Disrespect
My skin heated, and it felt as if my blood were boiling. I don’t know which part I was more angry about. This woman being here in my space, the supposed plan to remove her from the premises, or the way Shane called her name. Was it a nickname? Maybe it was all the above that truly pissed me off. My gaze locked with Gabe’s and I gave him the ‘Am I the only one insane here?’ look, but he just shook his head reassuringly. So either I wasn’t, or the two of us were both equally crazy. Turning my focus back to Beka, I waited impatiently for what she’d say. My lip curled as she softened her eyes and pouted.
“When you didn’t come back, I was worried. On top of that, you didn’t answer any of my texts.” She hunched her shoulders, making herself appear smaller. We’re taught this at a young age to show an aggressive male we were weak and meant no harm. My skin crawled as she leaned into him, invading his space. I bit back the whine in my throat as my insecure thoughts swirled through my mind.
Is she the reason he won’t mark me?
We had a really rough start, but I have been Shane’s since the moment he walked into my VIP room. It hurts to know it wasn’t reciprocated.
“That doesn’t answer my question,” Shane growled.
My gaze darted to my mate, and that’s when I noticed the change in his demeanor. The man I’d spent the night with was gone. In his place was an alpha-hole, someone who was no stranger to taking what he wanted, when he wanted. This was the man who was used to women falling at his feet, begging for just a taste of his cock, and it was a dagger through the chest remembering that I too was acquainted with this version of him until he brought me home.
“I-I…” Beka looked at me with something other than disgust: doubt. A tatted hand flew forward and wrapped around her throat.
“You know what? It doesn’t matter. You know you’re not allowed here,” Shane growled. Leaning down, his mouth hovered by her ear. Too fucking close. “You’ve disobeyed me.”
“Never, Alpha,” she rasped. My breath came out ragged and my vision blurred. I’ve been where she is. His hand on my throat, and willing to do whatever he wanted. His grip is nothing if not painful, but she makes no move to scratch at him, doesn’t even attempt to pry him off. I want to rip him off of her, to yell at him to look at me, but I do neither. I’m frozen in place, unable to look away. There’s a gagging sound and I’m not sure if it’s from her or my best friend.
“I should kill you.” I could tell from his tone that he was contemplating it. He could do it. I know he could. But what stung was the fact he hesitated. He hadn’t with Donny and it made me wonder if she meant something to him. I bit into my lip so hard, it bled.
“We’re not doing this. We’re leaving.” It took me a second, but I tore my gaze away from my mate and focused on my best friend. I noted the way his chest rose and fell, anger clear in his eyes, but he wasn’t glaring at Shane anymore. He was looking at me.
“You’re not going anywhere,” Shane warned, but I didn’t look at him. My best friend’s arm was outstretched, his hand open in offering. Liquid slowly dripped down my chin as I stared at it. Glancing back up to those kind blue eyes, he mouthed the word ‘now’. Reaching out, I took it and he tore me from Leo’s grasp. Stepping out of Odis’ arms, he pulled me into his side, lifted his nose into the air and addressed Shane.
“This may be your pack, but we aren’t members. And you seem pretty fucking preoccupied with your little whore. You don’t get to tell her what to do,” Gabe growled threateningly. More so than I’ve ever heard before. Shane glanced back to Beka and where his hand touched, then his brows jumped as if he finally got what he’d done wrong, but it didn’t matter anymore because Gabe walked me toward the door. Warmth wrapped around my arm and I was forced back, but Gabe wasn’t letting go. There was a yelp follow by a loud bang.
“You’re not taking her.”
Gabe glared at my mate. Their eyes locked and I could almost feel the mental tug of war going on, but I can’t look at Shane. I can’t bring myself to. I’m afraid of what I’ll see there. The thought of him looking at me the same way he did her, the same way he had been until he brought me here, scared me.
“You disrespect my sister with this filth. You’ve clearly been marked and you haven’t even gotten rid of your side pieces yet?” Gabe hissed. Beka made a pained sound, but everyone ignored her. Thankfully, Shane didn’t try to yank me away. They both had a strong grip on me.
“I forgot about her,” Shane said through clenched teeth.
“About Adea?” Gabe snorted.
“No! Her,” Shane snarled, yanking his head in Beka’s direction. Either she fell or Shane pushed her because she was on her knees, her sharp heels pointing in different directions as she rubbed the side of her head. She chewed on her lip nervously. “Adea has all of me. Always has. Always will.”
Shane’s words pull me back and I can’t avoid his gaze any longer. When I look at him, his forehead is scrunched, his brows almost kissing, the look in his eyes are desperate. He’s not looking at Beka, he’s looking at me. I let out a breath and my shoulders sag. My insecurity got the best of me and for a moment, I let myself dive down into the pit of darkness. I choke on a sob, but refuse to cry in front of her and everyone else here.
“Get rid of her, Shane. Get rid of her now,” I demanded.
“Of course, Princess. I was going to. It wasn’t what it looked li—yes.” Shane turned from me and glanced at Odis. The beta dipped his head, walked over to Beka, and pulled her to her feet. “Don’t look at her.” Shane focused on me. Obsidian eyes bore into my soul.
“I’ve only want you.” His words were firm, and filled with conviction. The complete opposite of my mental state. I felt like I would crumble if she stayed for a second longer. Odis dragged her out and Leo stepped forward when the door shut. In the corner of my eye, Leo lightly touched Gabe’s arm.
“Are you okay, Ady?” Gabe asked gently.
“Yes,” I whispered.
“I’m not leaving. I’ll be here. Just call me if you need me.” His warning to Shane was clear: he wasn’t going anywhere.
“Okay, bestie.” Breaking eye contact, I turned to him and he pulled me in for a hug. Ignoring, Shane’s low growl. When we broke apart, he glared at Shane one last time before he walked out. I watched him and Leo until they closed the door behind them.
