Brother
My jaw dropped as my entire body froze. I couldn’t think, couldn’t form words, couldn’t breathe as my lashes fluttered. The memory of last night flashed through my mind, my body warmed as the ghost of his hands all over my body caused a delicious shiver to run down my spine. Mavy squealed and bound over to the drive-thru window, she leaned forward and gripped the lever before pulling it open.
My brain still hadn’t started working and I couldn’t hear any of the words that came out of her mouth. All I saw was there mouths moving but his eyes stayed on mine. Only when they darted to Mavy was I able to breathe, to move, to think. Goddess. Why is he here?
Mavy looked back over her shoulder at me and smiled before turning back to Shane. She chastised him and he smiled, actually smiled. It was the first time I’d ever seen his lips turn up in anything other than a smirk or snarl. My heart fluttered and my throat dried. I needed to get a hold of myself. This is the man that had hurt me last night.
Turning from them, I looked out of the window to make sure I didn’t have any clients. There was nothing but an empty parking lot on my side, so I started counting my till early. I needed something, anything to distract me from listening in on their conversation or staring at him longingly like a kid in a candy store. Reaching into my apron, I pulled it out and gasped when my eyes locked on 40 missed calls and multiple texts from Donny. What the fuck? Quickly, I dialed his number and it only rang once before I heard his voice.
“Luna? Is that you?” Donny asked.
“Yes! I missed… all of your calls. What’s up? Are you okay?” I asked, worry lacing my voice. The conversation behind me stopped but I focused on his voice.
“I’m fine! What about you? When you didn’t answer I got worried. I didn’t know where your day shift was and I’ve never been to your house, so I couldn’t check in on you,” he said frantically.
“Why would you check in on me?” I laughed.
“Well… after last night.. I…” he trailed off.
“Oh. You didn’t have to worry about that. I told you I was okay,” I said stiffly.
“Who was that? I hated leaving you,” he said.
“It doesn’t matter,” I lied. “You needed to! You were hurt. How are you? Did you go to the hospital?” I asked.
“Yeah, but don’t worry. I eat a lot of taro. My bones are strong,” he said.
“Really? Because they sounded like they were brittle last night,” I teased.
“That’s because he was inhumanely strong! It isn’t often that I go up against someone who can take me,” he said. I could just imagine him rubbing his nose and smiling at me.
“Oh, I believe you. You do well enough on the night shift. I know what you can do,” I laughed.
“Island boys do it best,” he boasted. I could just see him shaking his head, his beautiful long locks swaying in the wind. I fought the urge to giggle. He was so full of himself. “I was wondering if maybe this weekend we cou—”
“Oh gosh. Well, I’m doing my till so I need to let you go,” I interrupted. My eyes were wide with surprise. I was not expecting him to ask me out. We hadn’t talked about that night so long ago. Sure we flirted but it was all in good fun. I wasn’t sure how to react to this. I’ve never even been on a date outside of the club and I’m pretty sure that didn’t count.
“Oh okay,” he mumbled.
“I’m glad you’re okay,” I said honestly.
“Of course. That makes sense. Thanks for returning my call. I’ll chill with the texts,” he said nervously.
““It’s just hard to keep track of the numbers while I’m talking. I appreciate you caring,” I laughed.
“Always. Bye, Luna,” he murmured, his tone a little lighter.
“Bye, Donny,” I said in a teasing tone. I hung up and looked down at my till. Putting my phone back into my apron, I forgot where I’d left off and started over again. A car roared as it sped away and Mavy cautiously walked up behind me.
“Hey,” she said.
“Hey,” I said as I counted the nickels.
“Who was that?” She asked curiously.
“A friend,” I said absently as I wrote down the amount I had in my head.
“Oh, okay,” she whispered. I counted three little dimes and wrote down the total. I could feel her gaze drilling holes into the back of my head and I sighed. I don’t know what was going on with this chick, but I was not about to giggle and share the events of the night before about the guy who just came by to see her at work.
“Is there something you want to ask me?” I asked, my tone was a little harsh, but I just wanted to get out of here. I grabbed a handful of quarters and started dropping one at a time into the till as I counted. As soon as I got through the coins, the cash would fly by. It didn’t take long to do those. “I’m sorry. I worked a late shift and haven’t slept. So I’m a little grouchy,” I said. The excuse sounded lame but it was true.
“No,” she said carefully. “But I wanted to introduce you to my brother.”
My hand froze and I forgot where I was in counting the quarters. I closed my eyes tightly and took a slow steady breath. Brother? I groaned internally. How had I not seen the similarities? I’m so dumb.
“Maybe next time,” I choked.
“He sped out in a hurry. Maybe it’s a good thing you missed him this time,” she said thoughtfully.
“Oh, really?” I asked.
“Yeah, one second he’s smiling and the next he’s growling like an alphahole. I wonder what set him off,” she said.
There was no way she didn’t know. Mavy had to know that I had a thing with her brother, even if it was just a “tumble in the sheets.” Maybe he slept around a lot and that’s why she looked at me that way earlier. Maybe it wasn’t because I smelled like I had a partner, but because I smelled of her brother. My face heated. Goddess. I could die of embarrassment. Take me now.
