Take it
Shane
“Where have you been all this time?” The Warrior repeated. “Ever since m—… ever since the incident with the Alpha’s previous Beta, the two of you disappeared.”
“Am I obligated to answer your every question?” I spat.
“No, I suppose not. Is the Alpha expecting you?” He asked.
“Of course not,” I answered.
“I cannot permit you entrance. It is our duty to protect the pack members. I can’t let you loose—”
“Trent…” Mave said from behind me.
Trent’s blue eyes darted to my sister and I saw a softness there for her, reserved only for her. I didn’t have to look at her to know that the look was reflected in her own. I wasn’t expecting to meet anyone either of us knew. We had been young when we left and before then, we had never been permitted to leave the castle often.
Only ranked members were allowed near us and on rare occasion, their children. I had so much hate in my heart that being back and so close to where everything had happened had me on edge. Flashes of my father’s morning “lessons” that left the back of my calves red and bloody and my night visits by his beta tormented me.
Enough.
I cleared my throat and that softness in Trent’s eyes was gone in an instant. He turned from her and held his chin high as he looked me in the eyes. That black hole deep within me grew. The monster within me demanded I lashed out and struck him down.
“State your business, Shane,” Trent demanded.
I felt it before I saw it. The softness, the kindness, the warmth that had emitted from my sister was no more. It had quickly been replaced with anger. I knew what it was instantly. It doesn’t matter who you are, or what you are to her. Mave demands respect where it is owed. Like our father, she doesn’t like things out of place. We may have lived as bastards the last few years, but that was for survival. We are home now and I am heir to this pack. One of the man things I loved about my sister.
“Mind your manners, Trent. You are speaking to the future Alpha of this pack,” Mave hissed.
“The heir has been declared dead, for years. We haven’t heard from either of you, you’ve been gone for years! If I didn’t recognize you, do you think anyone would believe you are who you say you are? Do you not understand how much danger you are in by being here?” Trent asked. Whatever he felt for my sister, it was enough for him to still worry about her.
“I don’t care what anyone thinks. Why should the thoughts of those beneath me trouble me?” Mave asked.
Trent sighed and I couldn’t blame him. My sister was as stubborn as I. The more he tried to argue with her, the deeper she would dig her talons in. She wouldn’t go down without a fight. She wouldn’t give up, but we didn’t have time for this.
“Even so. I must speak to the Alpha and see what he has to say,” Trent said.
“Then do it, do your job,” Mave said.
“State your business,” Trent said as he turned back to me.
“Better,” Mave quipped. I laughed.
“I’m here to challenge the alpha. I’m here to take what’s mine. Make sure you tell him that when you speak to him,” I said.
“And why shouldn’t I cut you down where you stand?” Trent asked. He took a step forward and extended his claws. His behavior was laughable.
“I don’t care what you are to my sister. If you don’t step down, I will gut you and feed you your own entrails before you leave this world. I am here for what I am owed and no one will stand in my way for long. You won’t even attempt to cut me d own because I am doing nothing wrong. I’ve come to claim my birthright. My throne wasn’t passed down to me when I became of age, so I will take it today, by force. I will take what I am owed and none of you will do anything about it. Why? Because I am your Alpha,” I spat.
“Just do as he says, Trent. I don’t want to see you lose your life. If you think that I will stand in my brothers way for you, you are mistaken. The Goddess is on our side today. Anyone in our way will be removed. So please… don’t stand in our way,” Mave said.
“Goddess,” Trent cursed.
“Please Trent. Just link him,” Mave said. He dropped his hand and took a step back. He clenched his teeth together as she stared at Mave.
“One second,” Trent said.
In the next, he closed his eyes and when they opened, they were glaze over. He was linking the Alpha, my father. Mave and I exchanged a look before I looked back to the warriors. They weren’t standing as they had when they first spotted us coming towards them. Most of them avoided my gaze now, and some lowered their heads in respect. Had things gone the way they were supposed to, I would have already been their Alpha. But that’s not how life was. You didn’t get what you deserved, no one just handed over what was yours.
You had to take it.
Movement caught my eye and I turned back to find Trent staring at me. He took a step toward Mave and I arched a brow at him. Mave took a step back behind me and Trent stopped. He bowed and turned from the two of us. He nodded and the large doors behind him slowly moved as the warriors on the inside opened the gates.
“Follow me,” Trent said.
“Not without an explanation. Where are we going?” I asked.
“The Alpha will see you now. He said you are to be welcomed,” Trent said.
