Hours went by of sifting through all the dresses. Since he was here, Ava decided it would be best to get a few dresses picked out and fitted for when I was to leave and join Ethan’s pack. The thought made me cringe but we spent a few more hours choosing styles. Ava had to run to relieve herself and I was left with Gabriel. He walked over to me and started to take my measurements.
“Excuse me,” he said. He looked around and when he confirmed that we were alone he whispered. “Are you in danger?” He asked
“Would you be able to help me if I was?” I whispered back.
He chuckled.
“I might be.”
“You could be a spy for all I know. A mole. Someone chosen by my father to check me out, feel me out before the celebration.”
“I’m not.”
“Am I to take the words of a stranger seriously? Am I to take you as a traitor lightly? Especially so on our first meeting?” I asked.
“You make a point. I was only seeing if you were in danger.”
“I will be but there’s nothing I can do about it. A woman doesn’t get to make her own life decisions. I am who I am and I will be what my father has destined for me.”
“At least you will have your mate.”
“I’ve only just become of age,” I laughed. “How could my father know who my mate is?”
“I see. Going against the Moon Goddess is forbidden,” he murmured.
“Is it, for someone who considers himself higher than the Moon Goddess?” I asked.
Gabriel gasps. “If I find a way to be helpful for you. I will let you know.”
“I will pray that you find a way.”
The door opened as if on cue and Gabriel finished up my measurements as Ava made her way toward us. Her gaze was suspicious as it looked back and forth between the two of us. When all was done, I followed Ava into the dining hall. It was already dinner time. Our footsteps echoed in the halls.
“Is it him?” She asked.
“What?” I asked.
“Is he the one you ran out with?” Ava asked.
I knew what she was referring to. That had been two years ago. It was something she should have forgotten by now.
“I don’t know what you mean.”
“Don’t jest with me, Adealine. Is he the one you were with? The boy you were protecting?” Ava asked.
“As I said earlier, I don’t know what you mean.”
Ava inhaled deeply and shook her head as she sighed. “You are insufferable.”
“I’ll take that as a compliment.”
“It wasn’t meant as one, sister,” Ava spat.
I followed her into the dining room. Father was already seated. I followed Ava and we took our seats on his left side. He dug into his food without a second glance our way.
“We got everything done today, father,” Ava said. Father grunted. “We have our dresses for the celebration. Now we just wait for the dressmaker to prepare and get them made. I also took the liberty of ordering her a few dresses for when she leaves.”
“Excellent.”
The servants brought out our food and my mouth watered at the smell of vegetable beef stew. It’s just what I needed. Next, a platter of thick bread was placed in front of us. The smell wafted through the room.
“Thank you.”
The servant dipped their head and scurried away. My sister had begun to eat and father was ripping into the meat. I looked across the table. The seat for mother was empty. She’d long since passed but I wondered what she would have done if she were still alive. I can’t remember my father being any different than what he was now. I don’t think I can remember a time when he was happy. I faintly remember my mother. Would she have been able to sway father and his decision? Or would my fate not have changed? I shook the thought from my mind as I picked up my bread. I dipped it into the bowl and bit into it. I bit back a moan. It was good.
After dinner, Ava took me along with her to sit in the room for guests. Father had a visitor and they were in his work room. The alpha of Blood Moon had brought his daughter and Ava was on close terms with her. I wanted to go up to the room but I already knew we had a guest and couldn’t disappear without entertaining her for at least a little while.
“Aren’t you excited?” Julia squealed. “You’re going to be Luna! You’re so lucky.”
“Isn’t she?” Ava sighed. “And her mate is lustfully handsome, wouldn’t you say so?”
“He is. You’re going to have beautiful babies,” Julia teased.
I felt sick. There it was again. The idea of being romantically involved with that asshole made me sick. I nodded but kept my mouth closed. I don’t even want to think about children. How would I care for children I didn’t want? How could I birth children that were his? Could I? Would I be able to love them? Even though they would be a part of me too? I didn’t want to think about it.
“Anyone would be lucky to have him,” Ava said smugly. They both smiled at each other as if there was a joke only the two of them knew of. I had a feeling I knew what it was about but didn’t care to know. I’ve long known about my sister’s fascination with Ethan. I just don’t care. I don’t want him. He’ll never be mine and I like it that way.
