As I forced one foot in front of the other the cold night air kissed at my own wounds. It tickled and a shiver went down my spine. I couldn’t feel anything and that probably wasn’t good, but I couldn’t find it in me to care. The material of my shirt clung to the skin on my back. The more steps I took the colder my heart grew. I knew this was the best I could do right now, but it didn’t make it any easier.
Fog billowed out of my mouth with each haggard breath. I walked between the slave quarters hidden in the shadows of the night. My fingers dragged along the side of the house before I rounded the corner. I strode across the deck in two strides and threw open the door. Mavy screamed and her body automatically went into defense mode. I closed the door behind me and she was up on her feet. She darted across the room to me and threw her arms around me. I grimaced as her hands dug into the back of my neck.
“What is this?” Mavy said.
Her hands dropped and her eyes widened in horror as she stared at the blood on her hands. She looked up at me and reached for my cheeks. She held them in both of her hands as she looked me in the eyes.
“What happened?” Mavy asked.
“There’s no time. We need to leave,” I grunted.
“Leave? Why? Where are we going?” Mavy asked.
“We don’t have time. We can talk on the way. We need to get as far away from here as possible,” I said.
I grabbed her hands and pulled them down. I walked away from her and threw a few things into a potato sack. Mavy cursed and ran into her room. We were ready in less than 5 minutes. We looked at each other for a moment and nodded. I headed for the door and slowly opened it just enough to be able to look outside. When I was sure there was no one outside, I turned to her, and grabbed her hand.
“I, Shane, reject Alpha Eduard Biscoff of the Clear Mountain pack,” I said.
“I, Maveline, reject Alpha Eduard Biscoff and Clear Mountain pack,” Mavy repeated.
She gasped as the string connecting us to Alpha Eduard was severed. The blood in my veins went cold, or felt like it now that we were alone. Now that we were rogues. But it didn’t matter. We were together at least.

Enough. We need to leave. I know, Maximus.
If we are to come back for our mate, we need to leave. The sooner we leave the sooner we’ll be able to get her.
Can we shift?
It might hinder you.
I don’t care, Max! We need to get out of here and we need to get Mavy away.
She can shift. Make her shift when we’re far enough away. Then I’ll take over.
This is temporary, Max. Don’t get comfortable.
Don’t be weak then, Shane. If you want control back you’ll have to take it.

I double checked the surroundings one more time before I opened the door. I grabbed my sisters hand and rushed into the night. The crickets chirped and the night air surrounded us as we ran into the shadows. The Alpha of Clear Mountain pack would have felt us leaving the pack as much as we felt the separation. It wouldn’t be long until the warriors were dispatched to look for us. Time was of the essence but all I could think about was the woman I was leaving behind.

Not for long.

As we crossed over the border, we were officially off of pack grounds. I knew I wouldn’t be able to see her but my heart yearned for her. I looked back in the direction of the packhouse. I’ve spent the last few years staring up at her room. My mind easily conjured up the candle in her window, the stone wall that looked to go on for miles, and her small frame in the corner as she looked at the moon. I grit my jaw and turn from the illusion.
“When are you going to tell me what happened?” Mavy asked. “Why are you injured? Did they find out? Where are we going? Damn it, brother! I need answers.” She squeezed my hand. When I didn’t say anything she pulled her hand free of my grasp. I didn’t stop walking.
“They found out. We’re going home. I’m going to take back what’s rightfully mine,” I replied.
“How can you go home in that condition?” Mavy asked.
“I’ll need a few days to heal. We’ll go somewhere safe while I do,” I said.
“Is that what you want?” She asked.
“What?”
“To be Alpha,” Mavy said.
“I was born to be,” I said. I stopped walking and turned to face her. “You need to shift.”
“What?” Mavy asked.
“You need to shift,” I murmured.
“But.. but I-I can’t,” Mavy whispered.
“You can. You must,” I said.
“I swore I would never shift,” she pleaded.
“Alpha Eduard will dispatch warriors soon, if he hasn’t already. We don’t have time to be walking around like this. They’ll catch up to us soon if we don’t. We need to shift and run. It’s our only hope,” I said.
“I don’t want to let her out.”
“I know, sweet sister. I’m sorry I’m making you do this. You can blame me. We need to go. I can’t carry you on my back.”
Mavy took a deep breath and I thanked my lucky stars. I turned my gaze upon the moon as she called upon her wolf. The sounds of her bones cracking and her cries of pain filled the night. When her breathing evened out I called on Maximus and he gladly took over. It was easier for me because I’d done it before many times.
My nose pushed out and stretched into a snout, I grew taller as my hind legs came in, and I bent over until my hands were on the ground. My hands were replaced by paws and hair pushed out from all over my body. I whined as my back stretched despite the open wounds.
When the transformation was complete I looked through Maximus’ eyes as he turned to my sister’s wolf, Lani. She pranced around me, her yellow eyes stared back at me, her tongue lolled out. Maximus growled at her and ever so slightly she crouched down in submission. He turned from her and ran. The sound of her paws as they pushed off the ground were confirmation that she followed.
