Alpha-hole
Shane
That night my dreams were filled with desperation, sadness, and flashes of a life, lives together that ended painfully. I don’t know what it meant, I couldn’t piece what I remembered together. The more I tried to grasp onto it, the more it became more and more vague. I know know how long I slept, I woke up with sweat all over my body. I groan and forced my eyes open. I’d felt like I had lived a thousand lives from the time I had closed my eyes and opened them. I was unsure of where I was, who I was, and what I was supposed to be doing.
A cave.
The rushing water was the first thing I heard and saw. I was in the cave, I’d run away with my sister, and left her behind. I still lay on my stomach, my arms below me to hold up my head. I pulled myself to a sitting position and the walls of the cave swayed. I gasped out in pain as I felt everything all at once. It was the first time I’d felt the physical pain since that night.
It was crippling.
I took a deep breath to try and steady myself. I willed the pain to escape with every exhale of breath. When everything came back to a standstill, I looked around the cave. I did everything to block out the pain. It didn’t work, instead, I chose to ignore it, pretend it didn’t exist. I took in my surroundings.
The cave had changed since last night. It looked different, lighter, fuller. It wasn’t empty. There was a bed made of grass on the other side and a pile of wood that I think was meant to be for a fire. There was a few logs placed side by side, I think it was meant to serve as a table, with leaves and berries placed on top.
How long have I been asleep?
Had it really only been a night? I had a feeling I’d been asleep longer than one night. I had a suspicion I’d been asleep for a few days. Max did not answer me, but I felt him. His heart was bleeding. The sound of rushing water drowned out the sound of my sisters footsteps as she ran. The only sign of her arrival was when she came around the corner. She was wearing the same clothes, but they were clean. She was breathing hard as she came to a stop. Her eyes widening with shock as she took me in. A smile pulling at her lips and relief relaxing her shoulders as she realized I was awake.
“You’ve been out for a long time,” Mave mouthed.
“How long?” I asked.
“You needed it, don’t worry. I kept a look out,” she said. I fought and failed to hide my groan. “That’s a terrible way to say thank you for saving your life and keeping you alive,” Mave said.
“How long have I been asleep, Mave?” I asked.
“A week,” she answered.
“Damn it,” I cursed.
“No point in getting angry about it now brother. You needed it,” she said.
“What have you been doing?” I asked.
“Other than keeping us alive?” She teased.
“Mave…” I warned.I “I’m sorry. You know I make jokes when I’m nervous,” she said.
“Why are you nervous?” I asked.
“I was worried you’d died,” Mave mouthed.
“It would take a lot more than that to kill me, little sister,” I said.
“How have we not been found yet?” I asked.
“We’re behind a waterfall,” she said. Noticing my glare she continued. “They must have lost our scent.”
“Impossible. There’s no way and even if that were a possibility, they wouldn’t have given up. A week? Something is amiss,” I said.
“The first born found her mate and rode off into the sunset. Do you really think the alpha cares about you now? His daughter is gone and in the hands on her fated. You aren’t on his mind,” Mave said.
“It’s not her father that I’m worried about,” I said.
“Her mate?” Mave asked.
“He’s not her mate,” I growled.
“I’m just stating what everyone else knows. Don’t yap at me,” Mave said.
“I didn’t mean to,” I sighed. “He’s not her mate. Anyway, why haven’t we been found yet? Has anyone come?” I asked.
“Other than a handful of people who have come by to scoop water and one group of warriors, I haven’t seen anyone suspicious,” Mave answered.
“Warriors?” I asked.
“Yes, but I don’t think we have to pay them any mind. They didn’t stay long and I haven’t seen them since the one time they came by. I don’t think they were dispatched to look for us. They were dressed… differently. As for me, I’ve been checking out the surroundings,” Mave said.
“Why? You should stay by the water and in the cave. I’ve been out! What if you needed help? What if you were ambushed? I would have woken and you were gone without knowing where you were. That was foolish of you!” I exclaimed.
“Don’t go getting all alpha-hole on me! As you said, you were passed out, dead to the world. Did you really expect me to sit on my ass and do nothing? That doesn’t sound like me at all! I may be a female, but had I been born a man I would have been considered capable. If we’re going to stay here, we need to be familiar with the area, don’t we brother?” She asked.
“I don’t know if we’re staying here,” I sighed.
“I think this is as good as any and we haven’t been here long,” Mave said.
“I think we’ve been here long enough. I only intended to stay the night,” I said.
“Just one night? And where were we to go after this? You need time to rest, to heal. You can’t do anything if you aren’t at your best,” Mave said. I opened my mouth to speak, but she cut me off. “Don’t try ordering me around. You may be older, but I’m wiser,” she said.
