Reject

My heart flip flopped in my chest and I swooned as Maximus held me close. Now that I was alone with a part of Shane that told the truth, I had an idea. This was my chance to seek out answers and ask questions I probably would never ask Shane, especially after the way he treated me. I didn’t want to put up with that man but a part of me was curious about why he was so hateful, so cruel, so harsh to me.
A million questions ran through my head and as I tried to figure out which one I wanted to ask first, the large man nuzzled my neck. He made a happy rumbling sound and it was all too easy to let him in. He made a happy rumbling sound and I wrapped my arms around his broad shoulders. My throat tightened, what was not to like about a wolf that was practically purring? I’ve only been in his presence for two minutes and I already preferred him to his human counterpart.
“Why did you hurt Donny?” I asked carefully. He stopped with his nose against my neck and I wondered if I’d started with the wrong topic. If he were in his wolf form I’m sure his ears would be on high alert and I couldn’t stop the small smile from pulling at the corners of my lips at the mental image.
“I was going to take care of you, clean you up, but he tried to wipe our scent from you and…” Maximus trailed off.
“And you thought that was a good enough reason to break his arm?” I asked.
“And he touched you. I didn’t want your scent to change anymore than it already had. You smell but I’ll change that,” he growled. His hands wandered lower and I pretended not to notice.
“Oh, thanks,” I said sarcastically. “What do I smell like?” I asked, genuinely curious. He wrinkled his nose as he ran his tongue up my neck.
“Like wolf and human. The scent of the ones before are close to blending with your sweet scent,” Maximus sneered. He carried me effortlessly over to the couch and sat down with me in his lap. He pulled me so close my chest smashed against his. “But don’t worry. You also smell of me. My seed glistens on your body and I can smell it leaking from your cunt, making it obvious who you belong to,” Maximus said proudly. Another mental image of a wolf wagging his tail flashed across my mind. I was almost too tired to feel embarrassed by his words, almost.
“Why was Shane the one that greeted me when I came through the door and not you? Did he want to see me too?” I asked, trying and failing to hide the hope from my voice. Maximus grew quiet and I knew the answer before he spoke. His silence filled the room, it was almost louder than the music pulsing on the other side of the door.
“He didn’t want to find you but I did. I wanted you. I took over and came for you,” Maximus said carefully. I choked up, unsure of what to say that. “But deep… deep… deep down, I know he wants you just as much as I do.”
“I’m glad you wanted me,” I said honestly.
“Shane wants you too,” he whined.
“Physically maybe,” I said sadly.
“It’s more than just that. He’s just a stubborn mule,” he urged. Mule?
“Mm… even if that were true, I don’t know if I can be with someone who hates me as much as he does,” I started.
“He doesn’t hate you,” Maximus said. I gave him an unsure look.
“You don’t hate me, but Shane was definitely angry. He treated me as if I’d wronged him. He was rude and just took what he wanted,” I said.
“You are ours. We want and need you with every fiber of our being. I… I moved without thinking. I don’t like seeing you dressed like this. I don’t want others to touch what’s mine,” he growled.
“Your way of thinking is outdated,” I said defensively. He growled again and I tensed.
“Do you fear us? Are you afraid of me?” he asked curiously. I shook my head. “I would never hurt you,” he swore.
“I… I can’t help if my way of living disgusts him,” I choked. “And I won’t apologize for it,” I said more firmly. My hands slid down is shoulders as my arms fell away from his shoulders. I started to pull away and his arms pulled me back into his embrace.
“Look at me,” he murmured. I lifted my chin and looked up into glowing yellow eyes. “There she is,” he cooed. I hated the way my lip twitched with the urge to smile. “You don’t disgust me. I’m protective of what’s mine and I don’t like the man hanging around you. I came here tonight to see you, to claim and mark you.”
“As sweet as your words are and as tempting as the thought of you claiming me sounds, I don’t want to be tied for all eternity to your other half,” I said.
“I’m sure I can convince you to see things my way. You’ll find that I can be very convincing,” Maximus hummed. I laughed at his confidence.
“Unless we can banish Shane, I don’t see me okay with spending my life with him,” I joked. Even though I was trying to lighten the mood, the words still hurt. I definitely liked him, more than I would like to admit but I’m not okay with being treated like a whore. I liked every bit of the rough sex and the degrading words, but it was the treatment after the act that struck deep. There was no aftercare, no hugs, no soft touches. Maximus wanted to take care of me, but Shane hadn’t even tried.
“Will you reject me?” Maximus asked quietly.
