“That’s real exciting, Gabby, but we both know that rumors can’t be trusted. When we first moved here, people thought I was your wife,” I said. Yes, they were humans, but still. “The politics of packs doesn’t concern me. He isn’t our alpha and if this alpha is as dangerous as they say, we should not be indulging in rumors,” I said. He rolled his eyes and waved me off.
“It’s been two months. Don’t you think he’s found her?” He asked.
“I fail to see why this all matters,” I laughed.
“Why else would he settle down here? I think he’s found her, but isn’t approaching her. Tell me, Ady, why would an Alpha do that? Hmm? Especially one who takes what he wants, when he wants and just… not take it? Why wouldn’t he make a move? Hmm?” Gabe asked.
“This need for answers is going to get you in trouble Gabe,”I said. He gave me a look and I huffed. “Is this the part where I ask why?” I asked.
“I’m glad you asked. I think he’s found her, I think he knows who and where she is. I think he’s watching her. Now… I don’t know why, but I think it’s big, I think it’s really big,” Gabe said seriously. I shook my head.
“Are we still talking about this Alpha, or something else?” I asked. It wasn’t often that I joked around about alpha dick with Gabe. I was hoping this would distract him. I was more than ready to move on from the hot werewolf news.
“Nice try, but rumor has it that he killed his parents and took his birthright by force,” Gabe said.
“That’s…”
Morbid?
Terrible?
Or is it the opposite?
Is it brave?
Admirable?
“Sounds like a man that doesn’t take shit. I liked him,” I said. Gabe’s mouth opened and shut. Then he lifted his finger in the air as he gave me a look of disapproval. But I knew better, he still had that gleam in his eye.
“It sounds like he’s psychotic. That’s what he sounds like. The one guy you actually show the slightest bit of interest in would be the psychotic alpha,” Gabe groaned.
“Is it because he’s hot?” I asked.
“What?” Gabe asked. He blinked as if he didn’t think he heard me right.
“Are you so interested in this because he’s hot?” I asked.
“Bish, please. I’m invested,” Gabe said. His face was so serious, I couldn’t help but laugh.
“Well? Is it?” I asked.
“No! I haven’t even seen him yet,” Gabe said.
“Mm, so will you become obsessed when you see him?” I asked.
Gabe’s tongue slid out and rubbed against the right side of his mouth. He lifted his hand to his chin and pretended to seriously consider it. I leaned forward and pushed him in the chest. I wasn’t strong, but Gabe pretended to move back and grasp his chest.
“No, pretty boy has my full attention right now,” Gabe answered.
“Your full attention?” I asked. My eyes widened at this bit of information. “Have you guys defined the relationship? Why the hell have we been talking about alphas this whole time?! We should have been talking about Leo!”
“Woah, slow down there. No, we have not defined anything and we aren’t going to anytime soon. He just has my full attention right now at this moment,” Gabe said.
“Mm,” I hummed.
“Back to what I was saying,” Gabe said. I groaned. “His sister was supposedly so heartbroken with the death of their parents, that they couldn’t stay there. That’s when the take overs started. They’ve been doing this for a year now, without staying more than a week or two. They’ve been here for two months and all of a sudden she just shows up to work at a cafe?” Gabe asked.
“I don’t know what you want me to say,” I said.
“I want you to admit something is going on here so we can crack the case together. What else would make them stop?” Gabe asked.
“I am no detective and how do you even know it’s her?” I asked.
“Because I saw her being escorted around town a few weeks ago and again at Run,” Gabe said.
Run was one of the biggest of three clubs in Auburn. I worked graveyards at Ocean Side, it was a private VIP club, and only had to deal with humans there. I’ve never been to Run because it was always packed and I liked to resign to my lair on my days off. Wolves and the like were known to frequent Run and I preferred to be around humans. They posed less of a threat and the chances my mate was a human were low. Not impossible, but low.
“Are you sure that Mave was who you saw?” I asked.
“One hundred percent, baby. New girl is the Alpha’s sister,” Gabe answered.
“Well, I’m glad you got that off your chest, but how about we stop talking about her now?” I asked. Gabe pouted. “For all we know, the rumors are false and they’ve been on the traveling for the last year or however long. They’ve settled here and maybe… maybe she wants to get to know the people by working here.”
“You can’t seriously believe that?” Gabe asked.
“I do. What’s so hard to believe?” I shrugged.
“Uh, first off, maybe the fact that a super rich, Alpha’s sister, would be working a job outside of the packhouse? That is not plausible. It doesn’t make any sense. She doesn’t have to work another day in her life and if she did, it would be for the packhouse. The lowest position being a Delta. Second off, have we not spent every Friday night binge watching chick flicks? If she isn’t the female lead, she’s the villainess. Snobby villainesses in BMW’s don’t work without a reason and they don’t try to get to know ‘the people’. We both know this,” Gabe said.
“This isn’t a movie, Gabby. This is real life,” I sighed.
Gabe threw out his bottom lip and pouted. “Let’s leave the nice girl alone. That’s what we wanted when we first got here. Let’s show her the same compassion we wanted from the townies.”
“I’ll think about it,” Gabe said sadly.
“I hate to leave you alone on swing shift, but I need to sleep before my shift at ,” I said.
“I know… I’ll be fine. Get some sleep,” Gabe smiled.
“I’ll pick you up before work?” I asked. Gabe shook his head.
“No, it’s okay. I’ll run home,” Gabe said.
“I can’t have you do that Gabe. We can’t shift whenever we want here. It’s no big deal. I’ll pick you up,” I said.
“Relax, Mom, I meant actually run and you need to get some actual sleep before you go in,” Gabe laughed.
“Ugh. I love you!” I said.
“Love youuu. I’ll see you in the morning,” Gabe sang as a car pulled up to the drive thru window.
