Gabriel took my measurements and he asked me what my favorite colors were. He was insistent on making a few dresses in the color and styles that I wanted. He straightened and walked over to his parchment that held my measurements. I assured him that there were already plenty of dresses to choose from. I wouldn’t need anything more other than the dress he needed to make for the meeting. When he turned around his eyes were filled with worry.
“What is it?” I asked.
“Making changes to your dresses won’t be a big deal, but the amount that I will be taking off is alarming. How could you have lost so much in so little time?” Gabriel asked.
“I didn’t notice that much of a change. As you can see, I’m usually in my nightwear,” I murmured. Gabriel held my gaze and I was thankful he didn’t look over my clothes.
“Not today,” he said haughtily.
He ran over to the crate filled with dresses and began pulling out a few. Maroon, pink, black, he pulled about every color out of the crate. I watched him fuss over what dress would best would be easiest to size for me. I smiled when he looked up and agreed with everything he said. My heart warmed at the gesture. Odis opened the door and Gabriel shooed him out.
“Give us a few more minutes. Why wasn’t she attended to this morning? Whoever is assigned to ensuring she’s presentable for the day needs to be removed from this packhouse,” Gabriel said.
“Why do I need to leave?” Odis asked.
“Because I’m going to help her change and she needs privacy! Or would you like to stay here and watch?” Gabriel growled.
Odis held his hands up and backed up until he was outside again. I couldn’t help the giggle that fell from my lips. Gabriel had a temper on him. He burned hot, but it was a relief to feel the warmth of his flames in this ice cold castle.
“I’m glad you think that’s funny,” Gabriel chuckled. The anger wiped clean from his features and a kind smile in its place. “Do you have a preference?” He asked as he held up two long sleeved dresses that fell to the floor.
“No. Those are both lovely. I’ll let you choose,” I laughed.
“Green it is!” Gabriel declared.
Gabriel threw the brown one onto the pile of dress behind him. He was by my side in an instant and helped me with the corset. He was careful with his fingers and made sure not to touch me. He pulled the strings and he didn’t have to pull it tight before he started to tie it. Next I lifted my hands into the air while he pulled it over my head. I caught the shine of silver from his mouth as the material fell to the floor. I flattened my palm to my stomach and smoothed out the dress.
“This won’t take long. I just have to make a few corrections,” Gabriel said.
The square neckline was modest and the sleeves ran halfway down my wrists. Delicate black lace ribbon trims decorated the end of the sleeves. I indulged in the feeling of being covered up and safe, even though I knew it was nothing but an illusion. The minutes passes while he nipped and tucked. He didn’t break a sweat while he worked. I don’t know when it happened, but Odis had slipped into the room. He watched Gabriel flit around me like a hummingbird. When he was done the needle disappeared and I couldn’t recall seeing him put it away. Gabriel grabbed a pair of black leather slip in shoes. They were comfortable yet pretty. He dusted his hands and offered me his hand. Odis watched us as Gabriel twirled me around and around.
“Perfect. It looks amazing on you,” Gabriel said.
“You’ve outdone yourself,” I said.
“It was nothing. Every queen needs her weapon,” Gabriel said.
“Mm, thank you for preparing me for battle,” I teased.
“There will be no battle,” Odis said. The Beta took a step forward and Gabriel glared at him.
“I don’t remember any of us asking for your opinion,” Gabriel said saucily.
“It’s a figure of speech. There’s no battle right now,” I said.
“We need to go to her next appointment,” Odis said.
“So soon?” Gabriel asked.
“You’ve had more than enough time. She’s already late,” Odis said. I embraced Gabriel in a big hug before Odis could escort me from the room.
“Thank you,” I said.
“I’ll see you soon,” Gabriel promised. I didn’t trust myself to speak again, so I just nodded.
Odis rushed me out and I held my head a little higher now that I was clothed properly. My shoes clacked against the floor as I struggled to keep up with him. I didn’t even know what was next on the schedule.
“Where are we going next?” I asked.
“To the pack doctor,” Odis said.
Only the richest packs had doctors and Crimson Moon was definitely one. I hadn’t had a chance to meet him, but I’m sure he was an exceptional one. I, however, wasn’t ill or injured.
“Why do I have to see the pack doctor?” I asked. Odis didn’t stop, nor did he slow his pace. “Why, Beta?” I asked.
“You need to be looked over,” Odis said.
“You have failed to answer the question,” I said.
Finally he comes to a stop in front of two large oak doors and took a deep breath. It took him a moment, but he turned around to face me. Cold blue eyes stared down at me as I waited for an answer.
“I’m only do as I’ve been ordered. The pack doctor is on your schedule and my job is to escort you,” Odis said.
“You may pretend you’re only doing what you’ve been ordered to, but that is a choice. You can act like you don’t know anything outside of that, but you are the right hand man to one of the most powerful alpha’s in the country. You would know why I’m to see a doctor,” I said.
“It is not my place,” Odis sighed. I remained quiet, but held his gaze. “You may be with child,” Odis answered.
