Congratulations
The doors opened and I walked through the dining hall. The smell of breakfast wafted through the air and the only person to greet me was Beta Odis. He stood to his feet and bowed while I made my way toward the table. A servant rushed forward and pulled out my chair for me. I sat down and someone placed a plate in front of me. Alpha always had guests, so when the doors opened I paid them no mind. Too busy was I with pushing the food around my plate.
Two sets of footsteps made their way towards the table, but no one spoke, and no one greeted them. Lifting my head, I turned to my left and looked at the guests. One had silver hair and a shade of lavender eyes I’ve never seen before. The other guest, I knew. I knew her right away. I dropped my fork to the table and my stomach dropped. It couldn’t be, it didn’t make sense, there was no way that she was here right now.
I looked around the table, my gaze stopping on Alpha. He sat in his seat, eating his foot as if he didn’t sense anything different. Why was she here? Alpha lifted his head, his cool green eyes met mine, and his lip twitched with the urge to smile. I turned back to Mave, but she didn’t look at me. She ignored my gaze and walked in. She continued in until Odis stood to his feet and pointed her toward the seat by Alpha’s side. None of this made any sense.
Someone placed a plate in front of Mave. She grabbed a fork and began to eat without a single glance my way. What had he done to her? My eyes scoured her body, but found no signs of bruises visible. The silvered woman took a seat by her side and she stared at me from across the table.
“-lations are in order,” Beta said. I turned to stare at him before looking back and forth between the two of them.
“What?” I asked.
“Congratulations…” Beta said, repeating himself.
“For what?” I asked. I caught the last bit of what he was saying. I had been too distracted by the arrival of our guests.
“Did you not hear me?” Alpha asked. I cleared my throat.
“No,” I choked. This was the first time I had spoken to him in a long while.
“I’ve decided to mark you this weekend. I see no reason to wait any longer. It’s time to put you in your rightful place, don’t you think?” Alpha asked. My throat dried. “The Luna Ceremony followed by me marking you. I was thinking of making it public.”
My mouth watered and I heaved. The thought of doing that scared me, the thought of making it public so many could see had me feeling faint. I shivered as the mental image of hundreds of eyes watching filled my mind.
“We have one more thing to do, don’t we?” Alpha asked. I looked at him and followed his gaze. He was watching the silver haired woman. She turned to look at him and nodded.
“Yes, we do,” she answered.
“And you’re ready?” Alpha asked.
“Yes.”
“Excellent,” Alpha said. He sat back in his seat, rested his elbows on the arm rests and placed his hands in front of him, his fingers on both hands pressed against each other. I watched as an excited grin stretches across his face. He leans his head back against the back of his chair and turns his attention to me. “Perfect,” he purred.
“And you’ll keep your end of the deal?” The silver-haired woman asked. Alpha’s gaze cut to her.
“Yes,” he said. His grin dropping.
“How can I be sure?” She asked, her chin held high, no fear whatsoever written across her face.
“We’ll sign the contract the same day,” Alpha said.
“I would like it if we could sign it today,” she said.
“Olivia,” Alpha warned. So that was her name.
“I need assurance that you will keep your end of the deal for eternity,” Olivia said.
Alpha slammed his fist down on the table and I flinched. Mave gasped and Ava clutched her pearls. Beta Odis turned to face Alpha, he put his hand on the table and Alpha turned to look at him.
“I think it best if this be discussed in your office, Alpha,” Beta Odis said. His chin dipped respectfully. Alpha clenched his teeth and cracked his neck before he spoke again. His lip peeled back behind his teeth and he leaned forward.
“We had an agreement. I will keep it, so long as you do what was promised. I’ll sign your contract after our meal,” Alpha growled.
“Thank you,” Olivia said. She turned from him and continued to eat.
No matter how much I wanted to speak to Mave, I knew I couldn’t, not here at the table. I made up my mind to try and see her later that night. I don’t know where she was staying, or what she was doing, but I would find her. It all made sense now. The scent on Alpha, the one I had recognized, I should have known that it was her. How long has she been here? The only time I could think of… I gasped. I stared at her from where I sat.
The only time that he could have grabbed her would have been during the meeting at the Alpha’s Table. If that’s true than Mave has been here for a month. I spend the rest of the meal staring at my plate. When I’m dismissed, I stand to my feet and when the doors open, the handmaidens are waiting outside for me. They escort me back to my room and I spend the rest of the day there.
When night falls, Alpha doesn’t come. I don’t know why and I don’t care. I wait for the guards to leave for their five minute break at midnight. When they do, I slip out of my room. I need to speak to Mave.
