Bernard stood. It was then decided that both of them could not sit within twenty feet of each other. This is what made the possibility of teaming up with him that much easier.
Richard was better as an ally than an enemy. Many wolves could attest to that. His lack was only one that could even come close to the strength and skill of our warriors and trackers. I needed to contact him but not before I consulted with my sister. Finally, my plan is about to come to fruition.
I stood up from my father's desk and walked towards the stairs heading to my Doris's room. I know she was here because I heard her switching off the water in the shower when I arrived. I took the steps two at a time, I couldn't remember the last time I had been this genuinely happy and excited about something. For years, I had planned and waited. I stopped at her door and knocked.
"Come in." Her muffin voice said from the other side of the room.
I walked into her room, her eyes lifted from the book she was buried in. When she looked at my face, she stared at me strangely and I couldn't blame her. I rarely smiled and when I did it was always forced on people I despised.
"What happened? Why do you look like that?"
"Well, dear sister." I clapped my hands together.
"Looks like my plan is finally coming to fruition. The gods have smiled upon me and have shined favor on your dear brother."
"What are you talking about, Nicholas?" I let out a soft chuckle.
"I have just found my breakthrough moment. I know where Elena came from."
"What? How did you find out? Did you speak to the rogues again?" I clicked my tongue on the roof of my mouth in displeasure.
"Those rogues were useless but it turns out they aren't rogues. They belong to Richard's Pack, they are trackers who have been sent after Elena."
"And how do you know all of this?"
"Alpha Kaba, he told me about the wolves, then I started putting everything together myself. Sister, it is only a matter of time before I take over this Pack. Now that I know Richard is looking for Elena, I am going to use that as leverage. Richard will help me take over the Pack and he will get Elena back, a win-win for everyone." She let go of a heavy breath.
"Wow, congratulations brother. So what now?"
"I will contact Richard soon but for now I need to figure out how I am going to get Elena away from Bernard."
Finally, all my plans were coming together. I could hardly believe it, a few hours ago everything looked so bleak but now everything had fallen into place.
