Ugly
Shane laughed. Yep, actually laughed. He sounded absolutely unhinged.
“I don’t know who you think you are, but a coward who won’t even show his real face has no business being here,” Shane growled.
What’s that supposed to mean?
Before I could ask, Chance lunged, and I cried out. His fist came crashing down on Shane’s jaw, but he didn’t stumble backward. And he didn’t dodge. Why didn’t he? He just returned his punch with a blow of his own. He swung his arm, his fist slammed into Chance’s chest. Hurt, he stumbled back, but recovered quickly. Chance dropped low and darted forward, his claws extended as he swiped. Shane took it yet again without trying to get out of the way. His arm lashed out and gripped Chance’s throat. His eyes widened.
No.
My chin quivered as flashback of Donny dying the same way had my heart dropping into my belly. I reached out and grabbed Shane’s outstretched arm as Chance struggled to get free. He was strong, but Shane had a vice grip and he wouldn’t release him. I knew he wouldn’t.
“Please,” I rasped.
His grip tightened as Chance failed to get beneath his fingers.
“Shane,” I begged.
“What is it, Adea? I’m about to get a two for one deal. I would have rid this world of 2 of the 3 men I know you’ve been bedding. What could you possibly have to say? Because I can assure you nothing that comes out of your mouth is going to make me let him live. You know how hard it’s been to find this fucker?”
I had so many questions for Chance, but what was important right now was making sure he lived another day.
“Let him go,” I pleaded. Big, fat tears rolled down my cheeks as I thought of him ending Chance.
“You already said you’ll never forgive me and I just told you I don’t need it. Make this good. Offer me something I don’t already have, Princess,” he said through clenched teeth.
My eyes darted to Chance. His veins protruded from his neck, his skin flushed red and would soon turn purple with the lack of oxygen. Shane’s claws extended and slowly dug into his flesh. I did the only thing that could distract Shane long enough to stop him from finishing him. I slid in front of him, turned my back on Chance, and rested my palms on his chest. Obsidian found brown eyes. Intrigue and suspicion stared back.
“Obedience. I’ll do—”
“What makes you think I want that?” he asked. He tilted his head in that cocky way I’d come to love in the short time I knew him.
“It would make your life a lot easier if you had a m-partner who listened to you. I’ll give you my obedience and… loyalty. I’ll do whatever you want me to do without question. And…” I trailed off.
“And?” he murmured.
“And I won’t fuck anyone else for the… foreseeable future.”
“Mm… you drive a hard bargain…” he trailed off. His gaze flickered to Chance behind me. “But seeing you try to be a good girl is all too tempting. I assume you won’t do either of those if I kill him now?”
He was serious.
Of course he was.
“No. The deal is off if you k-kill him.” I tried and failed to keep my voice calm. His eyes twinkled, and I held my breath as he mulled it over.
Please, please, please.
Shane’s arm fell and the sound of Chance gasping for air reached my ears. He was hurt, but relief washed over me. Inhaling sharply, I started to turn around when Shane gripped my chin.
“You look at him and I’ll kill him. Keep your back turned and walk away with me right now. That’s the only way I’ll agree to your deal. Prove to me you can be a good girl and I’ll spare him. Look at him and I’ll take that as I can pull his intestines out and feed em to him,” Shane sneered.
“O-okay. I won’t look at him.”
Pleased with my answer, he offered me his hand, and I took it without hesitation. He headed toward the car and I kept my eyes on his back. Chance’s footsteps reached my ears, and I shook my head.
“Don’t Chance. Please,” I whispered.
“But I—”
“It’s okay. I’m going to go with him. I already had plans with his sister. So please… just… do me a huge favor. Help Donny. Please… give him a burial. I c-can’t stand the thought of him staying out here overnight.” My voice cracked and more tears ran down my cheeks.
“Okay. I’ll take care of him. Don’t worry. I’ll come for you,” he promised.
Shane scoffed, but didn’t say anything as he opened the passenger’s door. Ducking, I crawled in and sat at the far end. Refusing to look at him as he hopped in and slammed the door. I folded my arms across my chest as Odis stepped on the gas and the car lurched forward. It wasn’t until we were on the main road did he speak again.
“Adea,” he cooed.
Swiping at my tears, I bit my lip and turned to glare at him. Obsidian watched as wetness dripped from my chin. He patted the seat beside him and I knew this was a test. We were still close enough to where he could order Odis to turn around and head back. I huffed as I scooted closer. He arched that perfect brow and I kept the words in that were on the tip of my tongue. Sliding next to him, I faced forward. His fingers tipped my chin up and slid next to him. His fingers gripped my chin and forced me to face him.
“Why do you waste these tears? Who are they for? The dead or the one who hides?” he asked casually.
Did he even care?
No, I already knew the answer to that question.
He didn’t.
I was nothing to him.
Owning me was the only thing that mattered.
“That was our first and only real date. I gave him that before I told him there was nothing between us. He knew nothing would come of us. You didn’t have to do that,” I sobbed. My shoulders shook and more tears rolled down my cheeks.
“You’re so ugly when you cry. I’ve missed seeing it,” he whispered.
Is he fucking kidding me?
