Humble Servant

Adea
“Luna,” the man said respectfully.
His voice is low and there’s an allure to it, something about it draws me to him. I want to turn around and look at him, but I refuse to. I wanted to laugh because respect was the last thing I thought I would receive at Crimson Pack. I folded my arms in front of me and focused on the irritation I felt crawling up my neck.
I turned on my heel and came face-to-face with the visitor. My lips parted and my body relaxed as my eyes landed on him. He was breathtakingly beautiful and if my heart had not already belonged to another man it would have skipped a beat. I raised my chin, closed my mouth, and threw daggers at him with my eyes.
Long blonde hair brushed back from his face, sharp features, a jawline that could cut glass and the bluest eyes I’ve ever seen. He was strong, his shoulders broad, but his eyes were kind and gentle. I wouldn’t be fooled by a friendly face, no matter how pretty it was. A silver necklace dropped beneath the material and hid beneath his shirt. He wore a linen long-sleeve shirt with ruffles that was tucked into black breeches with gold buttons. His black stockings were held up with ribbon garters.
My guest was put together and had an air of authority about him. I didn’t bother asking him who he was or on who’s orders brought him to my room. I knew who he was without explanation. If he worked for my captor than this man couldn’t be any better than him. I shouldn’t heave any expectations, but I couldn’t help but be a curious. He held a roll of parchment and a feather beneath his arm. His cheeks flushed beneath my unyielding gaze and he cleared his throat. When he realized I would not be speaking he bowed his head.
“My name is Odis Valor, I am the Beta of Crimson Moon pack. Your humble servant,” Odis said.
“Are you now?” I asked.
“Pardon?” Odis asked.
“Are you my humble servant?” I asked.
“Yes, Luna,” Odis answered.
“What brings you to my bedchambers, Odis?” I asked.
“I am here to escort you,” Odis said.
The Beta raised his head, his eyes didn’t wander, instead, he stared me directly in the eyes. I blinked as I stared back at him. I wore a thin long lace vintage night dress with long laced sleeves. He couldn’t expect me to leave my bed chambers and walk around the packhouse dressed like this. I was practically naked. His Alpha wouldn’t appreciate me walking the halls like this either.
A smile spread across my lips at the thought of angering him. I leaned my head to the side and took a step toward the Beta. I could feel a pull toward him and I knew what it was. There was a magical string that was tied to the Beta and his Luna. I wasn’t officially the Luna, but it was built into our laws, into our genes. Once I joined the pack and swore an oath as their Luna, Odis would be loyal to me. It was his job, it has been weaved into his blood as soon as he became Beta. He would protect, watch over, and serve me.
Odis may be the Beta of the Crimson pack, but he was supposed to kneel for me. As soon as I became Luna it would be hard for him to deny me. I’m surprised Alpha Ethan sent him to my room. It made me wonder if this was a way for him to keep an eye on me, or was this his way of trying to make me happy? It was common for a Luna to bed her Beta. It was frowned upon and caused problems, but because of the bond it was understandable and sometimes permitted. I wasn’t thinking of taking part in that little advantage, but it cast Odis in a more favorable light.
There was a special deep rooted bond between a Luna and her Beta. His eyes shimmered with something I couldn’t place, but I gave him a knowing look. He knew as much as I did that we would be spending a lot of time together. My eyes trailed down the side of his neck where he was unmarked.
His Adam’s apple bobbed again, his eyes dropped to my lips as a smile pulled at the corners. I wondered if he would be difficult to bring to my side. If I ran would he help me, or would he turn me in? I shook that thought from my head. He would be drawn to me and would want to be by my side.
There was a glimmer of hope for the future in this Goddess-forsaken place. In due time, I was confident that Odis could become my one and only friend. I needed one in this pack and within these walls. I dropped my arms and strode across the room to him. His eyes tracked my movements, suspicion and uncertainty flashed across his features. He lowered his chin, his eyes to the floor. I stopped in front of him and since he towered over me I could still see his face. I reached out and grasped his chin. A part of me recoiled at the touch, while the other warmed at the thought of companionship. His eyes darted to where I touched him, his mouth parted, an audible gulp reached my ears. I knew what he thought I wanted from the way he panicked.
“This is improper. L-Luna—” Odis started.
“You are mistaken Beta. There’s no need for formalities, you may call me Adea when it’s just the two of us,” I murmured.
“I wouldn’t dare—”
“Please, I insist. You’d be doing me a kindness. I have no friends here,” I said. I could see the battle as it waged in his eyes. For the first time since coming to Crimson Moon I laughed. This was fun, he was fun. I dropped my hand to my side.
