Chapter 152: First Official Duty

Chapter 152: First Official Duty

Elena

We were getting things ready to go back to the Pack, the weeks away had been so blissful. We were just alone which was rare, in the Pack, someone was always there either Jasper, Liam, Alisha, or any other Pack members that needed our help.

"I don't want to go back." I whined, he brought my hand to his lips and kissed it.

"I don't want to go either, my love but the Pack needs us. We have been gone for too long now, there is a lot to do with the new Pack members that are still integrating."

He was right but I didn't like the fact that we are actually going back.

"I know," l sulked.

"We will come back soon enough." He turned his attention back on the road, I wanted him to drive slower so the reality wouldn't come as quickly but he was already doing the speed limit.

I pulled out my phone to check the message I got from Alisha. I had made her my assistant, and Elizabeth suggested that. She had told me that the role of Luna was not an easy one to carry and I would need my own version of a Beta. Alisha is someone I trusted with my life, I knew that she was also hardworking and would pour her heart and soul into the job.

I scrolled through my Monday agenda, looking at it just gave me a headache. I had a meeting with the heads of the doctors, then I had a meeting with the women's society counsel. Then I needed to meet with Elizabeth for lunch and after that, I also had a meeting with the school's heads. I had thought maybe they would start me off but they were just throwing me straight into the deep end hoping I would swim.

"Is it too late to run away and become a rogue again?" I looked at my husband in all seriousness, his lips curved into a smirk.

"Afraid not, my love. This is your life now. You are stuck with me and I am never letting you go."

This is the life I had been chosen for and I would do it to the best of my capabilities. I hadn't even been home for more than twenty minutes before Jasper and Alisha barged in through the front door to the kitchen where Bernard and I were talking.

"Alpha, Luna." They inclined their heads.

"Jasper?" Bernard looked at his Beta.

"I trust the ship moved smoothly while I was away?" He nodded.
"Everything is exactly as it should be, we have to go and meet the new initiates for the warrior's program. We were meant to be there ten minutes ago."

"Sorry," Bernard's eyes moved to mine.

"Time seems to run away from me when I am with my wife."

His words sent flutters to my stomach, his green eyes bored into mine and I knew where his mind was. The cabin, the late nights spent not talking, and the early morning wake-up calls that had my heart racing. I wished more than anything we could have been alone. He stood up from his chair and kissed my lips softly.

"I will see you for dinner, my love." I was rendered speechless, I could only just nod.

He left with Jasper leaving only me and Alisha in the kitchen. After I composed myself, I turned to Alisha and stood when I noticed her giving me a strange look.

"What?"

"You are glowing, Luna." She smirked.

"It is the glow that comes when your mate satisfies you." The blush that rose to my cheeks was unmistakable.

"Okay, we aren't talking about that, didn't you say you had something for me?" I needed to change the topic very fast.

She handed me the folder in her hands, I opened it still trying to avoid her knowing gaze. I knew everyone knew what we would do on our honeymoon but that didn't mean that I wanted to talk about it. That was something between Bernard and I and I wanted it to stay like that. I looked at the content in the folder and frowned.

"What is this for?" She came to stand beside me.

"These are the charts that show the satisfaction of students at night school and middle school."

"Why are the ratings so low?"

"I am not sure, that's why the principals have arranged a meeting with you at the end of the day."

"Okay, that's fine. So where are you headed right now?"

"First, we will have a meeting with the heads of the doctors."

"Liam?" She nodded.

"He is one of the head doctors but he does have two deputies who also act as heads. They are expecting us in the next fifteen minutes." I stood from my seat and grabbed my coffee mug.

"Okay, let's go."

This is my first official duty as Luna and I hoped that I could live up to the expectations everyone had placed on me, including myself.

When we arrived at the hospital, Liam and two other doctors I had not met before were there to greet us at the door.

"Luna," they greeted.

"Good morning," I smiled.

"Please, lead the way."

Liam led the way to his office, which was situated on the ground floor. The office had its own mini boardroom table that allowed all of us to sit comfortably in our seats.

"We want to show you some of the reports we found on the integrators. But I must warn you that some of the things that we are about to show are not pleasant." Liam slid a folder my way.

I opened it to reveal the files of all of the wolves that had moved from Richard's Pack to ours. My stomach churned with each patient's record I read. They had sustained injuries from the battle but some of them had previous injuries that had not healed properly. They had broken bones that weren't correctly healed, and some were missing ribs, which led to part of their abdomen being exposed.

"What do you mean when you say they are chipped?"

Liam and the two other doctors looked at each other, unsure of who should speak first. From the looks on their faces, I knew I wasn't going to like whatever was about to come out of their mouths. Liam cleared his throat and stared at me.

"Richard placed chips inside each of the wolves, they are essentially like internal shock collars, they emit an electrical pulse throughout the body which is supposed to stop the heart of the host." Alisha gasped.

"When we asked them about it, they said that they were put into them so that they never strayed from protocol. They remained malleable enough for Richard to use, I was designed to keep them in line."

I felt the bile rise in my throat, this is so disgusting. Not only had Richard been a cruel leader but he had reverted to such measures to keep people from escaping to freedom. With each passing day, I became more grateful that he was dead now.

"Have you been able to remove them?" Liam shook his head.

"The chips are bonded to their nervous system. We were able to deactivate it but the only problem is we don't want to leave it in their bodies as it could cause infection or it could leak toxic chemicals into their bloodstream.

"So what do we do? How can I help?"

"There is a machine that could help us to safely remove the chips but it does cost an arm and a leg. I can give you the number and you talk to the Alpha and see if….."

"No need." I cut him off.

"We will pay whatever needs to be paid for, these people deserve a fair shot at freedom, and removing that chip will ensure that." Liam looked a little skeptical.

"Are you sure you don't want to run the number first and then check with Bernard?"

"Liam, I am Luna now and I am telling you to order it. These are people's lives we are talking about here. It is my job as Luna to stand by my people and I am doing just that."

"Okay, thank you, Luna."

I stood from my seat and shook each of their hands, I felt my chest lift a little. I had just given my first official order as Luna, it felt good to help people.

"I will check in with you people in a few days to see how everything turns out." I exited the room with Alisha, today will be a good day and I can feel it already.

After a few meetings with the heads of departments in the hospital center, I was already hungry and in need of food.

"We are meeting Elizabeth for lunch at the bistro in the town center. We have one of the drivers waiting already."

I walked out of the hospital feeling a little tired, so I got into the car. I loved the fact that I was helping so many people but I also hated the fact that I was away from my husband. We just got married and we were meant to be on top of each other. His mind was blocked which meant that he was probably still in a meeting or was at the training. But, Bernard rarely blocked me from the mind link, I reached for my phone and sent him a text.

'l miss you.' I sent it, I knew he wouldn't respond right away but I just had to let him know.

'I miss you more,' his response was almost instant.

I was about to type something else but then my phone started buzzing. His name flashed across my screen and I nearly squealed from excitement.

"Hi," I picked up the call.

"Is this my wife speaking?"

"Yes," I could hear the smile in his voice. The fatigue had suddenly left me and I was wide awake.

"So, how is the first day going?"

"Truthfully, I am tired already but I love helping people." I blew out a tired breath.

"On the bright side, I just signed off on this machine that Liam wants to buy to help with the integrators."

He was silent and I looked at my phone to make sure that he was still on the receiving end.

"Bernard?"

"Elena," he sighed.

"You can't just sign off on things without informing me about it."

"I thought you would be happy about this? It is for the good of the people, I didn't even think twice about it."

"Exactly, that's the problem. When it comes to these money issues, let me handle it, my love." I heard someone calling his name in the distance.

"Look, I need to go, I will tell Liam to reverse the order and I will take a look at the papers when I get home." He hung up the call before I could even say anything else.

"What happened?" Alisha looked at my face.

"Nothing."

I stared out the window, I thought that I was doing the right thing, I thought he would have been happy about what I did but I was wrong, I felt horrible.
