Lovers
Lifetime ~ Livingston
Shane
Adea wanted to know what I had up my sleeve. Well, there it was. Telling from the sharp inhale and the way her breasts pushed against my chest. It worked. I took my time kissing her. I sucked on her flesh before lifting off of her. Staring at her, I watched as she stared at my hair. She always loved it. When our gaze met, she blinked before smiling. She shook her head and then tried to yank free. I held tightly before releasing her. She crossed her arms. Of course, she didn’t believe me. As if I were someone to tell a joke or lie. I didn’t lie. Not to her. Withholding the truth wasn’t lying. I’d get angry if I wasn’t so serious. I’d expected… I don’t know what I thought she’d say. I sighed.
That was a lie.
I wanted her to believe me.
No matter what.
I’d done so much more based on a promise made centuries ago.
“That’s the best you’ve got?” she huffed.
Pulling me back to the present, she had a suspicious look in her eye. Like a teacher who caught her student, she looked at me as if she’d caught me. Oh, to be a student punished by Ms. Adealine. Focus.
“What do you mean?”
“Saying this isn’t our first life together. That was your best attempt at distracting me?”
“I have no idea what you’re talking about.” I laughed because I didn’t.
“You said I had to be a virgin, but you didn’t. That’s bullshit and you know it.”
“That’s what you’re on about?” It was my turn to laugh. She shoved her hands against my chest and I smirked.
“Are you going to get off of me?”
“Now, why would I do that?” I smirked. Lowering myself to my elbow, I gripped her leg and wrapped it around my waist. She rolled her eyes, but couldn’t hide the way her cheeks reddened.
“Maybe because you mauled me while we were having a conversation? Or maybe because I have plans with your sister?” She sassed.
“And do you want to leave me?” I asked seductively. Tilting my head, I licked my lips and smiled as her eyes lowered. She swallowed and shook her head. “Good. Now that you’re no longer in denial, why don’t you tell me why you didn’t believe me?”
Her brows furrowed seconds before her eyes brightened when she realized what I was talking about.
“You’re talking about the reincarnation thing?”
I’d told her the truth, and she doubted me.
“There are vampires and werewolves. Our kind believe in a floating woman in the sky, but you can’t believe in rebirth?” I threw back at her. There was a look of wonder in her eyes. My heart stopped beating for a good minute. It had to. Because right now, she stared at me the same way she’d looked at me when I climbed her tower. Only to be replaced by doubt.
“You expect me to believe we knew each other in another life?”
“Yes.”
“I’ll play along. How did we meet?”
Curiosity. That’s all I heard in her tone. She was good at playing along. It caused a fissure in my chest. This was where I was supposed to throw caution to the wind and remember how each life ended, but Goddess-damn, this was the most progress I’ve ever made with her.
So many years had passed. I could tell her I didn’t remember, but that would be a lie. I recalled that day as if it were yesterday. Everything was so damn clear, I can still see the worry in her eyes as I stared up at her. My knees were in the dirt, but I’d been so enchanted by her, I didn’t sense the trouble just behind her. Without it, I wouldn’t have gained her attention. I can still feel the way her fingers wrapped around mine as she pulled me into the castle. Her father had beaten me, and I’d demanded she take responsibility. I growled, vanquishing the images that played out in my mind. Her eyes widened, but her thighs clenched.
“We met over potatoes.”
“Potatoes?” Disbelief colored her tone.
“Yes, potatoes. To this day, I can’t eat one.”
… without thinking of you.
A smile pulled at her lips.
“That bad?” she probed.
“Terrible,” I replied lightly.
“I didn’t leave a good first impression?”
“Oh, Princess…”
“What?”
“I couldn’t stay away,” I answered honestly.
“Mm… were we… friends?” She caught me off guard.
Could such a simple word be used to describe what she was to me? I shook my head. Her eyes saddened. She misunderstood. But friends… it was so small in comparison.
“You were everything.”
There it was. The truth.
She swallowed. Her eyes searched mine. Her mouth opened and closed. I could see it. She wanted to ask me something, but held back. I understood. After everything I’d done to her, my truth conflicted with my actions.
“Don’t go disappearing on me. Give me a chance,” she pleaded.
A chance?
I wanted to laugh.
Shouldn’t it be me begging her for a chance?
I bit my lip.
I wouldn’t beg.
“If I were to believe you, I’m not saying I do, but…. if this is our second life together, were we lovers in the first?”
Again, Adea caught me off guard.
“Who said this was the second?”
“But you said—”
“That this wasn’t our first life together. I don’t remember specifying that there were only two.”
This time, her forehead scrunches, and her eyebrows almost kiss. I could see the gears turning in her head.
“You’re saying there were more?”
“Many.” My gaze traveled over her face.
“You didn’t answer my question. Were we lovers?”
“In the first one, yes.” I kept my tone light. I wouldn’t go into detail.
“Were we not lovers in the others?”
“No,” I hummed as I leaned down, kissing her neck.
“Shane…” she warned.
My canines itched. What would she do if I marked her? Right here, right now? I chuckled. If I lingered, I just might bite her. Blocking the incoming images of when I sank my teeth into her and claimed her as mine in my dream, I inhaled her scent before trailing kisses down to her collarbone. Her towel had come undone and her nipples brushed against my chest. My mouth watered on cue. I wanted to suck on the little pebbles, but was enjoying this. We hadn’t chatted like this… in a long time. Pushing off, I sat next to her.
